en los últimos años se ha presentado en la Ciudad de México y en especial a la denominada Ciudad Central, donde la Delegación Cuauhtémoc junto con las demarcaciones de Benito Juárez, Miguel Hidalgo y Venustiano Carranza conforman dicha centralidad; hacen necesaria la tarea de revisar, modificar y actualizar su Programa Delegacional de Desarrollo Urbano, instrumento que permite la vinculación de los objetivos y estrategias de los diferentes

A large number of residents, organized by family and specialty, make their livings this way. ochimilco is a town with character and X pride in itself. This lake region was populated in pre-Hispanic times by warriors from mythical Aztlán, amidst plentiful water, good fishing and generous harvests. Here, towns were founded that exist to this day, complete with their indigenous tra- ditions and customs. One of these is Acalpixca, known today for its multi-co- lored sweets, a delight to the palate. ORIGINS Seven tribes of Nahuatlacas (“people who speak clearly” in Náhuatl) left Aztlán on a pilgrimage to the Anáhuac Valley. The ones known as Xochimilcas were the first to leave, in the “year of the Lord 820” (the tenth century A.D.), and settled on the Cuahilama Hill in the old Xochimilco Lake area. They built their ceremonial center atop the hill, from where they could survey the movement of canoes, fend off attacks and care for their crops. Figures carved in stone represent- ing their gods in the form of animals and other symbols remain there, tracing the path to the top called the Great Boulevard. The cere- monial esplanade still shows vestiges of the Nahuatl conception of the universe: stones carved with the glyph of Nahui Ollin, who repre- sented the so-called fifth sun,1 and an ocelotl (jaguar) playing with flowers and butterflies.

Photos: Elsie Montiel he Colonia Roma, or Roma neighbor hood, has some of Mexico City’s longest-standing tra - ditions. Founded December 30, 1902, it was the first residential area of the twentieth Tcentury. The neighborhood was developed by the Chapul tepec Avenue Land Company, headed up by English businessman Eduardo Walter Orrin, founder of the famous Orrin Circus. The land the new neighborhood was to be built on bordered a little pre-Hispanic town called Azta calco, which means “in the house of the herons.” In the eighteenth century, this town was re-baptized Romita (“little Rome”) be cause it had a beautiful tree-lined avenue (Chapultepec Avenue) that went all the way to the Chapultepec forest, which was very similar to one that existed in Rome, Italy. When the land for the new development was laid out, it took the name of the old town. Around 1530, the Santa María de la Nati vidad Church was built in Romita, where Friar Pedro de Gante baptized the local indigenous, and which to this day preserves one of the cruci - fixes sent by Carlos V, an image of Our Lord of Buen Ahorcado and a series of interesting eigh - teenth-century paintings by Antonio Torres.
