The Tallest Man on Earth, a.k.a. Kristian Matsson, is not a circus sideshow act. Nor is he actually the VIDEO tallest man on earth. The average-height, Swedish-born Matsson is an Indie folk singer/songwriter whose size escalates with the brilliance of his music and mesmerizing stage presence.

In tandem with the release of his fourth full-length album, “Dark Bird is Home,” on May 12, Mattson brings his world tour to Boston’s Orpheum Theatre. This will be Matsson’s first time touring with a full band.

A 21st-century folk troubadour, Matsson resembles a young John Mellencamp in appearance, but has gritty vocals reminiscent of . He has, on many occasions, been likened to Dylan in terms of his songwriting ability and vocal style. Classically trained on guitar as a child, Matsson didn’t experiment with his own style until he was in high school. He created his personal brand by combining fingerpicking guitar work with poetic, moody and evocative lyrics. There’s a simple SHARE elegance to his folk tunes and an “Everyman” appeal. Part of Matsson’s originality is due to a talent that few artists have. The synergy between his voice SUBSCRIBE and the guitar is so strong that he rarely needs to record vocals and instruments separately. The 1 of 3 4/14/15, 9:03 PM Concert Preview: The Tallest Man on Earth | Boston Magazine http://www.bostonmagazine.com/sponsor-content/concert-preview-th... voice-guitar connection is also evident on stage when he tiptoes, stops, stares and reflects, all the Subscribe Now while continuing the intricate finger work that reflects his technical training. Give a Gift For someone with a classical background and brooding music, as well as ordinary height (perhaps Customer Service short, by Swedish standards), the moniker “The Tallest Man on Earth” may seem like a bit of a misnomer. It was actually something Matsson chose randomly when he needed a stage name. At the Table of Contents time (2006), he was a member of the Swedish garage rock band The Montezumas and did his songwriting on the side. Matsson went solo that year with a self-titled début album.

The Tallest Man on Earth’s fame has been growing ever since. “Shallow Grave,” Matsson’s first full-length album, was released in 2008 and earned accolades from NPR (National Public Radio) and Pitchfork Media, producers of the annual Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. “The Wild Hunt,” his second album — and first on the Dead Oceans label — was number 38 on the Swedish music charts in 2010. By 2012, Matsson’s “There’s No Leaving Now” hit number 14 in Sweden and number 34 in the United States.

“Dark Bird is Home,” Matsson’s newest endeavor, is comprised of songs and sounds from various countries, studios and barns, and pays homage to the artist’s rural roots. “Sagres,” the new single from the album, presents Matsson at his most personal and direct. He sings, “It’s not the sting of cities flickering in life, no // It’s not me knowing there’s a deeper in the dust, no // It’s not the reasoning with shadows that are gone, no // It’s not me knowing I’m yet to see the fire. // It’s just all this doubt.”

There’s no doubt that this master wordsmith and innovative musician’s height as an artist is rising among an ever-increasing fan base.
