Most widely known as a uniquely talented (in terms of chops and preternatural ability) yet tasteful hired gun bassist for the more adventurous rock guitarists of recent times (ex-Frank Zappa guitarist/solo artist Mike Keneally, Steve Vai, Dweezil Zappa, ex-MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer), Beller has lived more lives in his ten years in Los Angeles than most folks live in thirty. His artistic pursuits not fully sated by playing bass, he became a freelance writer on the side, penning three years' worth of columns for Bass Player Magazine, and doing interviews for various M.I. industry publications on such industry legends as W.G. "Snuffy" Walden ( The West Wing, thirtysomething ) and Billy Sheehan. All this somehow still not enough, Beller worked his way up (from 1997-2002) through the corporate structure of SWR Sound Corporation, the largest independent manufacturer of bass amplification products in the world. By 2002, he was the company's Vice President. Past members Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute), Steve Hackett (guita r) and Anthony Phillips (guitar), also played major roles in the band in its ear ly years. Genesis are among the top 30 highest-selling recording artists of all time, with approximately 150 million albums sold worldwide.1 In the late 1960s, with the release of their first album, Genesis's music was in itially regarded by the band and the fans as a pop experiment, referring to then -popular melodic pop.2 Then, over the course of a year, (beginning with their se cond album in mid-1970) they quickly evolved into a progressive rock band with t he incorporation of complex song structures and elaborate instrumentation. Their concerts became theatrical experiences with innovative stage design, pyrotechni cs, extravagant costumes and on-stage stories. This second phase was characteris ed by lengthy performances such as the 23 minute "Supper's Ready" and the 1974 c oncept album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Emerging from public school backgrounds and uncertain beginnings under the wing of pop producer Jonathan King, Genesis were signed by Charisma records on the strength of ... And The Lamb, Lies Down, On Broadway their innovative live shows. Supported by the label, the band’s music grew in ambition across four albums in the early 1970s, with long numbers and music which appealed to a growing underground market that largely ignored the trapping of the pop chart scene. Not until their fifth album did Genesis have any significant single success with the unlikely top twenty breakout hit “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)”. Although their longer tracks could be said to encompass the genre, the band only embarked on a proper concept album with The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, released in 1974. Surprisingly, it eschewed the scope afforded by a double gatefold album in favour of shorter songs, connected by linking pieces. The subject of the album also steered away from the band’s normal very English-centric material, and instead focused on the struggles of an immigrant youth trying to come to terms with life in New York City. Although supported by a lengthy world tour centred on the new album. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was not an unqualified success commercially, yet today, album and tour taken together, the reputation of this ambitious work has grown.
