2007 CRUSH REPORT: ‘Just open your heart. Don’t be scared, and don’t give up.’ LINDA ERVIN on becoming a foster parent Grape Wanted: Foster Parents tonnage, prices both fall Mendocino County harvest down 14% compared to 2006 By BEN BROWN The Daily Journal The 2007 preliminary crush report released by the California Department of Food and Agriculture Friday shows the grape harvest is up slightly statewide, but in Mendocino County both production and average price per ton are down. According to the report, total production in Mendocino County was 60,962.4 tons, down 14 percent from 69,497.14 tons in 2006. Mendocino Agricultural Commission-er Dave Bengston said the drop in tonnage was largely due to the weather. Rainfall in Mendocino County in the winter of 2006 and spring of 2007 was below average. Parasites and disease also played a role, Bengston said. “We don’t like to go down 10,000 tons -- that’s a pretty big reduction,” Bengston said. When the total weight of grapes goes down, the hope is that the price of grapes will increase, he said.
