West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954), Saturday 17 July 1937, page 6 BUILDERS OF THE STATE. John Henry Monger. FROM the first days of settlement in Western Australia members of the Monger family have been closely identified with its development and have contributed their full quota to its progress. John Henry Monger, senior, an immigrant from England, arrived here in 1830 within a year of the Colony's foundation. He seems to have tem porarily made his home in what is now known as the Leederville Ward of Greater Perth. Two place names of our city perpetuate that of the Monger family -- Lake Monger and Monger street. It was near the lake that John Henry Monger, jun., the subject of this notice, was born 107 years ago. The family did not long remain domiciled so near the capital, but trekked eastward. Ensign Dale's explorations of the Avon Valley and reports concerning its agricultural possibilities led the founder of the Monger family to take up land in the York district, with which some of its representatives have ever since been closely connected. Here farming operations were carried on in a comparatively small way until John Henry Monger, jun., on his father's death, succeeded to the modest paternal estate which, under his masterful hands, was so greatly enlarged that when he died in 1892 it embraced an area of 30,000 acres of freehold and conditional purchase land, much of it among the richest in the country. The estate was soon highly developed. Monger's broad acres were cultivated if not as scentifically as are the best farms of today in strict accordance with the approved husbandry practices of the time. Grazing operations were conducted not less successfully. Both as farmer and pastoralist John Henry Monger set high standards for his dis trict. He was not afraid of making experiments. One on which he was among the first to venture one in which sheep were concerned amounted almost to a managerial revolution. He abandoned the traditional practice of having his sheep shepherded. Convinced that this system was good neither for the sheep owner nor his flocks, he resolved on trying another. Reliable shepherds were not readily to be had, and of shepherds who were employed many neglected their charges or unnecessarily harassed them. The remedy, J. H. Monger was persuaded, lay in fencing and to fencing he had recourse. The result of his example and precept touching this matter was an ever widening adoption of fencing to which he substantially contributed by importing large quantities of fencing wire and supplying it to pastoralists on long and easy terms of credit. It was not to the cultivation of cereals and the raising of sheep that this progressive and boldly enterprising West Australian restricted his activities. He established a mercantile business with branches in Perth, York and elsewhere, a business which fully shared, with the two older firms, that of John Bateman, Fremantle, and that of George Shenton in Perth, in the wholesale and retail trading business of the country. Monger's wholesale warehouse in the city was situated in William-street, a property ultimately acquired by Dalgety and Co., who having demolished the old premises now occupy the site with their offices. The retail business was carried on in Hay-street and did not pass into other hands until affer its founder's death in 1892. Nearly 30 years prior to this, J. H. Monger, following on the discovery that for West Australian sandalwood there was a market in China, proceeded vigorously to exploit it. For long he was the Colony's leading exporter of this aromatic wood. It is not easy for the present generation of West Australians to realise what the sandalwood trade

Page 1 of 17 Friday, March 20, 2020 4:57:10 PM Generation 1 (cont.) not easy for the present generation of West Australians to realise what the sandalwood trade meant for this country in the late sixties, the seventies and eighties of last century. Its value for a time ranked second among the Colony's exports, while it provided employment directly and indirectly for an army of workers who would otherwise have been idle. Hundreds of cutters were engaged in the bush felling the wood, while wheelrights and blacksmiths in Perth, Guildford and York found it difficult to keep pace with the demand for new drays and waggons and for repairs to old ones which together made up the endless streams of sandalwood teams on the roads between the city and the sandal wood camps throughout what ls now the eastern and north-eastern sections of the wheatbelt. Owing to the growth of motor traffic a farrier is now a curiosity, but in the sandalwooding days his forges were to be seen in every town and village, with horses often in long queues waiting to be shod. This sandalwood trade which J. H. Monger amazingly developed also provided a good deal of employment for men who trimmed the product clean of bark and outer sappy growth before shipping and for wharf labourers. It was John Henry Monger who opened up this export trade and was for some time the largest purchaser of the commodity. Among his many other activities must be mentioned that of shipowner. Jointly with George Shenton he owned the barque Helena Mena, named after the owners' respective eldest daughters. The Helena Mena, with a sister ship, the Charlotte Padbury, voyaged regularly between Perth and London, making annually one trip each way with an outward cargo mostly of wool and an inward cargo of general merchandise. For many years after the Colony was founded a currency problem was continually recurring. Even after the first bank was established coin or bank notes were not always readily obtainable. It was because of this state of things that John Henry Monger and other commercial houses issued cash orders, a practice which while it led occasionally to abuses seems generally to have served a public convenience. -J. H. Monger was a member of the old Legislative Council. One of his sons, the late F. C. Monger, long represented the York district in the Legislative Assembly. Another son, the only surviving member of a family of four sons and four daughters, is Alex Monger, who occupies the ancestral home, Faversham, York, and who, like his father, has large pastoral and agricultural interests and strives, like him, at being a model landed proprietor. It should be mentioned that John Henry Monger built and presented to the Methodist body the church it now occupies in the town of York.

