Welcome to our new Membership Coordinator, Jim Carozza, who had the gumption to run for office. We’d be nowhere without the dedication of our volunteers taking board positions, leading dives, greeting new members, folding newsletters and just making this an all around great place to be. I can’t thank you all nearly enough. FROM YOUR NEW MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR Jim Carozza Hello my name is Jim Carozza and I'm the newly elected Membership Director for the NEADC. I live North of Boston in Malden and work in Downtown Boston at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston as a Computer Analyst for the past 18 years. We're the big bank for all the other banks and the most often asked question I get all the time, "Do you get free samples?" No, We do not give out samples sorry! I have been a certified diver since 1978 after taking the course with my best friend who's father was one of the instructors at the YMCA in Melrose, MA. I also have my Advanced and Nitrox certifications along with several other specialty classes taken over the years. I have been a member of the NEADC for about 4 years now but had a bad skiing accident 3 years ago that required three operations on my left ankle that has slowed down my diving during this time frame. I'm healed the best it will ever be for now and finally purchased a DUI drysuit last year after having a wetsuit for these cold New England waters. I try to dive whenever I'm on vacation and have just returned from Morehead City, North Carolina with the Laurel Divers Dive Club from Pennsylvania. By the time this comes out I will also have gone to Bermuda and will report on my diving down there for the week of the fourth of July. I'm also running in case you missed it the August 3-6, 2001 trip to Morehead City for the NEADC and still have couple of openings left for anyone interested. This is some of the best wreck diving in the United States and the premier dive will be on the German sub U-352. A lot of people have been asking if this is only for Advanced divers or Nitrox certified divers. My answer is no on both but most dives are to 100 feet with calm waters (most of the time) and visibility up to 100 feet. Traveling this distance and only doing two boat dives a day made me go and get Nitrox certified two weeks before my trip last year to Morehead City. I took the class with United Divers in Somerville , MA and it was a one night class that required you to read the book ahead of time and a review of the Nitrox tables and a 20 question test at the end of the class. Total cost was around $90.00 but well worth it to almost double your bottom time on the wrecks. On my dives in June in Morehead we were able to watch the crew go in to set the anchor and tie us into the wreck almost all the way down to the bottom depth of 115 feet. Water temperature in August should be around 80 degrees. Please feel free to call or e-mail me at the numbers listed page 2, if you would like further information on this trip. I'm already in the process of booking next years trip to be combined with my friends from Laurel Divers on July 12-15, 2002.

Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. Nichols Professor of Communications Associate Dean for Graduates Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ABSTRACT Competition and diversity are touchstones in media policy, but the relationship between them is not clear despite a great number of studies because even studies dealing with their relationship, did not measure the intensity of competition. This paper investigates the relationship between market competition and program type diversity in the over-the-air television industry. Specifically, market competition is divided into intra-network competition and intra-media competition, i.e. terrestrial television vs. cable TV. Also this paper uses a comprehensive model of program types, with 281 program type categories, which have never been used in previous studies. The results show that program type diversity keeps decreasing over time and intra-network competition has a negative effect on program type diversity. Also, intra- network competition is a more important factor on program type diversity than inter- media competition.
