Kristian Matsson, is not a circus sideshow act. Nor is he actually the VIDEO tallest man on earth. The average-height, Swedish-born Matsson is an Indie folk singer/songwriter whose size escalates with the brilliance of his music and mesmerizing stage presence. In tandem with the release of his fourth full-length album, “Dark Bird is Home,” on May 12, Mattson brings his world tour to Boston’s Orpheum Theatre. This will be Matsson’s first time touring with a full band. A 21st-century folk troubadour, Matsson resembles a young John Mellencamp in appearance, but has gritty vocals reminiscent of Bob Dylan. He has, on many occasions, been likened to Dylan in terms of his songwriting ability and vocal style. Classically trained on guitar as a child, Matsson didn’t experiment with his own style until he was in high school. He created his personal brand by combining fingerpicking guitar work with poetic, moody and evocative lyrics. There’s a simple SHARE elegance to his folk tunes and an “Everyman” appeal. Video: Boston Marathon Movie Trailer Part of Matsson’s originality is due to a talent that few artists have. The synergy between his voice SUBSCRIBE and the guitar is so strong that he rarely needs to record vocals and instruments separately. The 1 of 3 4/14/15, 9:03 PM Concert Preview: The Tallest Man on Earth | Boston Magazine http://www.bostonmagazine.com/sponsor-content/concert-preview-th... voice-guitar connection is also evident on stage when he tiptoes, stops, stares and reflects, all the Subscribe Now while continuing the intricate finger work that reflects his technical training. Give a Gift For someone with a classical background and brooding music, as well as ordinary height (perhaps Customer Service short, by Swedish standards), the moniker “The Tallest Man on Earth” may seem like a bit of a misnomer. It was actually something Matsson chose randomly when he needed a stage name. At the Table of Contents time (2006), he was a member of the Swedish garage rock band The Montezumas and did his songwriting on the side. Matsson went solo that year with a self-titled début album. The Tallest Man on Earth’s fame has been growing ever since. “Shallow Grave,” Matsson’s first full-length album, was released in 2008 and earned accolades from NPR (National Public Radio) and Pitchfork Media, producers of the annual Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. “The Wild Hunt,” his second album — and first on the Dead Oceans label — was number 38 on the Swedish music charts in 2010. By 2012, Matsson’s “There’s No Leaving Now” hit number 14 in Sweden and number 34 in the United States. “Dark Bird is Home,” Matsson’s newest endeavor, is comprised of songs and sounds from various countries, studios and barns, and pays homage to the artist’s rural roots. “Sagres,” the new single from the album, presents Matsson at his most personal and direct. He sings, “It’s not the sting of cities flickering in life, no // It’s not me knowing there’s a deeper in the dust, no // It’s not the reasoning with shadows that are gone, no // It’s not me knowing I’m yet to see the fire. // It’s just all this doubt.” There’s no doubt that this master wordsmith and innovative musician’s height as an artist is rising among an ever-increasing fan base. The Tallest Man on Earth At the Orpheum Theatre Boston, MA Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 7:30 pm Tickets are $35.00 and $45.00 at Ticketmaster.com, by phone at (800) 745 – 3000 or at the venue box office. Volume 80, Issue 5 Smithfield, RI October 19, 2012 Inside Bulldogs take first gridiron win With families’ support, Bryant succeeds in 38-35 victory this By Chad Sabo Staff Writer When everyone steps up on a team, you know edition it is going to be a good day. Bryant University Quarterback Mike Westerhaus had the best game of his career, throwing a record breaking 350 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday Afternoon. Westerhaus wasn’t the only offensive leader for the Bulldogs, Jordan Harris and Jordan Brown both stepped up Business: and played fantastic football to lead our Bryant Struggles for Bulldogs to victory. Jordan Harris not only led the team in receiving yards with 201, but he also tied Zynga games Matt Tracey for the program record with 19-career touchdown receptions. Jordan Brown had one of his better games this year, as he led the team in rushing yards Saturday with 131. With this victory, the Bulldogs snapped a program-record seven-game losing streak and extended its unbeaten streak over Robert Morris to five. Clearly the offense played out of their minds against Robert Morris, recording 497 total yards on offense, and their 38 points was the highest for the season. The most important statistic of the day was the fourth down efficiency our Bulldogs had. Jordan Harris stands with confidence as his team takes the win. Page 7 They were 2 out of 3 on fourth down conversions compared to Robert Morris who didn’t attempt a (Bryant Athletics) fourth down conversion.

