VanWinkle, Ph.D. Department: College of Education v Abstract Motivating students to read is challenging, and 49 states have children’s choice book programs whose main purpose is to motivate students to read. This quantitative research study determined if, in three rural middle schools, a relationship exists between sixth, seventh, and eighth graders reading the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Award (RCYRBA) books and reading motivation. The Adolescent Motivation to Read Profile (Pitcher, et al., 2007) survey was used for data collection; the data was analyzed using multiple regression. The results indicate there is a relationship between middle school students’ reading motivation and the reading of RCYRBA books, gender, grade level, and reading grades. Future research should study the causal relationship between reading motivation and students’ reading of the RCYRBA books. vi Table of Content s Page Table of Appendices     [ Music ] >> Each year, thousands of booklovers of all ages visit the nation's capital to celebrate the joys of reading and lifelong literacy at the National Book Festival, sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush. Now in its eighth year, this free event held on the National Mall Saturday, September 27th, will spark readers' passion for learning as they interact with the nation's bestselling authors, illustrators and poets. Even if you can't attend the festival in person, you can participate online. These podcasts with authors will be available through the Book Festival website at www.loc.gov/bookfest, and you can find a whole suite of other materials there as well. [ Music ] I now have the honor of talking with the well-known children's author, Jon Scieszka. In addition to authoring The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Fairytales, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, and Smash Crash, which is part of his new Trucktown Series for young readers, Mr. Scieszka was recently named the first National Ambassador for Young People's Literature by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. That position was created by the Library's Center for the Book, and the Children's Book Council, to raise national awareness of the importance of children's literature in fostering lifelong literacy and enriching the lives of young people. The recipient of several book award honors including the Publisher's Weekly Cuffies Award, and the Caldecott honor, Mr. Scieszka has also appeared on the Martha Stewart Show and NPR's All Things Considered.

Now, on its 9th year, this free event held Saturday, September 26th on the National Mall in Washington DC will spark readers' passion for learning as they interact with the nation's best-selling authors, illustrators, and poets. Even if you can't attend in person, you can still participate online. This podcast with well-known authors and other materials are available through the National Book Festival website at www.loc.gov/bookfest. So now, my honor to talk with one of my favorite interviews to do and that is the children's author Jon Scieszka. He has a widely popular list of books that include The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, and Robot Zot!, which is due out little bit later this year. Mr. Scieszka's entertaining stories have been honored with the Publishers Weekly Cuffies awards and the Caldecott Honor. Mr. Scieszka is one of many authors participating in the Exquisite Corpse Adventure story. The story which premiers September 26th on the day of the festival is a collaborative effort with the Library of Congress, The National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance, and numerous writers. To support these goals we require that all rising Form I students read three books they have not previously read (Red Kayak is required) and complete a reading log for each book they read. Please carefully follow the instructions below: • Read Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings • Read two additional books from the reading list or the Reading Olympics book list. For a summary and preview of the books on the list go to Goodreads. Please let me know if you want to read a book that is not on the list. • Complete a reading log for the three books. • Print a copy of all three reading logs and bring them to class on the first day of school with your copy of Red Kayak Directions for Reading Log: • Write five journal entries for each book you read. • For each journal entry choose a significant passage. • Write the passage in your journal. • Record the page number on which the passage appears. • Explain the significance of the passage (Things to consider in your response: Why is the quotation important? What does the quotation show about the characters, setting, conflict, plot and theme? Can you make any text-text, text-self, text-world connections?     Walpole Public Schools Elementary Summer Reading Program Dear Parents and Students: Research tells us that when students don’t read for two months their skills regress. Reading is a skill, which requires practice, just like sports or math facts. Summer reading helps students of all ages keep their skills sharp so they are ready when school begins again in the fall. Reading throughout the summer not only enhances basic reading skills of young students, it creates unique opportunities for learning, exploring, and growing. The Walpole Public Schools Elementary Summer Reading Program is designed to promote reading and learning as enjoyable activities. The following is a suggested guide to authors, resources and activities for children to share their reading experiences. Please choose any title that may interest you from any other sources. Magazines, graphic novels, audio books and eBooks also provide valuable educational experiences. We strongly encourage parents to read aloud, including to those children who are already independent readers. In addition to being a wonderful family activity, children increase their listening vocabulary, which improves their comprehension. It also allows them to develop interests beyond their reading levels. This summer there is one requirement: Students entering grades 1-5 are required to complete one sharing activity, which will contribute to the first term grade in literacy. The directions and pages for this activity are attached along with a summary and an example of the product. During the first two weeks of school in September, the children should return the assignment to their new teacher (by September 11); their projects will be displayed in their classrooms.
