REMARKS BY DEAN EARL F. ENGLISH

2 :30 P. M. 1 FRIDAY, MAY 6, 1955 )AY H. NEFF AUDITORIUM

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: We are gathered here this afternoon for the 26th annual presentation of honor awards for distinguished service in journalism. Missouri honor awards have come to be known as the highest of recognition in the world of journalism. They are based on records of outstanding achievement over many years1 rather than on particular instances of indi vidual peformance. A special committee of the faculty each year submits a list of journalists1 newspapers1 and magazines to a confiden tial advisory council made up of leaders in various depart ments of journalism1 and in many cases special committees are set up to study particular problems that may arise in connection with the choosing of medalists for the year. The nominees presented by this faculty committee upon the advice of the council are voted on by the faculty 1 and the elections are certified by the Board of Curators of the University of Missouri.

In general1 individuals who have distinguished themselves in any area of journalism1 including a graduate of this school, along with a representative of journalism in the State of Missouri, a great American newspaper or magazine, and a foreign publication are singled out for these awards. This year we have selected three publications and three individuals. I should like to have the representatives of the publica tions step to the lectern as I read their respective citations. The honor which you have conferred upon my newspaper today not only honors the men and women of our staff but, at the same time, the country which has produced it. An expression such as this adds to the strength of the solid base on which we are build ing a m u t u a 11 y beneficial relationship between our two countries. Awards for Distinguished service in Journalism 1955

TO THE OMAHA WORLD-HERALD in recognition of its ninety years of service to the people of its city and region; its exemplary demonstration of well rounded newspaper coverage and editing ; and its position as a leading spokesman for the great central basin of the .J\1is souri River.

I accept this award very gratefully on behalf of Jhe 'World-'Herald in Omaha. Since I conceive myself to be a momentary representative of all American newspapermen who try to serve their communities and their country, I accept also for them. Thank you very much. The university of Missouri Bulletin

TO THE ST. This is a very gracious act you do. The policy of the University of Missouri in bestow ing these awards is well understood by the staffs of 1he St. Joseph 'News-Press and 1he yazette. We, too, believe in recognition for public service and a kind word for a man while that man is still alive. On behalf of our staffs, thank you for this honor. Awards for Distinguished service in Journalism 1955

TO WALTER C. JOHNSON in recognition of a lifetime of n f? wspaper work, including almost a half-century of devoted service to the Southern 7\Jewspaper Publishers Association ; his contributions to plac ing in proper perspective the principles and the record of the profession of journalism ; his exceptional capacity for friend ship, and constant desire to help others ; and his continuing interest in education for journalism .

'Walter C. Johnson

It is very gratifying to me to accept this medal from the University of Missouri. While the award is made in my name, the "distinguished service" has been by the publishers and editors of the newspapers comprising the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association with which I have been connected in various executive capaci ties for some forty years . .As its executive officer my part was merely that of collecting and disseminating information about the work being done in bringing our Schools of Journalism to their present high standards. The university of Missouri Bulletin

TO CARROLL B. LARRABEE in recognition of his distinguished career and outstanding achievement as publisher and chairman of one of the world"s greatest business periodicals - Printers' Ink; his continuous leadership and effort to improve the uses of advertising and the responsibilities of advertising people ; his devotion and contribution to the .American business system for more than thirty-five years.

Carroll B. Larrabee

An award of this kind from an institution as outstanding as the Missouri School of Journalism makes me very proud. I am particularly happy that this great school has again recognized the place of the business paper as an important factor in the field of journal ism. The business press of the United States performs many outstanding services to the American community. I feel you are honoring the business press through me. Awards for Distinguished service in Journalism 1955

TO HUGH TERRY in recognition of his remarkably high professional and civic ideals; his matchless record of community leadership 1 his out standing success as a radio and television station manager 1 and his tireless devotion to the over-all betterment of the broadcasting industry.

'Rugh Jerry

It is exciting and thrilling to come back to my Alma Mater for this experience. I am honored by the award and I am sure that it is also symbolic recognition of the role that management is playing in radio and television journalism. I want to express my thanks to you, Dean Engli~h, and to your colleagues, for the very gen erous words of the citation and for this medal which I will treasure forever. I also want to express my appreciation to the wonderful faculty here and to this great School of Jour nalism to which I owe so very much. The university of Missouri Bulletin
