FROM THE PRESIDENT Maryhelen Shuman-Groh

There is so much going on that there is little time to report on all the activities and events! As we go to press we’re preparing the info packets for our upcoming FISH ID COURSE - thanks to Brandy Derickson for putting this together and to Jim Stewart for keeping NEADC involved in the Great American Fish Count. Ken Mulzet is working on a photo contest and art exhibit for the October anniversary party. Please get in touch if you’d like to enter or exhibit your work. Watch for the new line of long awaited NEADC logo wear to be introduced soon. If you have suggestions for NEADC items you’d like to see (and would actually BUY) please get in touch with Caroline Starita and/or Al Bozza. Bryce Flynn has been doing a great job on the website and the latest news and announcements can be found at www.NEADC.org - check it out! Welcome to our new Membership Coordinator, Jim Carozza, who had the gumption to run for office. We’d be nowhere without the dedication of our volunteers taking board positions, leading dives, greeting new members, folding newsletters and just making this an all around great place to be. I can’t thank you all nearly enough.

FROM YOUR NEW MEMBERSHIP COORDINATOR Jim Carozza

Hello my name is Jim Carozza and I'm the newly elected Membership Director for the NEADC. I live North of Boston in Malden and work in Downtown Boston at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston as a Computer Analyst for the past 18 years. We're the big bank for all the other banks and the most often asked question I get all the time, "Do you get free samples?" No, We do not give out samples sorry! I have been a certified diver since 1978 after taking the course with my best friend who's father was one of the instructors at the YMCA in Melrose, MA. I also have my Advanced and Nitrox certifications along with several other specialty classes taken over the years. I have been a member of the NEADC for about 4 years now but had a bad skiing accident 3 years ago that required three operations on my left ankle that has slowed down my diving during this time frame. I'm healed the best it will ever be for now and finally purchased a DUI drysuit last year after having a wetsuit for these cold New England waters. I try to dive whenever I'm on vacation and have just returned from Morehead City, North Carolina with the Laurel Divers Dive Club from . By the time this comes out I will also have gone to Bermuda and will report on my diving down there for the week of the fourth of July. I'm also running in case you missed it the August 3-6, 2001 trip to Morehead City for the NEADC and still have couple of openings left for anyone interested. This is some of the best wreck diving in the and the premier dive will be on the German sub U-352. A lot of people have been asking if this is only for Advanced divers or Nitrox certified divers. My answer is no on both but most dives are to 100 feet with calm waters (most of the time) and visibility up to 100 feet. Traveling this distance and only doing two boat dives a day made me go and get Nitrox certified two weeks before my trip last year to Morehead City. I took the class with United Divers in Somerville , MA and it was a one night class that required you to read the book ahead of time and a review of the Nitrox tables and a 20 question test at the end of the class. Total cost was around $90.00 but well worth it to almost double your bottom time on the wrecks. On my dives in June in Morehead we were able to watch the crew go in to set the anchor and tie us into the wreck almost all the way down to the bottom depth of 115 feet. Water temperature in August should be around 80 degrees. Please feel free to call or e-mail me at the numbers listed page 2, if you would like further information on this trip. I'm already in the process of booking next years trip to be combined with my friends from Laurel Divers on July 12-15, 2002. Now for the reason I volunteered for this position. Ken Mulzet put a gun to my head. No only kidding folks!! The reason I ran was because have you ever come to your first meeting of a new club or group and sit way in the back of the room to see what it's all about? Well that was me 4 years or so ago and now I get to meet and greet all the new and prospective club members at every meeting. The NEADC is a great organization and does lots of wonderful things in and around the diving community so give it a try and attend some of the events and diving we have to offer. As the new Membership Director I'm looking for more involvement between the new members and the club. I know I've met a lot of great members since joining and besides where else can you get a free chance to dive in the G.O.T every month just for coming to the meetings. I know I've been trying to win that since joining and still trying and trying and trying… I look forward to meeting all the new members and want to wish everyone a great summer of diving. Remember, Dive safe and dive often

FROM YOUR SHORE DIVE COORDINATOR Ken Mulzet

Happy summer everyone! The dive season is officially upon us and I hope everyone is taking full advantage of it. I will be leading a dive at Nubbell Light on July 15 and there is plenty of other activity going on within the club. Don't forget about the photo contest - get out there and take plenty of pictures. I am also going to be organizing a pictorial exhibit for the 25th anniversary banquet. So anyone that has some underwater pictures they would like displayed or any old pictures of club activities over the years, dust them off and bring them to the next meeting. I will be sure to note the contributor and return them after the banquet. Happy diving!

