Monterey Park resident Cici Lau has been passionate about live theater for a long time. She brings prodigious skills to this arena. By way of training, Lau earned a bachelor's degree at the University of San Francisco, took acting classes and followed numerous private acting coaches in the L.A. area. She started building her career at small theaters in the 90s, including performing in East West Players and The Los Angeles Theatre Center. Then, she branched out into roles in the movies, TV episodes, commercials, voice-over, and prints. She is an immigrant who speaks Shanghainese, Cantonese and Mandarin, and learned English at 15 in high school.

When Lau's husband, David Lau, was elected to the Monterey Park City Council, she decided to dedicate her energy and knowledge of theater arts by bringing plays to the city. In 2002, an hour-long presentation of "Mother's Love" was presented in the Friends Room at the Library. It is a short, humorous adaptation of C.Y. Lee's original story, scripted by Lau and Judy Fung, and directed by Lau with three versions in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. C.Y. Lee's fame was cemented with his highly successful novel, “The Flower Drum Song.” Lee will be 101 years old in December.

This performance was followed by "Mama from China," another comedy by C.Y. Lee at the Secret Rose Theatre in North Hollywood with a run for four weeks. A week later the set was transported to the City Council Chamber on August 13, 2004 with complimentary tickets to the audience thanks to donations from multiple sources. Lau headed a cast that included six professional actors. The dialog was presented in Mandarin with English narration. The production was produced, acted, directed and adapted by Lau and John Yang, with four performances held at the City 2006 saw "Hearts of Gold," a heart-warming, delightful comedic drama written by Lau Council Chamber. and played the lead with cast of eight, directed by George Cheung at the council chamber for several performances. The DVD is in the collection at the Library. 2007 brought a stage reading of "Twelve Angry Women" that was produced, acted, and directed by Lau and Bette Rae with a cast of 12 actors. It was presented at the City Council In 2013 Lau brought the Award Winning Playwright Clarence Coo's play, "Bahala Na Chamber as well. The play toured through eight libraries in Early 2008 saw a stage play of Homer's Epic Poem "The Odyssey” written by Dr. the San Gabriel Valley area including the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. With a $500 grant from the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, 24 advanced students worked for a school year in Mr. Jayson Pineda’s ceramics class to design and build a magnificent three by five foot ceramic mural of Frida Kahlo for the campus. The mural was installed onto the walls of the Alhambra High Special Education garden this summer.

Each student worked on their own individual tile, and collaborated with surrounding artists to ensure alignment. Their goal is to continue installing more ceramic murals to cover the walls in the garden in order to add beauty and energy to the public spaces of the AHS campus.

This project is one of many that the new ARTS Advance AUSD - Arts Education is a Superpower campaign will showcase at the19 AUSD schools. Research shows that where arts education is integrated into the curriculum, student learning across all subjects improves; student, parent and community engagement increases; and the school culture of connection and empathy grows. The lifelong gifts of arts education include the skills of teamwork, collaboration, focus, creative problem-solving, attention , patience, and dedication to practice.