  • The Tallest Man on Earth the Wild Hunt
THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH THE WILD HUNT The Wild Hunt When fans lined up to see the sold-out Bon Iver performances at New York City’s Town Hall in late Burden of Tomorrow 2008, few of them went with any expectations of the opening act. But the audience that night, and on Troubles Will be Gone every other night of Bon Iver’s tour that December, were introduced to something special, something You’re Going Back unforgettable: The Tallest Man on Earth . This was the first of several tours for the Tallest Man on The Drying of the Lawns Earth (aka Kristian Matsson), with obsessive crowds growing each step of the way. King of Spain Love is All Earlier in the year, The Tallest Man on Earth had released one of 2008’s most powerful records, one Thousand Ways that Pitchfork praised, calling Matsson “a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting.” A Lion's Heart Shallow Grave could not have been more simple, just Matsson’s commanding vocals with an acoustic Kids on the Run guitar or banjo, recorded at his home in Dalarna, Sweden. Although the album was released on the Swedish label Gravitation without the help of widespread distribution, the story of The Tallest Man on Earth spread far and wide through word of mouth. It is impossible to discuss The Tallest Man on Earth’s music without acknowledging Bob Dylan . The seemingly effortlessness, the melodic sensibility and the deft lyricism all recall Dylan’s early years. But CATALOG #: DOC040 when you witness the Tallest Man on Earth perform live, you are watching a man possessed.

  • May 12, 2015 for Immediate Release the TALLEST MAN on EARTH
May 12, 2015 For Immediate Release THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH EXTENDS SPRING NORTH AMERICAN TOUR INTO SUMMER; DARK BIRD IS HOME OUT TODAY ON DEAD OCEANS “It is his most personal record, but not because it's bare and raw, but because it's surreal and dreamlike. He flits between our reality and his own, a world of only dreamers and travelers, flickering lights of towns, shadows and ghosts, birds and trees. It's his way finding joy in his solitude.” – Pitchfork “Lush orchestration holds the airy melody aloft, as violin, mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar, castanet punctuated percussion and haunting backing vocals join in the soul-searching quest.” -- NPR Music “Songs We Love” “Its joys are tinged with sadness, its brightness is enhanced by the twilight of its boundaries. With Dark Bird Is Home, the Tallest Man on Earth has reached a new pinnacle.” — PopMatters The Tallest Man On Earth (aka Sweden’s Kristian Matsson) releases his fourth and fullest album, Dark Bird Is Home, today on Dead Oceans. It is deeper, darker more sophisticated and personal than anything The Tallest Man has previously created. Reliably, the melodies and arrangements are sturdy and classic, and the lyrics and their delivery are both comforting and alarming. You should eXpect the loudest and proudest songs yet from The Tallest Man On Earth on album number four, but also the softest and the lowest. Tomorrow, The Tallest Man will kick off his first ever tour with a full-band, and neXt week he’ll make his late night television debut. In between Forecastle and Lollapalooza, he’s adding a Midwest tour, which will include a performance at the Newport Folk Festival, as well as an additional New York show in June.

Schwarzenegger vows veto any budget excluding increased education funding at TSU today BY MICHAEL ARELLANO AND CHRISTINE AMARANTUS Daily Titan Staff Writer [email protected] The founder of the Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust is scheduled to speak in the Titan Student Union’s Alvarado AB at 2 p.m. today. Bradley Smith, whose organization contends that the Holocaust did not occur, will talk about what he calls “forbidden topics within student journalism.” Smith has a history of causing controversy on uni- versity campuses across the United States. In February of this year, the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s student newspaper was met with strong opposition when they ran an online advertisement purchased by Smith. “Some members of Madison’s Jewish community, and others, are outraged that the Herald would give this infamous denier a platform to spew his veiled anti-Semitism,” said Nick Penzenstadler, the UW pa- per’s publisher. A self-proclaimed “Holocaust revisionist,” Smith argues the Nazi gas chambers did not exist and spoke at the 2006 Holocaust conference hosted by Presi- dent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran, Iran. “Well, I don’t have an ideology,” Smith said. “Es- sentially, I’m encouraging a free exchange of ideas about a taboo question.” PHOTO COURTESY MCT CSUF’s Hillel club adviser Mark Filowitz com- Gov.