FROM YOUR PROGRAM DIRECTOR AL BOZZA

Silver Banks February 9-16, 2002 SHARK DIVES -- snorkel or dive with sharks in New see write-up in newsletter and see slides at next meeting England water. This is our fifth year with Charlie Donilon's shark cage diving adventures. Come and swim with one of the Little Bahama Bank May 12-18, 2002 most fascinating creatures on earth. Sept 2nd and Oct 5th . wild dolphin encounters Photos will be available at the July meeting

______SILVER BANKS FEBRUARY 9-16,2002 SWIM WITH HUMPBACK WHALES!!! Have you ever wanted to snorkel with a whale? Take it from someone who has done it--swimming with whales is AWESOME !!! Imagine being eye to eye with a fifty foot long animal in the water. Now is your chance to fulfill your dreams and be the envy of everyone who knows you. Best of all, you won't have to tell them how cheap it was.... We have reserved 10 spots aboard the "Bottom Time Two" for the week of February 9-16, 2002, to photograph Humpbacks in an area of the Caribbean called the Silver Banks. The Silver Banks (under the legal jurisdiction of the Dominican Republic) is one of the only places in the world where swimming with the Humpbacks is legal. The Silver Banks is a calving area where hundreds of whales migrate in the winter to give birth and mate. There are a LOT of whales there in the winter. All interaction is done with a snorkel, not scuba. The encounters can get close enough to touch the whales, but touching is discouraged. Bring a wide angle lens. Also, whales are known for breaching at this time of year. You can get some great topside pictures too. Jonathan will be available to assist with some great advice for capturing pictures you never thought you were capable of taking (see my photos of sperm whales at the next meeting) The "Bottom Time Two" is by far the best boat that visits the Silver Banks because it is a large catamaran hulled vessel, the most stable platform for this kind of diving. They moor the boat in an area which is moderately protected from waves. This is also a boat which is registered in the U.S. and has a U.S. crew and captain. It is U.S. Coast Guard inspected, and provisioned in the U.S.. It makes only four trips to the Silver Banks per season. You will fly to the Dominican Republic and board the boat there. Total cost for the trip, including entry fees and duties, is $2,155.00. This includes all meals, nonalcoholic drinks, etc. You must book your own flight. This is a very reasonable price for any liveaboard, but especially for this kind of activity. There are 7 slots available as this goes to press. A $300.00 deposit is needed to hold your spot. For questions, contact Al Bozza by phone (508) 384-1377 or by email [email protected]

THE GREAT AMERICAN FISH COUNT (GAFC)

The Great American Fish Count (GAFC) was started in 1992 by Dr. Gary Davis at the Channel Islands National Park (CINP) as a way to encourage sport divers to report fish sightings. Fifty divers participated in the first GAFC off Anacapa Island. The primary goals of the GAFC are to: 1) Raise public awareness about trends in fish populations, 2) Provide information on fish populations, 3) Provide a sustainable non extractive diving activity, and 4) Improve fish population assessment techniques. The event is focused around a discrete time frame in July in order to get as many divers as possible involved. The hope is to have divers become interested enough in fish monitoring to map and adopt sites that can then be visited year-round. The GAFC is open to everyone who has a basic certification and wants to learn some fish ID and fish surveying techniques. Divers are encouraged to take a fish ID course such as the one offered by NEADC on July 7th but this is not required. This year NEADC is conducting it's fourth New England GAFC and for the first time will have scan sheets and other material from REEF.org and from Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNM). Reference copies of "Marine Life of the North Atlantic" by Andrew J. Martinez will also be available at the dive sites.

