MIN BID AUCTION A HERMAN HITSON YOU CAN’T KEEP A GOOD SWEET ROSE 025 M- 300 MAN DOWN Absolutely marvellous crossover tune, first aired by your Uncle Tim at Thorne back in 1990 and only ever located by odd copies ever since. Soul to spare on this one – a spellbinding tune. BUT NOW the other side, the ferocious funk of ‘Ain’t No Other Way’ is playable too – so we’ve included the soundbite of that as well. B RUBIN YOU’VE BEEN AWAY KAPP 869 M- 510 Whilst it is true that Northern Soul is basically the sound of the Motown copyist, some records sound like to other – as is the case with this joyous romp which rightfully deserves the tag ‘classic’. And of course, this one is so much rarer on the black label U.S. issue copy..... And we still don’t know exactly who this guy is! C THE SEQUINS TRY MY LOVE THE DETROIT VG++ 600 SOUND 503 Not the Renfro group but a Detroit group about whom little to nothing is known with that typical heavyweight Motor City backing. Not a record that we’ve had since the nineties to be honest. 25% label tear on the flipside only. D HELEN MOORE THE RUN AROUND RENFRO 62167 M- 400 And talking of Renfro (see above item c) here is possibly the rarest record on the famed West Coast label (certainly one of them) and a disc that rarely crops up for sale. Added to which it is a top quality midtempo number. E DONI BURDICK BARI TRACK SOUND M- 750 IMPRESSION 6808 AUTOGRAPHED copy of one of Northern Soul’s greatest instrumentals – and let’s not under- rate a great version of ‘I Have Faith In You’ on the reverse side. F ROSE BATTISTE HIT AND RUN REVILOT 204 VG++ 200 WD And of course the flipside to this one, ‘I Miss My Baby’ is the vocal to the above ‘Bari Track’. Just a few light scuffs on this Detroit classic but it plays perfectly – just check the soundbite. G THE CONSTELLATIONS OH MARY VIOLET 1053 VG++ 200 Very rare R&B- fashioned pounder with gospel – styled vocalising was played as a cover-up in the eighties and has hardly ever turned up for sale since. One or two marks on the label but actually the vinyl itself is in better nick. H MOSES SMITH THE GIRL ACROSS THE DION 508 WD M- 150 STREET They don’t come much better than this one and the only way to get non-boot peace of mind is with the black and white promo. There is one second jump in the middle of this particular copy, it plays through every time but check the soundbite. A low start price therefore. I WILLIE AND HIS CAN’T LOVE NOBODY B&B 1007 VG+ 150 PEOPLE BUT YOU An out-of-leftfield midtempo beauty known to only a few and offered for sale only rarely on the jolly old internet in over 10 years. Wrap your ears around the soulfulness here and realise that there’s plenty of life left in these old soul records yet! J JIMMY McCRACKLIN WHATS THAT (PT 1) MERCURY 71747 M- 200 WD As far as I know this is our first-ever copy of this infectious R&B mover. The West Coast blues man’s only excursion onto what might be regarded as a major label met with complete and utter failure with the result that this is a scarce 45 indeed. K CLEETHORPES POSTER 200 Every now and then an item of ephemera crops up that is really worthy of notice – as is the case here with this ORIGINAL 1975 poster for the Cleethorpes Pier allnighters. It’s quite possible that you’ve never seen it before and we’ve never even seen a repro. It’s in great condition if slightly spoiled by one name on there (!). Poster is of proper poster size i.e. 30x20” , memorabilia is really hard to find. L PAUL THOMPSON SPECIAL KIND OF WOMAN VOLT 4042 M- 500 On vinyl! Didn’t think it existed – thought it was West Coast styrene only. But no, the regular Stax/Volt issue actually did happen, I thought it was promo-only on vinyl. Very rare, unknown- to-me in fact. M THE COMBINATIONS I’M GONNA MAKE YOU KIMTONE 1001 M- 1200 LOVE ME Nothing to do with the Chicago group but for sure the equal of their outings at least. Out of Atlanta but sounds like a midtempo item from Nre York or Chicago. We need hardly mention how scarce this one is. N THE AQUAMEN LINE AND TRACK HIBACK 109 WD M- 700 Get yourself a genuine original promo of this current dancefloor packer. Beware of this track on Hirich Music because