Last month I reported that we had received a Healthy Habits grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield and would be providing a healthy snack each afternoon to your child. To kick of the Healthy Habits Snack Program, I spoke with each class this past month about the food pyramid and the importance of developing good habits as a child or teenager. For instance, we talked about how the choices they make today may not have a visible impact now, but down the road, as they grow older, poor choices can lead to heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.

We also talked about the recommendation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that children and teenagers get 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week and different ways this can be incorporated into their day. Did you know that the recommendation for screen time (TV, computer, video games, etc. combined) is no more than 2 hours per day?

Nutrition labels and portion sizes were briefly addressed and over the next few weeks will be covered in more detail in the classroom. I encourage you to look over the attached food pyramid and its recommendations and discuss these with your children. Also, ask them what they choose today as their healthy snack. Remem- ber, healthy children learn better!

Some websites that you and your children might find helpful (and fun!) include:

Our goal is to help your child develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, feel free to call or e-mail.

Boxtops for Education

We received a check from Boxtops for Education for the first half of the year in the amount of $100.50! This is very exciting because usually, we don’t receive this much for an entire year! THANK YOU, to everyone who has sent boxtops and recruited others to collect them for us as well. Keep up the good work!