The following counts are currently scheduled. July 1st, Brant Rock, contact Bob Michelson at (781) 848-8870 or [email protected] July 8th, Folly Cove, contact Jim Stewart at (978) 363-5348 or [email protected] July 15th, Magnolia Rock, contact Jim Stewart at (978) 363-5348 or [email protected] Please call or email the contact for more information.

SOME OF THE WRECKS: The U-352 - A German Submarine (VII-C Class) 218 feet long was sunk April 9, 1942 by the United States Coast Guard Cutter "ICARUS". This vessel is possibly the most intact and unique wreck in this area. This is the signature dive in the Morehead City area. The maximum depth of the dive is 110 feet. The PAPOOSE - An American Tanker 412 ft. in length was torpedoed & sunk on March 3, 1942 by the German Submarine U-124 Vessel is intact & upside down with the hull rising approx. 30 ft. off the bottom. This wreck is a breeding ground for Atlantic Sand Tiger Sharks. Depth of dive is approx. 125 ft. The SHURTZ - A WW1 German Cruiser 225 ft. in length was captured & repatriated by the U.S. at the outbreak off the war On June 21, 1918 it sunk after colliding with the S.S. FLORIDA. Time has taken a heavy toll on this vessel. The deck cannons, boilers & engines are the remaining structures visible making this an excellent dive. Many artifacts are still being recovered. This is one of the prettiest dives South of Cape Lookout! Depth of dive is approx. 110 ft. Please review my article from last years trip on the NEADC web site: www.NEADC.org “Dive Article Archives” “Graveyard Of The Atlantic: Morehead City, North Carolina” – JIM CAROZZA IF INTERESTED PLEASE SEE OR E-MAIL EITHER KEN MULZET [email protected] OR JIM CAROZZA [email protected] FOR MORE INFO.

EASTPORT MAINE As many of you know, Christine and I have a house in Eastport, right on the water. We have the place set up for diving, with an outdoor shower, dip tanks, etc. We have an outstanding shore dive right across the street where we have a pair of somewhat tame Atlantic Wolffish, thousands of Northern Red (Tealia) anemones, arctic soft coral, and a host of other things that are either rare or nonexistent down here in Massachusetts. Eastport is such a great place that the New England Aquarium runs collecting trips there twice a year to get goodies for their exhibits. There are large nudibranchs all year around (not just in the spring) as well as Spiny sunstars and all kinds of cool stuff. Macro photographers will have a field day. Most of the macro photography in my book is from Eastport. I'm running a long weekend dive trip to Eastport. People who join me will stay in the house and we'll do local shore dives. I know all the good spots, including a sheer vertical wall that is 200 feet deep and looks like Grand Cayman (but colder!) and a very awesome dive site on the other side of the bay in Canada. I have three available bedrooms, so we can take 6 people. I'm charging $160 per person for the trip, which includes lodging, breakfast, and air fills. The diving will be on Friday-Sunday August 24-26. You may arrive Thursday night or Friday morning, and leave either Sunday night or Monday morning. So, you can get up to 4 nights in Eastport. We will dine out for dinner. Eastport has some very good and cheap restaurants. The diving in Eastport is done in accordance with the tide tables. The first dive Friday morning would be about 9:30 AM, so if you want to make the dive, you would need to arrive Thursday night. We will get two dives a day, so that will be 6 dives plus night dives if you want to do them. If you want to ask some opinions on the diving from people in the club, talk to: Ralph and Miriam Cohn, Julia Cichowski, Don Eva, Al and Wendy Bozza. If you want to check out the house, I have a website up: http://www.geocities.com/eastporthouse. If you want to go, I will need to collect a $50.00 deposit. First come first served! I wish I could take more people, but I'm limited by bedrooms and bathrooms!! Looking forward to having you. Best, Jonathan Bird P.S. If anyone has been watching Fox, the show "Murder in Small Town X" that starts on July 17th was filmed this spring in Eastport.