it’s an ancient boot/reissue pressed for some kind of old and weird American demand. O SHARON McMANN GOT TO FIND ANOTHER GUY KAREN 803 M- 500 Very rare Detroit midtempo – only our second copy in 28 years of dealing. Obviously this is Sharon McMahon with the name spelled incorrectly but correctly as the songwriter. Little labels eh? SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 THE TRUE PAGES TRUTH AND LOVE CREATIVE M- 20 OF LIFE FUNK WD LIMITED EDITION white promo of this old Blackpool Mecca 1975 item spun from acetate and known from only a couple of those brittle platters. Tremendous midtempo item out of the burgeoning seventies New York Soul scene. Only 100 of these have been manufactured. 2 THE SHARPEES GO ON AND LAUGH C/W GET ONE-DER-FUL M- 12 IT TOGETHER Wow! The brilliant old ‘Just Bros’ acetate cut reveals it’s TRUE identity and what a gem it is – full of twists and turns with tremendous harmonies. The flipside is just as good featuring lead singer Vernon Guy on a careering solo effort which is typical of the Mar-V-Lus, One-Der-Ful, M- Pac label. 3 JONES & GASTON DO YOU GET THE MESSAGE CANNONBALL M- 25 LIMITED EDITION. Italian 45 of the original writer’s demo of the Grey Imprint rarity (Clear Hill) probably not just as good as the released effort but certainly worth owning. 4 STEVE MANCHA HE STOLE THE LOVE THAT GROOVESVILLE M- 10 WAS MINE LAST few copies of this Detroit gem we dug out of Don Davis’ United Sound Mastertapes some years ago – a fabulous midtempo track with all the right Michigan ingredients. 5 LINDA JONES YOU CAN’T TAKE IT C/W RECORD M- 8 LAST MINUTE MIRACLE SHACK FOUND ONLY on a rare and expensive French release outside of the ‘Hypnotized’ album – this is up there with Jones’ best Northern efforts i.e totally superb. Flipside, her version of the Shirelles goodie is only on 45 on this Austrian label. 6 BETTYE SWANN THE DANCE IS OVER BLUE KENT M- 20 LONG DELETED and fantastic mover from this wonderful singer backed with the other Brothers ‘Nobody But Me’, in itself a good sixties dancer. 7 RHETTA HUGHES CRY MYSELF TO SLEEP C/W RECORD M- 8 YOU’RE DOING WITH HER SHACK (WHEN IT SHOULD BE ME) TWO TREMENDOUS Jo Armstead – penned sides from Rhetta’s Tetragrammator album represent top quality late sixties midtempo/crossover in both instances. 8 MARY WELLS WHEN I’M GONE SOULTRIBE M- 8 ORIGINAL VERSION off the ‘Vintage Stock’ album is similar to Brenda Holloway’s and is a withdrawn Motown release. Possibly Brenda’s take would never have been issued otherwise. Backed with Linda Griver ‘Goodbye Cruel Love’. BRAND NEW MANIFESTO MAGAZINE! Hot off the press but – and here’s a deal – the previous manifesto (151) was delivered to ourselves very late. So – we can offer a 2-for-1 deal – both of the latest issues for the price of one, that’s £5 plus £1 postage. A veritable bargain, less than two pints of dirty beer. NORTHERN RARITIES 11 PERCY WIGGINS THAT’S LOVING YOU A-BET 9434 D M- 150 First issue promo copy. 12 THE WONDERLETTES I FEEL STRANGE RUBY 5065 M- 75 13 THE WONDERETTES HOW SOON BAJA 4506 M- 40 Great girl group Northern Soul. 14 BILLY JOE YOUNG I’VE GOT YOU ON MY MIND PAULA 240 WD M- 35 AGAIN 15 BABY I’M GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU COTILLION M- 50 WASHINGTON 44086 WD Simply fantastic – her best Northern cut by far in our opinion.

As founding members of “girl groups” who formed during the 1960s, they each created a sound and style that expanded the foundation set by forebears like the Shirelles, the Chantels, and the Bobbettes. The hits are legion. The groups are legendary. Hearing each woman tell her story, it’s clear that being in a group was often a springboard to reinvention, sometimes within the group itself, other times as a solo artist, and occasionally venturing into spheres beyond music. From opening the Motown Revue as Martha & the Vandellas to presiding on Detroit’s City Council, Martha Reeves embodies fearless strength and dedication. From being christened one of the “Sweethearts of the Apollo” as a member of Patti LaBelle & the Blubelles to becoming the very first Music Ambassador for Trenton, NJ, Sarah Dash is rich in soul and spirit.
