33-Day Preparation for Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary Following the itinerary of Saint Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort with selections of writings from the Popes and Saints 1 Introduction Saint Louis de Montfort set forth a revolution of spirituality in teaching us about Marian consecration and giving us a 33-day plan to prepare our souls for that big step. What is this consecration? He described this consecration as being a form of “slavery” to Mary. Slavery means that we do nothing without her. We choose not to have a will apart from hers. He even invites us to wear a chain to signify that close bond with her. He elaborated the various consequences of that bond, saying that we share everything with her including our prayers, our intentions, our actions, and our merits. Fundamentally he is saying that we choose to become totally dependent on her: we receive everything through her and share everything with her. At first this sounds radical and may even sound a little scary or seem like a lot of work. As we come to understand the way the spirit of the world has infected our thinking, however, and as we get in touch with our own woundedness, we come to discover that this is a merciful gift from heaven. It is a sweet path of salvation. In fact, it is better than we could have ever hoped for! What it means is that there is a sweet, loving, perfect mother who actually wants to live in this kind of close relationship with us. -

Prayer in the Life of Saint Francis by Thomas of Celano
PRAYER IN THE LIFE OF SAINT FRANCIS BY THOMAS OF CELANO J.A. Wayne Hellmann Brother Thomas of Celano,1 upon the request of Pope Gregory IX,2 shortly after the 1228 canonization of Francis of Assisi, wrote The Life of St. Francis.3 In the opening lines, Thomas describes the begin- nings of Francis’s conversion. Thomas writes that Francis, secluded in a cave, prayed that “God guide his way.”4 In the closing lines at the end of The Life, Thomas accents the public prayer of the church in the person of pope. After the canonization Pope Gregory went to Francis’s tomb to pray: “by the lower steps he enters the sanc- tuary to offer prayers and sacrifices.”5 From beginning to end, through- out the text of The Life of St. Francis, the author, Brother Thomas, weaves Francis’s life together through an integrative theology of prayer. To shape his vision of Francis, Thomas, as a hagiographer, moves with multiple theological and literary currents, old and new. At the core of his vision, however, Thomas presents the life of a saint that developed from beginning to end in prayer. Celano, the place of his birth, is a small city in the Abruzzi region southeast of Aquila. Thomas may have included himself a reference in number 56 of his text that “some literary men and nobles gladly joined” Francis after his return from Spain in 1215. -

Most Holy Name of Jesus
Most Holy Name of Jesus SAINT OF THE DAY 03-01-2021 "Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it." The words of Our Lord in John's Gospel stress the importance of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, actually venerated from the earliest centuries of Christianity, as attested by the various Christograms (those combinations of Greek or Latin letters of the alphabet to form acronyms of the name of Christ) found in early Christian art. The liturgical cult of the Name of Jesus, however, would only take root between the 15th and 16th centuries. The sacredness surrounding the name of Jesus, which means "God saves", a name imposed on him by Mary and Joseph after the command they had individually received from the angel, is grafted into God's gradual revelation to Israel unfolding throughout the Old Testament. Here the name seems to be the core of God's pedagogy to make Himself known to men and lead them to Himself. In the theophany of the burning bush (Ex 3: 1-15) the hidden God of the Old Testament reveals Himself as "I am he who I am", thus answering Moses' question of what name he would have to report to the Israelites in order to be obeyed, and so that he could free them from the slavery of Egypt. That name – enclosed in the sacred tetragrammaton YHWH, which many Jews do not pronounce, and expressed by the title of Lord (Adonai) – communicates that "God is the fullness of Being and of every perfection, without origin and without end" ( Catechism of the Catholic Church, 213); it also communicates God's faithfulness to His promise, to be fulfilled with Jesus Crucified and expressed in the prophecy pronounced before the Passion: "When you have exalted the Son of man, then you will know that I am" (Jn 8:28). -

