Elsie Gaisie-Ahiabu 21st August, 2020 Date ii University of Ghana http://ugspace.ug.edu.gh ABSTRACT A study was undertaken in certain locations with contextual factors conducive to the sex trade in the capital city of Ghana; Accra. The areas were as follows: Konkomba market, Agbobloshie, Abuja/CMB, Railways, Dome/St Johns, Madina, Okaishie/druglane, Awoshie/Mangoase, Chorkor and Korle Gonno. The objectives of the study were to investigate the characteristics of child sex workers, examine what drives them into the trade, identify the challenges child sex workers encounter and how they cope with the challenges. A conceptual framework was designed to guide the study and three theories; the Eco Developmental Theory, Lifestyle Exposure Theory and the Resilience Theory were used to guide the study. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used for data collection. The Respondent Driven Sampling methodology was used to collect quantitative data from a sample of 220 child sex workers in investigating the characteristics and drivers of child sex work. In-depth interview guides were used to collect qualitative data from 10 child sex workers to ascertain the challenges they faced and how they coped. Analysis of the quantitative data was done by using descriptive and explanatory analysis, cross tabulations and the binary logistic regression. Thematic network analysis was used for the qualitative data. Various findings were made from their socio-demographic characteristics, reasons for engaging in sex work, challenges they faced and their coping mechanisms among other related factors. Results showed that child sex work was rife in the locations investigated and were within the ages of 12-17 years. Majority of the child sex workers were aged between 15-17 years and are Christians, with the bivariate analysis indicating the second highest religious grouping being Muslims who mostly were among the older adolescents aged between 16-17 years. The child sex workers had very minimal educational attainment with almost 87 percent being school drop-outs. Almost all the child sex workers (97.4%) migrated to practice their trade in the locations sampled. The research showed 96 percent of them lived with either both parents, a parent or a relative prior to engaging in the sex trade. Two types of child sex workers were identified; the seaters who are sedentary at a location and the roamers who solicit for clients on the streets and places where clients might be available. Bivariate analysis indicated the roamers are generally younger than the seaters at ages 15-16 and 12-14 years respectively. They have an average of 4-6 clients a day and earn an average of GHc 108.38 (US$ 27) on a good day. Sexual debut was found to be below the legal age of consent of 16 years in Ghana; first sex was between 12-15 years with first birth between 13-16 years. Childhood poverty was identified as a main driver of child sex work as nearly 65 percent reported going to bed without food. They reported encountering challenges in their trade which included abuses (physical, emotional and sexual), indebtedness, refusal of clients to pay for services rendered among others. Certain coping mechanisms were adopted to cope with these challenges. They reduced abuse by keeping to known regular clients, collected money before services, practiced interfemoral to make more money, relied on each other for social support among other strategies including use of drugs to reduce inhibitions in order to stay in the trade despite the challenges. Recommendations were made based on key findings of the study. Key recommendations include strategies to be adopted to keep the girl-child in school, parental irresponsibility should be addressed through legislation and that migration of teenagers especially the girl-child should be curbed nationally. Smith Abstract This Article serves as the first law review essay to engage the feminist debates regarding sex work and human rights in the African context. This Article surveys “antiprostitution” and ”pro-sex-worker” feminist arguments and activities in the sub-Saharan Africa; explores the debate surrounding the legal frameworks of legalization, decriminalization, prohibition, and abolition of prostitution in a number of African countries including Senegal, where prostitution is legal and regulated, and South Africa where prostitution remains illegal despite civil society advocacy for decriminalization; and calls for the empowerment of African sex workers by arguing for a human rights-based transformation in African governments’ legal and policy posture towards sex work. Part I of this Article explores both the feminist arguments against prostitution and in favor of sex workers’ rights. Part II traces the development of the distinction between forced and unforced prostitution in international law and argues that the international human rights system creates a foundation for the realization of sex workers’ rights in Africa. Part III explores the debates regarding the criminalization of prostitution in a number of African countries and includes case studies from Senegal and South Africa.

