In January 2014, the ISR Editorial Team began phasing out multiple reviews to make room for Review Essays. Like multiple book reviews, Review Essays consider a number of recently published academic works on a com- mon theme and/or debate. Unlike multiple book reviews, though, Review Essays are scholarly works that make an original contribution to the . Review Essays, thus, are fully peer-reviewed through ISR’s double-blind process. We invite academics, doctoral/PhD students, and other researchers to author Review Essays. JANICE BIALLY MATTERN,EDITOR IN CHIEF Call for Review Essays

Review Essays will consider a number of academic works (usually between two and five), which share a common theme and/or debate and collectively repre- sent an emerging or ongoing area of inquiry. Review Essays must make an original contribution to the literature. While an accurate summary of the under review is an important part of a Review Essay, the primary focus and contribution should be the reviewers’ evaluation and analysis. Review Essays should advance scholarly understanding within the relevant area of inquiry. Among the issues that reviewers should consider in constructing their essays are: the books’ key objectives and how effectively were they accomplished; the integrity of the theories and/or adopted in the books; the loca- tion of the books within the broader scholarly context; the common themes among books; the trends in international relations scholarship that may be iden- tified in the books; and the implications of the books for future in International Relations or a related discipline with an international dimension. These guidelines do not apply to contributions invited and/or submitted before January 1, 2014.

Authors interested in writing a review article on those books should contact the ISR Book Review Editor. Additional books on a common theme that are recently published but not available on the list can be proposed to the Book Review Editor. If the proposal is approved, the Book Review Editor will request those books from the relevant publishers. All books, once requested, will be shipped to the reviewer by post. Once the reviewer has received the books, the review should be completed within 3 months. Please keep in mind that Review Essays are fully peer-reviewed. Acceptance for publication is conditional on the outcome of the review process and editorial approval. Authors whose reviews have been chosen to be sent for peer review are invited to keep the books under consideration; however, authors whose reviews are rejected before the peer review stage are requested to return their books to the ISR, so that they can be sent to another author for review. In instances where a review essay is sent out for peer review but not ultimately published, the reviewer is free to keep the books.