FRANCIS Lecture 2 THE MODERN STUDY OF THE SOURCES The modern approach to the study of Franciscan hagiography began with the Irish Franciscan Luke Wadding, who in 1623 published a critical edition of the Writings of St. Francis, Opusucla Sancti Patris Francisci Assisiensis, in Antwerp. In 1625 Wadding began the publication of the Annales Minorum, a chronological history of the Order of Friars Minor from the beginnings till the year 1540. Other chronicles of the Order had been published by Nicholas Glassberger in 1508, Mark of Lisbon in 1557, and Francesco Gonzaga in 1587, to mention the most important. In 1671 the Jesuit scholar Daniel Papenbroch discovered a manuscript in Perugia, containing a life of St. Francis by brother John of Perugia. The manuscript was published again in the Acta Sanctorum by another Jesuit, Cornelius Suyskens, in 1768, as part of the monumental work of the Bollandists. It became known as the Anonymous of Perugia. Suyskens had also discovered the First Life of St. Francis by Thomas of Celano. In 1803 Stefano Rinaldi discovered the manuscript containing the second portrait which Thomas of Celano gives of St. Francis in 1247, namely, The Remembrance of the Desire of a Soul. The discovery of these biographies prompted the scholar Niccolo Papini to publish two volumes entitled La Storia di S. Francesco d’Assisi (1825-27). In 1856 Stanislao Melchiorri published a compilation of the documentation which was discovered in his book La Leggenda di San Francesco d’Ascesi scritta dalli suoi compagni. -

Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort’s Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary Choose a day for the Consecration To begin, choose the date of a Marian Feast on which to make the consecration. Whichever Feast you choose will determine the date to begin a 33-day period of spiritual preparation, i.e., you follow spiritual exercises for 33 days, and the next day will be the Marian Feast on which you consecrate yourself. REMEMBER, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary, That Never Was It Known That
August 15, 2021 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Do you ever feel like you could use some help approaching God in your prayers? The Memorare is a prayer that reminds us that we have a wonderful advocate and protector in the mother of our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, pictured at right. In our prayers to her we honor and worship her Son, who is more than happy to listen to His mother’s pleas on our behalf. The Memorare, printed below, invites us to ask the Blessed Mother for her assistance and her grace, especially when we feel most troubled in our daily lives. REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy inter- cession was left unaided. Inspired with this confi- dence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sor- rowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. The actual author of the Memorare is unknown. It has been traditionally attributed to the abbot St. Bernard of Clairvaux from the 12th century. This is possibly because it was championed byanotherBernard, the French priest Claude Bernard, who used it extensively in his ministry to the poor and to prisoners (including some quite hardened criminals!) in the 17th century. Claude Bernard credited reciting the Memorare with curing him of a serious illness. He had some 200,000 copies of the prayer printed up and distributed in leaflets in various languages during his lifetime. -

BLESSED LOUIS MARIE GRIGNION DE MONTFORT MARK HEATH, O.P. II: The Man and the Book of the True Devotion HERE was one thing in which Blessed de Montfort was not like St. Dominic: his size. Dominic, according to X-ray [I pictures of his · coffin was five feet five inches in height; Louis was more nearly six feet six. St. Dominic was thin and wiry; de Montfort was large, brawny and strong. He had in herited from his father a very strong and robust body. Often when he directed the building of churches, he was known to move timber and stones which were too heavy for the peasants with whom he worked and to whom he preached. On one occasion while preaching in a town square he was inter rupted and annoyed by a crowd of drinkers. They were seated at a table near the place where he was preaching and were singing and shouting. They were so loud and boisterous that the audience could not follow the sermon. De Montfort noticed this, and walking over to the men, seized the tables one by one, and turned them over. The crocks and bottles went scattering to the ground; the drinkers, to the nearest cover as fast as their legs would take them. Blessed Louis returned and placidly continued his sermon. Yet despite his great strength and fine physique, the effect of grace on his character was to make him gentle and mild. "I should have been the terror of France were it not for grace" he once said of himself.
