COMPETITION GOES ON DESPITE THE CONDITIONS Three nights before this month’s handicap Canberra was hit with a brief but violent rain-storm. A couple of days later John Hunt wandered across the Masson Street throwing field and was surprised to see the quantity of water still lying on its surface, particularly in the shot put sector. He informed several “regulars” and encouraged them to arrive early with tools and buckets to drain the most affected areas. Thanks to John and his helpers we were able to run the shot put competition in wet, but manageable conditions. Since last month five of our regulars have enjoyed a little time away from Canberra’s winter. Mary Wahren had been flitting about northern Australia using up many thousands of “Frequent Flier” points, Phil Toomey spent two weeks in the Northern Territory with work and Bryan and Trish Thomas celebrated their birthdays on the Gold Coast. An open letter to ACT Veterans from John Hunt. Dear Vets I love veterans’ athletics; it is one of the most important things in my life. I love the fellowship, the sense of health and well-being and the thrill of competition. I hope to participate in our great sport for the rest of my life. But in the past few weeks that dream has been threatened. It started when I read in the President’s Message for the July Vetrunner that a proposal to develop a new sporting facility at the Deakin Playing Fields (near the Mint) had been supported by the ACT (Athletics) Council at a meeting with the ACT Department of Sport and Recreation and representatives of four other sporting bodies (the ACT Women’s Soccer Association, the of possible future use of a multi-sport facility. athletes will pay to train there on the ACT Touch Association, ACT Table Tennis This information provided the basis for remaining five days each week, that every and South Canberra Netball). estimated income flows should such a facility ACT little athletics carnival and every ACT [I should point out that the ACT Athletics be constructed by the ACT Government. schools athletics carnival will be held at Council includes ACT Athletics (the inter-club The consultants prepared a detailed report Deakin, and that Australian Championships body), the ACT School Sports Association, of over 160 pages, which included estimated and Grand Prix Events will be held there every which conducts annual athletics carnivals, our development costs of $27.613,000. This is one of our enduring, popular and fun events. Seven teams of four competed valiantly for great trophies and prizes (I understand Maria White, acquired these trophies at great expense from the well known and respected trophy supplier – Clints). There were prizes for other bowling specific talents, such as most unusual style and lowest scores. The highly sought after prizes for these were just out of this world – Mars bars! Yours truly had the good sense to team up with the highly competitive running handicapper, and closet-bowling addicts, Joan and Al Mallory (they have their own shoes and balls) and needless to say I was part of one of the winning teams. It is amazing how many points three people can make and still win. Watch for the next episode in our bowling saga when we next go bowling at the International Bowl in Tuggeranong. This is where the Commonwealth gold winning Gail Honeyman trains. The July dinner will be held at O’Reilly’s in Civic on Wednesday 26 July at 7pm and promises to be a very lively evening.
