MARUMAKKATHAYAM MARRIAGE COMMISSION. ANSWERS TO INTERROGATORIES BY M. R RY. K. R. KRISHNA MENON, AVARGAL, RETIRED SUB-JUDGE, WALLUVANAD TALUK. 1. Amongst Nayars and other high caste people, a man of the higher divi sion can have Sambandham with a woman of a lower division. 2, 3, 4 and 5. According to the original institutes of Malabar, Nayars are divided into 18 sects, between whom, except in the last 2, intermarriage was per missible ; and this custom is still found to exist, to a certain extent, both in Travan core and Cochin, This rule has however been varied by custom in British Mala bar, in Avhich a woman of a higher sect is not now permitted to form Sambandham with a man of a lower one. This however will not justify her total excommuni cation from her caste in a religious point of view, but will subject her to some social disabilities, which can be removed by her abandoning the sambandham, and paying a certain fine to the Enangans, or caste-people. The disabilities are the non-invitation of her to feasts and other social gatherings. But she cannot be prevented from entering the pagoda, from bathing in the tank, or touch ing the well &c. A Sambandham originally bad, cannot be validated by a Prayaschitham. In fact, Prayaschitham implies the expiation of sin, which can be incurred only by the violation of a religious rule. Here the rule violated is purely a social one, and not a religious one, and consequently Prayaschitham is altogether out of the place. The restriction is purely the creature of class pride, and this has been carried to such an extent as to pre vent the Sambandham of a woman with a man of her own class, among certain aristocratic families.

Answer the questions in the OMR Sheet by shading the appropriate bubble. 3. Shade the bubbles with black ball point pen. 4. Each question carries four marks. One mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. 5. Use the space provided in the last page for rough work. Read the passage and answer the questions from 1 to 4. For many years, the continent Africa remained unexplored and unknown. The main reason was the inaccessibility to its interior region due to dense forests, wild life, savage tribals, de- serts and barren solid hills. Many people who tried to explore the land could not survive the dangers. David Livingstone is among those brave few who not only explored part of Africa but also lived among the tribals bringing them near to Social Milieu. While others explored with the idea of expanding their respective empires. Livingstone did so to explore its vast and mysteri- ous hinterland, rivers and lakes. He was primarily a religious man and a medical practitioner who tried to help mankind with it. Livingstone was born in Scotland and was educated to become a doctor and priest. His exploration started at the beginning of the year 1852. He ex- plored an unknown river in Western Luanda. However, he was reduced to a skeleton during four years of travelling. By this time, he had become famous and when he returned to England for convalescing, entire London along with Queen Victoria turned to welcome him.

Tel: 01928 718834 Chester Diocesan Board of Finance is a company limited by guarantee registered in England (no. 7826) Registered charity (no. 248968) Foreword I’ll never forget, after a long walk with my Dad, in Pendle, Lancashire, sipping a pint in a pub and chatting to the locals. Five minutes later I was surprised to turn to see my Dad placing his arthritic hand into the dirty palms of a particularly burly local farmer as they bowed their heads in prayer. I didn’t quite know where to look or what to do, so I lowered my head and kept quiet. It seemed like the right thing to do, and it helped me avoid the gaze of the growing number of amused boozy onlookers. That was my first and slightly embarrassing introduction to prayer. Since then I’ve travelled a long way, but I still remember the first tentative steps I took for myself. I also remember just how uncomfortable and alien praying felt to me. For those well versed in the lifelong discipline of prayer, it can perhaps be easy to forget just how strange the whole thing can be to start. I am grateful to one good colleague from many years ago who shared with me the William Temple quote: ‘When I pray, coincidences happen, when I don’t they don’t.’ As you pray during this period, please pray for those who are just starting and giving it a go.
