CON-HORSE-TIONIST

ACROBATS FORM 6FT HUMAN RACEHORSE RIDDEN BY STEFFI HOFER PASSING THE WINNING POST AT TO CELEBRATE THE DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP

Key Facts • 10 = number of acrobats to make the human racehorse • 5 = number of hours for hair and make up • 7 = number of hours to create the figure • 6ft = final height of the horse

To celebrate the world’s premier international jockeys’ competition, the upcoming Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a giant racehorse cleverly created out of contortionists, was unveiled on July 21 at Ascot Racecourse.

Painted in elaborate body art, the 6ft-figure was made up of 10 contortionists and it took seven hours to create the striking image of a racehorse ridden by German jockey, Stefanie Hofer passing the winning post at the famous racecourse. Hofer will be making her debut at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup this year as part of The Girls team, alongside Canadian Emma-Jayne Wilson and Brit, Hayley Turner.

Ascot Racecourse enlisted a team of talented contortionists, courtesy of Scarlett Entertainment, and used make-up artists, Civilised Mess, to transform the human bodies using detailed animal artwork. It took the make-up artists five hours of intricate work to fully complete the body paintwork. Civilised Mess has previously created designs for Cirque Le Soir and Slamboree.

Nick Smith, Head of Communications and International Racing at Ascot Racecourse, said: “This year we wanted to do something genuinely different to celebrate our renewed and enhanced partnership with Dubai Duty Free, who have extended their support of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup by becoming sole sponsor from this year. The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is a unique competition and deserved something striking to mark its place on the calendar. The acrobats and Steffi performed miracles to produce this pose and we hope everyone will agree that it is fascinating to see them transformed into the image of a winning racehorse passing the post at Ascot.”

Dubai Duty Free announced as official sponsors at Ascot including enhanced Shergar Cup rights

Ascot Racecourse was delighted to announce on April 25 that Dubai Duty Free have become official sponsors at Ascot for the first time with annual benefits headlined by continued title sponsorship of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup for a further three years.

The world’s biggest duty free operator was also confirmed as having exclusive naming rights to all six races on the Shergar Cup card.

Dubai Duty Free have been involved with Ascot since the move of the team jockeys’ competition from Goodwood in 2000, first as Rest of the World team sponsors and, from 2006, as event sponsors.

In line with this new agreement, all six races on the card will be raised in value by £10,000 to £40,000 each.

Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, said: “We have been associated with the Shergar Cup from the outset and have seen it develop into a unique and hugely popular event in the British racing and social calendar.

“We have pledged our continued support until at least 2016 and, for the first time this year, will add sponsorship of every race on the day to our established status as title sponsor of this event and official sponsor at one of the world’s leading sporting venues.

“We are delighted to have been able to work with Ascot to achieve an increase of more than 30% in the prize money for every race.

“The line-up of international jockeys is taking shape and I am sure this year’s renewal will be as competitive as ever.”

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup race programme comprises six competitive handicaps which continue to be well supported by many of the sport’s leading trainers.

Andrew Balding, who is the event’s most successful trainer said:

“This increase in prize money at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup makes the meeting even more attractive and is just another reason why I will be very keen to support the fixture again this year.

“I have always enjoyed the Shergar Cup - it offers something different and is a chance for people to appreciate the jockeys – it is very much about the jockeys. And the format, as it is now, makes for some very competitive racing.

“My owners have always thoroughly enjoyed the day and have been very well looked after by Ascot.”

Charles Barnett, Chief Executive at Ascot added:

“The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is key to our overall global strategy for Ascot. We spend a lot of time promoting the Royal Meeting and King George to overseas owners and trainers and on this unique day of the year, that theme extends to the world’s best jockeys.

“We have seen stars from all over the world take part in the Shergar Cup and it is always fascinating to see the champions of various regions going head to head with sometimes quite different styles.

“Last year, we welcomed the out-of-retirement from the USA along with compatriot , the top female rider in that part of the world, along with Joao Moreira from Brazil, who subsequent to impressing everyone in the Shergar Cup has become one of the top riders based in .

“The teams for this year are shaping up to be just as exciting, especially as we are welcoming back the enigmatic Canadian legend, Emma-Jayne Wilson, who is one of the event’s biggest fans and ambassadors.

“We could not do this without the invaluable support of Dubai Duty Free and look forward to working with them on the event going forward.”

