BOOK REVIEWS THE JEWS IN THE GREEK AGE. By Elias J. Bickerman. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University, 1988. Pp. xiii + 338. $30. The late Professor Bickerman (1897-1981) was recognized as a leading authority not only in the study of Hellenism but also in the particular area of Hellenistic Judaism. His most famous books were Der Gott der Makkabàer (1937; English, 1979) and Institutions des Séleucides (1938). His technical articles have been gathered in the three-volume collection Studies in Jewish and Christian History (1976, 1980, 1986). He was widely admired for his mastery of the primary sources pertaining to the Hellenistic era and for his breadth of learning. He was indeed a scholar's scholar. In his latter years he served as professor of ancient history at Columbia University in New York and research fellow at Jewish Theo logical Seminary of America. Although B. had completed the first draft of this survey of pre- Maccabean Judaism in 1963, he was revising his manuscript until shortly before his death. His manuscript has been prepared for publication by Shari Friedman, a member of the Jewish Theological Seminary research staff. Albert Baumgarten, professor of Jewish history at Bar-Ilan Uni versity, assisted with the final preparation and compiled a 15-page general bibliography. The theme of the volume is stability and change in Jewish society during the first centuries of the Greek age, from the fourth century B.C. until approximately 175 B.C. The first part ("before and after Alex ander") surveys the evidence for the early encounters between Jews and Greeks in the land of Israel and the Diaspora. -

Patrology’s message is to be sure of the authenticity of these acts scientifically, publishing them and translating them in modern languages. 3) More importantly is the discovery of the thoughts of the Fathers, their dogma, doctrines and concepts concerning God, man, church, salvation, worship, creation, the body, the heavenly life, etc. Patrology is the door through which we can enter into the church and attain her spirit, which affects our inner life, conduct and behavior. Through Patrology, the acts of the Fathers are transferred into living thoughts and concepts which are based on a sound foundation, without ignoring the world around us. -

In the domain of Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles, the chief event has without doubt been the publication of Dr Carl Schmidt's long looked-for edition of the Coptic Ada PaIIl; j this, however, has been sufficiently dealt with in previous numbers of the JOURNAL. There is, therefore, here need only to note that Corssen has challenged practically every item of the structure erected by Schmidt on the Coptic fragments t, and that the Bollandist reviewer adopts a position of extreme reserve in regard to the whole question '. -

Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

The Driving Forces Behind Foxe’s Book of Martyrs Thesis We assert that Foxe’s Book of Martyrs was published for these purposes: personal reasons, a tribute to Queen Elizabeth, and to gain support for the Protestant faith and belief. A Tribute to Queen Elizabeth In 1553, Foxe and his wife fled to Europe when Queen Mary took the throne of England.2 Some of Foxe’s friends that stayed in England were arrested and eventually burned. While in Europe, he became friends with other scholars who encouraged him to continue with his Book of Martyrs. Foxe returned to England in 1559 after Queen Elizabeth came to the throne because she seemed to be a more tolerant monarch than Queen Mary.2 Foxe published Foxe’s Book of Martyrs in Latin 1559 and was based largely off of history books and the deaths that could be found in them—in 1563 he published his first English edition. Foxe travelled John Foxe’s Background around England freely under the reign of Queen Elizabeth, gathering witness accounts, letters, and official records John Foxe was born in 1517 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England.
