when the device is turned on, everything is live electrically. “With the old layout, one couldn’t have head-on collisions,” Hook said. “With DCC, if you’re not careful, you can.” “I do soder all of the joints together for better electrical continuity,” Hook said. In his 900 square foot basement, cars and locomotives are displayed on two wooden shelves as there isn’t any room on the tracks. Throughout Hook’s 60 years of collecting trains, he has nearly 200 cars and 30 locomotives that he purchased at multiple train shows in Kansas City. The Santa Fe passenger engine locomotive is one in which Hook is particularly proud of because he spent hours painting the train red and silver along with applying decals. “The only train store within driving distance from Sauk Centre is in Waite Park, but they are more heavily into radio planes and cars,” Hook said. “I do still order things from a hobby manufacturer and supplier located in Milwaukee called Walthers.” Three hours a week, Hook will tinker with the trains in his basement – taking his time and enjoying the hobby as he has no rush to get it done. “I’ve read about those who build the layouts in their spare time. When they get a layout  nished, they tear it down and start over again. That’s why mine doesn’t get any farther than what it is because I do like to run the trains,” Hook said. “Once you’re running it and hear the engine running, it’s fun and neat to hear that.” Every day, and especially this time of year, Hook often walks around the table to where a black Kansas City Southern train sits – one that his father, whom is now deceased, built 65 years ago. “My dad never painted the locomotive and I took it one year, painted it black, mounted it on a display board and gave it back to him for Father’s Day. It was displayed on his mantle until he passed away,” Hook said. “While we never had a train around the Christmas tree, Christmas time was the time when most of the work was done on the layouts.”