7 THE PRIZES

The Shergar Cup

At stake for the winning team is the magnificent Shergar Cup, which depicts the mighty 1981 Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner. It was graciously provided by His Highness The Aga Khan, who owned Shergar.

Points will be awarded to the first five horses to finish in each of the six Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup races as follows - winner: 15 points; second: 10 points; third: 7 points; fourth: 5 points; fifth: 3 points. If there is a non-runner which cannot be replaced by a reserve, 4 points will be awarded both to the team and jockey missing out on the ride. The team with the most points after the six races have been run will receive the Shergar Cup at the closing ceremony.

If a dead-heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and shared between the two jockeys/teams.

If there is a tie for the Team or Silver Saddle competitions, there will be a countback on the number of winners and the team/jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall; if they are still level, then second places will be counted, then if necessary third places, then if necessary fourth places. If they are still level, there will be joint winners.

The six races are worth a boosted total of £240,000 in prize money, paid down to 10th (last) place in all six races. With no entry fees to pay and £500 in number cloth sponsorship per contest for 4-televised races, these are the only races run during the year in Britain when every owner represented by a runner should be guaranteed to, at the very least, cover their costs.

Silver Saddle

The jockey amassing the most individual points will take home an additional £3,000 plus the “Silver Saddle” trophy.

David Flores in 2001, Richard Hughes in 2002, in 2003, Weichong Marwing in 2004, in 2006, in 2007, Gerald Mosse in 2008, Richard Hughes for a second time in 2009, Fran Berry in 2010, in 2011, in 2012 and Gerald Mosse in 2013 are the past winners of the Silver Saddle.

9 DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP RULES

The competition is an international jockeys’ tournament with 12 riders taking part, three in each of the four teams - The Girls (GIRLS) Great Britain & Ireland (GBI), Europe (EUR) and the Rest of the World (ROW). All horses entered are eligible to represent one of the four teams, regardless of ownership, and to be ridden by any of the jockeys participating in the competition.

The six races will be limited to 10 runners and three reserves (up from two previously).

Reserves must travel to Ascot on the day and can be substituted up until 45 minutes before their race. Reserves who do not run will be paid £500.

Entries must be made noon on Monday, August 4.

Declarations to run must be made at the 48-hour stage, by 10.00am on Thursday, August 7. The top 10 in the weights (including penalties) at the 48-hour declaration stage will run with those horses 11th, 12th and 13th in the weights acting as reserves.

DUBAI DUTY FREE SHERGAR CUP 'DRAW' PROCEDURE

The British Horseracing Authority has granted special permission to the Ascot Racecourse Executive to stage a 'Draw' on Thursday, August 7, at which jockeys from the four competing teams will be allocated to horses.

ALLOCATION OF HORSES TO TEAMS AND JOCKEYS TO MOUNTS

1. In all races, the horses selected to run will be those with the highest official BHA ratings.

2. Once the final fields are known on Thursday, August 7, the 10 runners in each race will be ranked from 1 to 10 by form experts/odds compilers from Winning Post, the Official Bookmaker to the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. A complex formula has been created to ensure that each of the four teams - Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and The Girls - receives a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses and, further to that, that each of the three jockeys representing each team also gets a balanced spread of higher and lower ranked/priced horses for his/her five rides.

3. Once the ranking process has been completed, the four team names will go into a ballot. The order in which they are randomly drawn will determine which set of horses is allocated to each team.

4. A second ballot will then take place. The three jockeys representing each team will be drawn at random to determine an order (e.g. The Girls 1, The Girls 2 & The Girls 3) and will then be allocated to their rides according to the set formula.

5. The allocation of rides by this method will be final. Any trainer declaring a horse to run at the 48- hour declaration stage is deemed to have accepted these conditions.

6. All owners of participating horses agree that jockeys will wear the colours of the team which they represent as part of an agreement with the Racehorse Owners Association.

REMEMBERING SHERGAR

Shergar’s name is etched in racing folklore as much for his headline-grabbing demise as for his exceptional performances on the racecourse, the most scintillating of those being his record-breaking victory in the 1981 Derby.

Famously kidnapped by the IRA following his retirement to stud, the Aga Khan’s was one of the finest Derby winners of the 20th century and without argument the best racehorse of his generation with a lofty rating of 140.

Trained by Michael Stoute in Newmarket, Shergar won impressively on his first start as a two-year- old before finishing second to the more experienced on his only other outing in what is now the Racing Post Trophy.

