    Tax and AC/DC Kim G C Moody FCPA, FCA, TEP September 21, 2015 Those of you who know me well will know that my first career choice was to be a music teacher. I studied and played music classically well into my teens. When I realized that my talents would likely not provide me a stable living, I switched gears and became a Chartered Accountant. I still love music – all types of music with a few exceptions – but I have a soft spot for classic rock which is often playing in my office. One of my all time favorite bands is AC/DC. Their straight-ahead blues rock with very simple (almost comical) lyrics is exactly what I like to listen to when I need to turn my brain off (which doesn’t happen very often). Accordingly, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to attend AC/DC’s concert in Edmonton on September 20, 2015. It was a cold and wet night, but that didn’t dampen the spirit of the crowd. Classic rock concerts and tax go together like wine and cheese. The last time that AC/DC was on tour in Canada was 2009 and I attended their concert in Vancouver. I wrote a blog about tax and AC/DC back then and I’m continuing that tradition here. So what was I thinking about while listening? OXOBY* We use tools from experimental economics to address the age-old debate regarding who was a better singer in the band AC/DC. Our results suggest that (using wealth maximization as a measure of ‘‘better’’) listening to Brian Johnson (relative to listening to Bon Scott) resulted in ‘‘better’’ outcomes in an ultimatum game.     Rock and Popular Music 1960 - 2000 Cultural and Historic Background Information Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the early 1950s and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom. It originates from 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily from the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew strongly from several other genres such as electric blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical styles. Musically, rock has centered on the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with electric bass, drums, and one or more singers. Usually, rock is song-based music with a 4/4 time signature using a verse–chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political. At the beginning of the 1960s, pop and rock and roll trends of the 1950s continued; nevertheless, the rock and roll of the decade before started to merge into a more international, eclectic variant. Black child, I will. I do. Back in Black290 FEEL THAT BACK IN BLACK has the best opening of any rock album. The I tolling bell, the sense of mourning mixed with threat, the slow guitar picking out an ominous death march with the heartbeat drum behind it that builds to an address by what may be the Devil declaring that he’s coming to take you, the listener, to Hell. It’s “Hell’s Bells” we hear. It’s both a warning and an invitation. And those factors were always at the core of AC/DC. The first time I heard Back in Black was memorable. Picture coastal rural Western Australia, hundreds of miles from the major centre of population (Perth), and four or five panel vans with their backs open, so-called chicks in skin-tight jeans posing to their advantage and their ‘Rock’ boyfriends (‘Rocks’ were a ‘working-class’ gang of the time) in black tee-shirts, black jeans, and ripple-soled desert boots (or ‘DBs’), swigging from ‘long-neck’ beer and Jack Daniels bottles, rocking out to the new AC/DC album beside the Chapman River.

    Proceedings of the 24th Association of Public Authority Surveyors Conference (APAS2019) Pokolbin, New South Wales, Australia, 1-3 April 2019 Let There Be Rock: The AC/DC Phenomenon Volker Janssen APAS Publications Officer [email protected] ABSTRACT In a successful career spanning more than 45 years, AC/DC have persistently ignored trends in popular music and resolutely stuck to their bluesy, stripped-to-the-bone brand of high- voltage rock ’n’ roll. This paper investigates the AC/DC phenomenon by examining song lyrics and connotations, the band’s work rate, and the vocalist debate (Bon Scott vs. Brian Johnson). Furthermore, a group of 82 hardcore fans is examined to get a better understanding of their passion for the band, and it is outlined how the AC/DC brand is increasingly being marketed to a larger consumer base not limited to music lovers. It was found that the word ‘rock’ is by far the most prominent in AC/DC song titles but lyrically almost half of all AC/DC songs revolve around sex. While the frequency of album releases slowed considerably over time, the band generally played 150 live gigs following each studio album. Bon Scott material continues to account for at least 45% of the songs included in typical AC/DC live sets. Analysis of a questionnaire revealed how committed the cohort of hardcore fans is. They generally became serious fans in their early teens, prefer the older material, experienced their first gig during early adulthood and enjoyed up to 124 gigs since. This paper also demonstrates how one can collect, analyse, interpret and present data.