    MOBILE SEXWORKERS AND STI/HIV RISKS By N. Timoshkina, A. Lombardo, L. McDonald INTRODUCTION Women in the sex trade are commonly perceived to be at a higher risk for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and have been historically blamed for the spread of diseases. Public concerns and indignation against sex trade workers have increased dramatically in the past two decades in light of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Activists for sexworkers’ rights have long argued that, in the industrialized countries, the majority of female sexworkers practice safe sex and are not a high risk group for STIs/HIV (e.g., McKeganey & Barnard, 1996; Morgan-Thomas, Brussa, Munk, & Jirešová, 2006). However, as will be discussed further in the text, reliable statistical data supporting this argument is limited and rather dated. Furthermore, situations vary in many parts of the developing world where STI/HIV prevalence among commercial sexworkers is significantly higher than among the general population (UNAIDS, 2004). Risks of contracting STIs/HIV are also higher for transgender/transsexual and male sexworkers (UNAIDS, 2004; UNAIDS & WHO, 2005) who may have sex with both men and women, thus representing a risk for both homosexual and heterosexual STI/HIV transmission (UNAIDS, 2002). Sexworkers who inject drugs are especially vulnerable to STI/HIV risks (UNAIDS, 2004; UNAIDS & WHO, 2005). In fact, the overlap between the commercial sex trade and intra- venous (IV) drug use is considered by many experts to be the primary driving force behind the spread of the HIV epidemic (UNAIDS, 2004; UNAIDS & WHO, 2005). 1 Active internal (mostly from rural to urban areas) and transnational migration of both sexworkers and their clients exacerbate the problems identified above.

The authors examined commercial sex work in selected public Universities in Ghana to inform policy and program decisions for safer sex at the universities in Ghana. Methods: The study was an exploratory-mixed-method design. Respondents were identifed using purposive and snowballing techniques while semi-structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews were used for data collection between 2017and 2019. Quantitative data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23 and qualitative data analyzed thematically. Results: Findings show that there is a proliferation of commercial sex work on university campuses in Ghana for fnancial, material, and emotional gains. Student sex workers have devised various strategies to combine academic work and sex work. Prospective customers are solicited by hanging out in drinking bars and nightclubs in and around university campuses at night and/or leaving contact details with pimps to be contacted for services. Brothels are also springing up in and around the university campuses in the form of movie houses and student sex workers convert their hostel rooms into brothels. Price negotiation is based on the environment, duration, the sex workers’ perceived safety of the sexual act, customer’s preferences for styles, and positions adopted for sex.

Rahman Introduction Human trafficking is a human phenomenon that has been and continues to be practiced for centuries now (Ali et al 2001). Like the global economic crisis, human trafficking is a global crisis that is inextricably linked to the current move of globalization in the sex industries involving women and children (Hoque, 2010). Hoque examines the painful reality of female sex workers in Bangladesh and argues that the current rate of growth in sex trade in Bangladesh is fostered by social and economic vulnerabilities that impel young women to engage in commercial sex work. Consequently, what has emerged in Bangladesh and across the borders in India, Malaysia, Pakistan and other Middle Eastern countries is the culture of child trafficking both internally and across borders (Hoque 2010). In this paper, I will explore the dimensions of human trafficking by distinguishing between different types of trafficking. The distinction is based on the interpretation of the trafficked victim as a commodity. Thereby, several markets according to consumer needs can be distinguished. I will explain these consumer needs and the supply chains aimed at satisfying these needs. These chains have become increasingly globalized, which means that we have to understand the issue in the framework of contemporary globalization and especially global capitalism. Definition of Human Trafficking Bales (2004) defines contemporary slavery as a “social and economic relationship in which a person is controlled through violence or paid nothing, and economically exploited.” In the old form of slavery, Africans were specifically transported to the New World based on their race and specific capabilities.
