In a 2011 interview, King noted that he knew from an early age that he was "going to go into show business." Toward that goal, after graduating from a Scranton public high school, he applied to New York City's Juilliard School, one of the premier performing arts conservatories in the country. Unfortunately, his family could not afford Juilliard's high tuition, and King instead attended the more affordable Mercyhurst University, a Catholic liberal arts college in Erie, Pennsylvania. Mercyhurst had a small theater program at the time, which King later learned to appreciate, explaining that he received invaluable personal attention from the faculty and was allowed to explore and grow his talent at his own pace. However, he left college after three years without graduating, driven, he said, by a desire to move to New York and "make it as an actor." In New York, King worked multiple jobs, such as waiting on tables and unloading buses at night, while studying acting during the day at the famed Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.

Featuring the stars of American series Will & Grace Queer Eye for the Straight Guy cover celebrated what seemed a milestone in mainstream media: at least nine gay-centric television shows in prime time, in a period of unprecedentedSusie Khamis and Anthony Lambert visibility for gay and lesbian characters and personalities. This was, to a certain extent, an unexpected side effect of the cultural focus on gay men after the spread of AIDS in the West in the 1980s: While the AIDS crisis claimed many lives, it served as a catalyst to open conversations about sexuality and gender that had heretofore been difficult if not impossible and, consequently, the turn of the millennium ushered in a newfound examination of what had been defined as ‘‘gay,’’ and perhaps not so positively, this queered space began to make ‘‘gay’’ a commodity. Interestingly, it would only be 10 years after the height of the AIDS crisis in America that magazine dedicated its front cover to ‘TV’s Gay © 2015 the number one television sit-com would highlight the lives of two ‘‘gay’’ men (2003–2007) and From Alison Hulme (ed.), Consumerismand two ‘‘straight’’on TV: Popularwomen (all whiteMedia and from‘‘upper-middle-class’’) the 1950s to in thea manner Present , published by Ashgate Publishing.that captured See: many http://www.ashgate.com/isbn/9781472447562 of the stereotypes historically associated with gays and the women who adore them (Poole, 2014: 280).

  • The Rhetorical Function of Laugh Tracks: Examining Queer Shame in Will & Grace and Roseanne
The Rhetorical Function of Laugh Tracks in Situation Comedies: Examining Queer Shame in Will & Grace and Roseanne Jimmie Manning Associate Professor and Communication Undergraduate Program Director Department of Communication Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program Northern Illinois University As recent world events remind us, comedy continues to act as a subversive political force. The hacking of executive email accounts in response to The Interview1 and terrorist attacks on French magazine Charlie Hebdo over political cartoons2 are but two recent large-scale examples. Popular comedic texts have the power to instigate, inform, transform, and critique values, beliefs, and institutions.3 Indeed, comedy serves as a unique and constitutive form of allowing people to see and experience their social worlds. Although large-scale cultural events make this especially evident, it is easier to forget how everyday popular entertainment has a similar, perhaps more subtle, power to provoke. Sometimes comedy can be used as a mechanism for control—such as jokes that devalue people because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or national origin—but also as a mechanism for support, entertainment, education, self-defense, or empowerment.4 Additionally, comedy has implications for both identities and relationships, even if they might not always be realized.5 In this essay, I examine this highly-personal, world shaping, and perhaps sometimes invisible potential for comedy to construct identities and relationships. Specifically, I examine laugh track use in two highly popular television programs, Will & Grace and Roseanne, to consider how the construction of what is or is not supposed to be funny has rhetorical implications for queer identities and relationships.

Critical Studies in Media Communication Vol. 19, No. 1, March 2002, pp. 87–105 Gay Characters in Conventional Spaces: Will and Grace and the Situation Comedy Genre Kathleen Battles and Wendy Hilton-Morrow ᮀ—This paper explores how Will & Grace, which has been heralded in the popular press for its positive representations of gay men, situates the potentially controversial issue of homosexuality within safe and familiar popular culture conventions, particularly those of the situation comedy genre. This paper draws on feminist and queer theory to examine the liabilities of relying on these familiar situation comedy conventions, demonstrating how the program equates gayness with a lack of masculinity, relies on sexual tension and delayed consummation, infantilizes the program’s most potentially subversive characters, and emphasisizes characters’ interpersonal relationships rather than the characters’ connection to the larger social world. Additionally it argues that by inviting mainstream audiences to read the program within familiar televisual frames, Will & Grace can be read as reinforcing heterosexism and, thus, can be seen as heteronormative. hen Will & Grace took to the tion, 2000). Jacques Rothmann ‘Send in the (gay) clowns’: Will & Grace and Modern Family as ‘sensibly queer’1 First submission: 29 November 2012 Acceptance: 20 August 2013 Initial representation of sexual minorities reified gay lifestyle as synonymous with deviancy (Seidman 1996: 6), courtesy of news programmes or documentaries. Several depictions, whether comical or dramatic, led to an outcry from conservative and gay groups alike, protesting the stereotypical depiction of gay men as “a joke” (Burgess 2011: 178), a theme which would continue until the present day. This article provides a queer theoretical critique of two situation comedies, Will & Grace (Kohan & Mutchnick 1998) and Modern Family (Levitan & Lloyd 2009a), and their representation of gay men. Primary emphasis is placed on the dualistic use of comedic satire to either reinforce heteronormativity or exemplify the permeable nature of the supposed rigidity of the heterosexual/homosexual binary logic (Fuss 1991; Namaste 1996).
