  • 1: for Me, It Was Personal Names with Too Many of the Letter "Q"
1: For me, it was personal names with too many of the letter "q", "z", or "x". With apostrophes. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate).

  • Bestiary of the Realms: Volume 2
Bestiary of the Realms: Volume 2 by Thomas M. Costa and Eric L. Boyd Art by Noëlle Triaureau Editorial assistance from Joe “Warlockco” Weber A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS Welcome to volume two of the Bestiary of the Realms. As this is our second volume, you’ll find several score new or converted monsters, as well as a few different interpretations of monsters that have already been converted. A word of caution, just as many official 3E and 3.5E monsters did not slavishly follow earlier write-ups of those monsters, neither do the monsters herein. Instead, we did our best to consider all sources, hopefully make full and creative use of the 3.5E rules (including non-core WotC books), and in many cases add a little bit here and there to many of the monsters, even if it was in only adding or updating their Realms lore. A few have even been renamed. One last note, we’ve done our best to include source references for all things where appropriate, except those found in the three core rulebooks or Expanded Psionics Handbook. Until then, Sword High! – Thomas M. Costa and Eric L. Boyd ABOUT THE AUTHORS Thomas M. Costa is a senior analyst with the Government Accountability Office. He has been a contributor to several Wizards of the Coast products including Demihuman Deities and Races of Faerûn, and is the author of several Dragon Magazine and Wizards of the Coast website articles. • The Lost Kenku
THE LOST KENKU Illustrated and Written By Shawn Wood Note from the Author o say this is a loosely constructed adventure may be an exaggeration of some degree. However, some patron saint of children requested a pdf of my adventure notes. So, here we are. I’ve use one version or another of this adventure to introduce people to the D&D experi- ence as it has all the elements of a good game with very little ramp up time needed. The adventure structure is created in such a way to allow for as much or as little combat is desired. Encounters can be changed to suit a lvl1 cam- paign, and with a little imagination I imagine one could have fun altering it for a party in the high teens. Some nice paintings of Ancient Dragons and Neoliths may be in order. Have fun with it. Change, add, or remove monsters, items, and characters as you see fit. A special thanks to the wonderful donors of the Extra Life Charity and the Dungeons and Dragons Team. Together we can manage to do a little bit of good in this mind-flayer-run world. 2 | THE LOST KENKU | A 2017 EXTRA LIFE ADVENTURE Wizard of Weirding Mind Flayer Alhoon The Wizard Weirding is a mind flayer alhoon in dis- guise. It uses disguise self to appear as a male human wizard named Weirding. Long ago, it left the hive in search of power and immortality through magic. Guide to the Spheres An "official" Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres [revised 1.0] By Paul Westermeyer aka GMWestermeyer Table of Contents: Page Section 1 Introduction 2 Phlogiston Navigation 4 Phlogiston Transit Times 4 Where is the Rock of Bral? 6 “Official” Flow Map 7 The Spheres and other Phlogiston Locations 23 ‘Loose’ Planets/Worlds 34 Bibliography: Introduction Spelljammer is a very unique and creative setting, but it is also one of the worst organized settings TSR produced with material is scattered among many different products. This makes it very difficult to find what you are looking for, a problem exasperated by Spelljammer’s status as a ‘connection’ campaign, designed (like Planescape) to connect the ‘big’ three settings, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Dragonlance. I’ve been working to alleviate this problem by writing guides and indices for those aspects of Spelljammer that are most important for creating a coherent, rational game setting. The first of these guides was An “Official” Spelljammer Timeline, which collated Spelljammer-related historical mentions in published TSR products into a cohesive, coherent timeline that Spelljammer (or Hackjammer) gamemasters could use as the foundation of their own, personalized campaigns. This guide, An “Official” Spelljammer Guide to the Spheres, has a similar purpose. Spelljammer’s iconic center is the Rock of Bral, just as Sigil is the iconic heart of Planescape, Spelljammer’s setting cousin, but Sigil’s location is quite firmly placed at the center of the Plane of Concordant Opposition, metaphorically the heart of the entire Advanced Dungeons and Dragons multiverse. Moreover, the various inner and outer planes are all well mapped in relation to each other, and have been ever since the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Player’s Handbook in 1978.

  • The Grand Duchy of Karameikos Players Guide V1.0
The Grand Duchy of Karameikos Players Guide v1.0 Overview This player guide is intended to give you, the player, an overview of the new world you will be exploring – Mystara and more specifically the Grand Duchy of Karameikos, the country that will be your starting area. It will give you some background for your characters and some modifications and limitations to the choices you can make at character creation based upon this campaign starting in the Grand Duchy of Karameikos. As you explore the lands of Karameikos & the rest of Mystara, discover its secrets and meet new races and cultures more options will open for you as players. History This is the land's history as known to the peoples of Karameikos. The first part of the history is recorded in an epic work of poetry of the Traldar (Traladara) people, "The Song of King Halav." This is an ancient work maintained by generations of bards before finally being committed to writing about six centuries ago. The Song of King Halav In ancient times, the land now called Karameikos was the forest homeland of the Traldar, men and women so favoured by the Immortals and allowed to live in these beautiful lands. The Immortals let the Traldar live happy, simple lives. The Traldar fished and hunted; the men spent most of their time sporting with one another and offering praise to the Immortals. But the Immortals knew that the happiness of the Traldar was to end. Far to the west, a race of evil beast-men was preparing to march through the easterly lands in search of booty, prisoners and more hospitable homelands.

22 TIGHTBEAM Those multiple points of connection—and favorites—indicate the show’s position of preference in popular culture, and Tennant said he’s consistently surprised by how Doctor Who fandom and awareness has spread internationally—despite its British beginnings. “Doctor Who is part of the cultural furniture in the UK,” he said. “It’s something that’s uniquely British, that Britain is proud of, and that the British are fascinated by.” Now, when Tennant is recognized in public, he can determine how much a fan of the show the person is based on what they say to him. “If someone says, ‘Allons-y!’ chances are they’re a fan,” he said. Most people say something like, “Where’s your Tardis?” or “Aren’t you going to fix that with your sonic screwdriver?” There might be one thing that all fans can agree on. Perhaps—as Tennant quipped—Doctor Who Day, Nov. 23 (which marks the airing of the first episode, “An Unearthly Child”) should be a national holiday. Regardless of what nation—or planet—you call home.