Notes for John Henry Monger: West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954), Wednesday 24 February 1892, page 5 DEATH OF MR. J. H. MONGER, M.L.C It is with most sincere regret that we record the death of Mr. J. H. Monger, M.L.C. It was only in yesterday's issue that we announced his arrival at his home in York, and the hope was then expressed that, in spite of the severe illness which had wrought so great a change in his usually robust appearance, back again in the town with which his name is so closely identified, his health would recover, and many years of life and usefulness might yet be before him. That wish was, however, not to be fulfilled. Mr. Monger returned to his home just in time to breathe his last in an atmosphere and amid scenes which had been familiar to him for the last thirty years. The final scene occurred at eleven o'clock yesterday morning, and in his own home, and sur-rounded by all the members of his family, John Henry Monger, one of the most notable of our native born colonists, peacefully passed to his rest. Our York correspondent telegraphs that the news of his death was received with deep and sincere grief throughout the town and district, and needless to say the same feelings were in the ascendent in Perth when the mournful tidings reached tha capital. The announcement has been received with unreserved expressions of regret and sym-pathy, regret at the loss of such a tried and valued colonist, and sympathy with his family. The deceased gentleman has been ailing in health for some months past and it was with the object of benefiting bis health that he went to the Eastern Colonies. His condition, however, did not improve and although at times the hopes of his friends were raised by some favourable bulletin, the next would an-nounce a change for the worse. Under these circumstances it was considered advisable that he should return to Western Australia. He returned to this colony by the mail steamer from Adelaide which arrived at Albany last Saturday, and he journeyed to York from Albany by special tram on Sunday. With the most careful attention, however, he failed to make any advancement towards recovery, and yesterday, as already said, he breathed his last. John Henry Monger was the son of one of the first of our pioneer colonists. Over sixty years ago his father, who was a sawyer, used to work in the vicinity of what is now known as Monger's Lake, near Subiaco. It was here that John Henry Monger first saw the light of day. He was one of the first Europeans born in this colony. In his early days his father went to the Eastern districts, which were discovered just about that time. It was he that founded the present town of York, where be established the first house of business. For about twenty prosperous years he carried on business here, and when he died he left four sons and one daughter to mourn their loss. John Henry Monger was the eldest son, and had a few years previous to his father's death, taken over the mercantile business in York. Since this time he has continued to reside in York, and has built up for himself a large and successful business. Of late years he went in largely for agricul-ture, and he was one of the first to introduce ring-barking, and by this means, largely in-creased the carrying capacity of the York country. He was also a very successful breeder of stock, and his success in this direction, is principally attributable to the enterprise he showed in importing first class stock for breeding purposes. During the last year or two ho has exhibited largely at the agricultural shows, and has carried off a large number of prizes. As a public man also he has filled positions with credit to himself and advantage to his country. He had been Chairman of the York Municipality, and President of the Agricultural Society. He was also a Justice of the Peace, and was an original member of the first Legislative Council under Responsible Government. In the neighbourhood of York John Henry Monger leaves a host of friends in all classes of the community, and many farmers and settlers will remember with feelings of grati-tude the helping hand extended to them in their early struggles, and will miss his kind and genial words as well as his useful and valuable

The deceased gentleman leaves a wife and family of four sons and four daughters, and two brothers-Messrs. Stephen and George Monger-who were present at his death bed. As he expressed a wish to be buried in Perth. by the side of his father and mother, the remains will be brought down by train to-day, and the funeral will leave the residence of the Hon. E.T. Hooley, M.L.C., at 4.30 o'clock this afternoon. As a mark of respect to the deceased, the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon im-mediately after meeting adjourned its sitting. The Colonial Secretary, in moving the adjourn-ment, referred in sincere terms of regret at the loss which the country had sustained by the death of Mr. Monger, whose name, be said, was a household word in West Australia.