Having been rated 31st among his peers in the 1980 , Shergar commenced his Classic season as a 33/1 ante-post chance for the Derby. Those odds tumbled after a 10-length victory in Sandown’s Classic Trial was followed by a 12-length demolition in the .

Shergar lined up at as the 10/11 favourite for Derby glory. He did not disappoint his supporters as he once again accelerated away from inferior rivals to register a stunning 10-length success - the widest winning margin in the long history of the premier Classic.

With the Epsom Classic in the bag, Shergar went to the Curragh and added the Irish Derby by four lengths before routing his elders by the same distance in Britain’s premier all-age middle-distance contest, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

The stage was set for an autumn hurrah in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp but in an unexpected twist, connections decided to take in the St Leger at Doncaster. The extended mile and three quarters of the world’s oldest Classic proved beyond Shergar’s stamina reserves and he could fare no better than fourth.

That defeat was to be Shergar’s final race. Valued at £10 million, the colt retired to the Aga Khan’s Ballymany Stud in Ireland but on February 8, 1983, hooded gunmen seized the . A £2-million ransom was demanded and refused. Shergar’s fate remains a mystery.

Dubai Duty Free, which celebrated its 30th anniversary on December 20, 2013, recorded annual sales of US$1.8 billion last year and is on track to reach a new record figure in 2014.

Employing 6,000 people, Dubai Duty Free has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing and it continues to grow.

Currently operating over 26,000 square metres of retail space at Dubai International Airport (DIA), the retail footprint will expand by a further 7,000 square metres with the opening of Concourse D in 2015. This new concourse will cover some 65,0000 square metres and will be the home to the 100 airlines that currently operate from DIA’s Terminal 1, Concourse C. Meanwhile, the Dubai Duty Free operation at Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central continues to do well and covers 2,500 square metres.

With half year sales reaching US$934 million at Dubai Duty Free, Executive Vice Chairman, Colm McLoughlin, said: “We are pleased that 2014 is shaping up to be such a positive year for Dubai Duty Free. We have had a busy summer months and are looking forward to an equally busy period following the completion of the runway upgrades at Dubai International Airport. The opening of Concourse D next year will provide us with a further opportunity to expand our business and to introduce new products and brands.”

Mr McLoughlin was one of 10 Irish duty free experts from the state-owned Aer Rianta including his deputy, George Horan, who is now President of Dubai Duty Free, who flew into the emirate on a six-month assignment to advise the Dubai government on the creation of a duty free in 1983.

Over the last three decades, he has seen the organisation grow into the one of the world's biggest brands. Celebrated for its ground-breaking promotions, Dubai Duty Free has received more than 400 travel and retail industry-related awards including the DFNI Global Awards for Travel-Retail Excellence held in April for “Best Airport Travel Retailer of the Year” and “Best New Shop Opening”; “Best Enterprise Award” and “Manager of the Year” (Colm McLoughlin) from the Europe Business Assembly, also held in April in London.

In May, Dubai Duty Free received the Business Traveller Middle East Awards for “Best Airport for Duty Free Shopping” and the DFNI Awards - Asia Pacific Awards for Travel-Retail Excellence for “Middle East Travel Retailer of the Year” and the “Superbrands” award received from the Superbrands Council UAE in June.

In October, 2013, Colm McLoughlin was honoured with the “Sir Michael Smurfit Business Award” presented at the 25th Annual American Celtic Ball held in , and the “CEO of the Year” at the 3rd Asian Quality Leadership Award for his outstanding contribution to the travel retail industry. He was also presented with the “Lifetime Achievement” Editor’s Choice award at the inaugural Condé Nast Traveller Middle East Awards.

The brand is synonymous with some of 's biggest events, beginning in March with the US$5-million Dubai Duty Free on Dubai World Cup night at Meydan. The following month saw the two-day Dubai Duty Free 'Spring Trials' meeting at Newbury, an early season guide to the Classics, and an occasion graced by the presence of Her Majesty, The Queen in recent years.

Dubai Duty Free was at The recently for the 7th Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival, which is one of the most eagerly-awaited events in the Irish racing, sporting and social calendar. Attracting a crowd of almost 24,000, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby was once again a success and generated major TV and print media exposure for Dubai Duty Free and for Dubai itself.

After its visit in early August to Ascot for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, the company pays a second visit to Newbury the following month for the two-day Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, which traditionally attracts a host of top horses and riders.
