Photo: Sven Kristen- son’s archive, LUB. Till mamma och pappa Acknowledgements It is a surreal feeling when something that you have worked hard on materi- alizes in your hand. This is not to say that I am suddenly a believer in the inherent agency of things, rather that the book before you is special to me because it represents a crucial phase of my life. Many people have contrib- uted to making these years exciting and challenging. After all – as I continu- ously emphasize over the next 350 pages – archaeological knowledge pro- duction is a collective affair. My first heartfelt thanks go to my supervisor Anders Andrén whose profound knowledge of cultural history and excellent creative ability to connect the dots has guided me through this process. Thank you, Anders, for letting me explore and for showing me the path when I got lost. My next thanks go to my second supervisor Arto Penttinen who encouraged me to pursue a Ph.D. and who has graciously shared his knowledge and experiences from the winding roads of classical archaeology. Thank you, Arto, for believing in me and for critically reviewing my work. -
MAGNETISM: PRINCIPLES and HISTORY Magnetism 1 Magnetism
MAGNETISM: PRINCIPLES AND HISTORY Magnetism 1 Magnetism: Principles, History, Modern Applications and Future Speculations Jorey Dixon Ashley Hyde Aliza Jensen Clint Wilkinson Salt Lake Community College, Physics Department, PHYSCSC 1010, Elementary Physics Magnetism 2 Abstract Magnetism permeates every aspect of our lives. Man’s curiosity and desire to understand the world around him has led to significant discoveries throughout history. Magnetism was believed to have been discovered as early as 600 B.C., but even to this day we have yet to fully understand the power and complexity of the magnetic field. We acknowledge our current understanding of magnetics by developing applications to improve our lives, such as computers, transportation, and medical procedures, and energy generation to power them all. As our understanding of magnetism evolves, so too will the ways in which we apply it. The future of military technology, transportation, computers, and medicine may well lie in the field of magnetics. Keywords: Magnetism, magnets, magnetic poles Magnetism 3 Magnetism: Principals, History, Modern Applications and Future Speculations Introduction One of the earliest uses of magnets was in 121 AD when the Chinese designed a simple compass by suspending a metal rod. Since then, the applications of magnets has progressed tremendously. Magnets are currently on the front line of modern technology and as time goes by, it is apparent that magnets have the potential to power some of the greatest tools of modern society. History 600 b.c: Lodestone The history of magnetism started in the early 600 BC with the discovery of loadstone. The most popular legend accounting for the discovery of magnets is that of an elderly shepherd named Magnes. -

Secret Teachings of All Ages Index
THE SECRET TEACHINGS OF ALL AGES by Manly P. Hall [1928, copyright not renewed] Contents Start Reading For once, a book which really lives up to its title. Hall self-published this massive tome in 1928, consisting of about 200 legal-sized pages in 8 point type; it is literally his magnum opus. Each of the nearly 50 chapters is so dense with information that it is the equivalent of an entire short book. If you read this book in its entirety you will be in a good position to dive into subjects such as the Qabbala, Alchemy, Tarot, Ceremonial Magic, Neo-Platonic Philosophy, Mystery Religions, and the theory of Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry. Although there are some questionable and controversial parts of the book, such as the outdated material on Islam, the portion on the Bacon-Shakespeare hypothesis, and Hall's conspiracy theory of history as driven by an elite cabal of roving immortals, they are far out-weighed by the comprehensive information here on other subjects. For many years this book was only available in a large format edition which was hard to obtain and very expensive. However, an affordable paperback version has finally been released (see sidebar). PRODUCTION NOTES: I worked on this huge project episodically from 2001 to June 2004. This because of the poor OCR quality, which was due to the miniscule type and large blocks of italics; this necessitated retyping many parts of the text manually. To give an idea of how massive this project was, the proof file for this is 2 megabytes, about 8 times the size of a normal 200 page book.