Notes for Henrietta Joaquina Manning: Eastern Districts Chronicle (York, WA : 1877 - 1927), Saturday 20 October 1894, page 6 Death of Mrs. J. H. Monger. It is with extreme regret we find it our duty to chronicle the death of Mrs J. H. Monger, at Faversham House, York, which sad event took place at her residence on Sunday afternoon last. The deceased had been a great sufferer for many months past, and with the (Exception of a few brief intervals was for so the weeks confined to her room. The deceased lady was highly esteemed by those included within the circle of her acquaintance, and very general regret at her death was expressed on all sides. The cause of death was cancer. Mrs. Monger leaves behind a family of seven-three sons and four daughters, to whom much sympathy is extended in their bereavement. On Monday morning, before proceeding to the Railway Station, a short service was conducted at Faversham House by the Rev. Fry, and among the large number present were many leading residents of the town and district. At the conclusion of the service the corpse was conveyed to the Station in a hearse, Which was literally smothered with wreaths sent by various friends of the deceased. The pall-bearers were the Resident Magistrate (Mr. F. A. Hare), Mr. F. Craig, Mr. E. Doucon, and Mr. J. Johnston, the chief mourners being: Mr. F. C. Monger, M.L A., and Mr. A. J. Monger. Upon arrival at the Station the coffin was placed in a truck draped With black, and conveyed to the; Metropolis by the mail-train for interment in the Wesleyan Cemetery. The remains of the late Mrs. J. H. Monger (says the Daily News of Tuesday) were brought to Perth from York yesterday morning. In the afternoon, at 3 o'clock, an impressive funeral service was held at Wesley Church. The pulpit, chancel, and communion table had been draped black by Mrs. Howe, and lillies and other beautiful white flowers relieved the sombre shade. The coffin was taken into Church amidst the solemn tolling of the bell, and the strains of the "Dead March " from " Saul," which was played by Mr. Ernest Crome, the organist of the Church. The precession down the aisle was, headed by the Revs. T. Bird and A. S. J, Fry, the former reading the service for the dead. Following the coffin were relatives and friends of the deceased lady. The Revs. T. Bird, A. S. J. Fry, W.A. Potts and A. J. Barclay took part in the service, which was a very impressive one. Mr. Bird delivered a short address. He said troubles had come thick and fast upon the family of the deceased, for the news of the death of her daughter's husband was received almost at the time she herself passed away. How feeble were their words of comfort to express the deep sense of sorrow at their double, bereavement, but they realised that God was able to speak words of comfort to the sorrow-stricken. It was not an earthly voice, but a voice from heaven -which said “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labours and their works follow them." It was pleasing to form a recollection of the sufferer's perfect trust in her Redeemer, and of the comforting hope of a future state of happiness which | cheered her, of her love of all things noble, kind and true, of her uncompromising condemnation of anything approaching sham, and her earnest sincerity and purity of motive that was only equalled by her appreciation of all, that was

Page 9 of 17 Friday, March 20, 2020 4:57:10 PM Generation 2 (cont.) earnest sincerity and purity of motive that was only equalled by her appreciation of all, that was Christlike and unselfish. They called to recollection her love of the services of God's house, and her appreciation of the opportunities afforded tor the cultivation of the spirit of Christ; and it was for them, remembering this, to earnestly pray to the God of all Providence that their eyes might be opened, and that they might be sanctified in His service, and that hereafter they might meet those who had gone before. Two most beautiful hymns were sung, the service closing with prayer by Mr. Fry. The coffin covered with beautiful flowers, both loose and in wreaths, was then conveyed to the hearse by the pall-bearers, and the solemn cortege moved to the cemetery. The chief mourners were Mrs. Frank Monger, Mrs. Hope, and Mrs. Moorhead, daughters of the deceased lady , Messrs Fred O. Monger, M.L.A., and A. J. Monger, sons; Dr. Hope and sons, and Mr. F. W. Moorhead. Gathered around the grave were noticed the Premier (Sir , K G.M.G.), Hon. Sir George Shenton, M.L.C., Hon. W. E. Marmion, M.L A , Hon. R. W. Hardey, M.L.C., Hon. E. H. Wittenoom, M.L.C.; Messrs A. Forrest, M.LA., W .Traylen,M.L A, B. C. Wood, M.L.A., R. F. Sholl, M.L.A., C. J. Moran, M.L.A., Hon, H. McKernan, M.L.C., J. Cowan, P.M., Robt. Hardey, W. G. Glyde junr., R. Fairbairn, R.M., E. Sholl, C. Y. O'Connor, A. W. Hassell, W. Strickland, W. A. Gale, C. Steere, and E. K. Courthope. The service was read by the Revs. T. Bird and A. S.
