3.1 regiONAL STRUCTURE

New South Wales is Australia’s most populous state with 7,290,3455 residents or 32.1% of the Australian population. Bowls New South Wales has four regions in metropolitan Sydney, and nine country regions.

The New South Wales Bowls regions for planning and development are

In 2013, New South Wales had:

24 Table 3.1 presents details of bowls membership and reveals there were 72,586 playing members and 149,314 non-playing members in New South Wales. This imbalance in favour of non-playing members stems from the long history of a high proportion of licensed clubs with gaming machines, and additional recreational facilities at New South Wales bowls clubs.

Of the 221,900 bowls club members in New South Wales, • 32.7% were playing members • 67.3% were non-playing members • 66.8% of members were located in country New South Wales.

New South Wales regions with the greatest number of bowls club members were • Hunter • Greater Western Sydney • North Coast • North Sydney • South Coast.

4.1 regiONAL STRUCTURE

Queensland is Australia’s third largest state in terms of resident population with 4,560,0596 persons or 20.1% of the Australian population. Queensland and Tasmania are Australia’s most decentralised states. They are the only states/ territories where the majority of the population does not live in the capital city (55% of Queensland residents live in a country region). Following restructuring of the census regions in 2013, Bowls Queensland has six ‘hub’ regions, with twenty regions: Two hub regions in metropolitan Brisbane (including the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast regions), and four country hub regions.

The Queensland hub regions nominated for the 2013 Census and for planning bowls development are:

v Country Queensland Hubs • Wide Bay Burnett • Downs Condamine Maranoa • Central Queensland Whitsundays • North and Far North Queensland

The locations of these regions are shown in Figure 4.1.

4.2 MEMBERS, PLAYERS AND PARTICIPANTS

In 2013, queensland had:

• 37 bowls associations • 333 bowls clubs • 99,140 playing and non-playing members • 137,805 participants in all forms of bowls

5.1 regiONAL STRUCTURE

South Australia is Australia’s fifth most populous state with 1,654,7787 residents or 7.3% of the Australian population. Bowls South Australia has four identified regions in metropolitan Adelaide, and eight country regions.

The South Australian regions for the 2013 Census and for bowls planning and development are:

Unlike New South Wales and Queensland, South Australia does not have a high number of bowls club members compared with bowls participants and players.

Of the 19,352 bowls club members in South Australia, • 73.0% were registered pennant playing members • 12.6% were non-pennant playing members • 14.3% were non-playing members • 59.1% of members were located in country South Australia.

Victoria is Australia’s second most populous state with 5,623,4928 residents or 24.8% of the Australian population. Bowls Victoria currently has five identified regions in metropolitan Melbourne, and eleven country regions.

51 Table 6.1 presents details of bowls membership and reveals there were 48,267 playing members (including 35,212 pennant playing members and 13,055 non-pennant playing members) and 20,474 non-playing members in Victoria.

Of the 68,741 bowls club members in Victoria, • 51.2% were registered pennant playing members • 19.0% were non-pennant playing members • 29.8% were non-playing members • 59.3% of members were located in country Victoria.

The Victorian regions with the greatest number of bowls club members were : • Sandbelt • Yarra • Eastern Ranges • West Coast • Peninsula Casey.

7.1 regiONAL STRUCTURE

Western Australia is Australia’s fourth most populous state with 2,430,2529 residents or 10.7% of the Australian population. Bowls Western Australia has four regions in metropolitan Perth and five country regions.

The Western Australian regions for the 2013 Census and for bowls planning and development are:

Of the 43,358 bowls club members in Western Australia, • 28.5% were registered pennant playing members • 13.2% were non-pennant playing members • 58.3% were non-playing members • 40.2% of members were located in country Western Australia.

The Western Australian regions with the greatest number of bowls club members were in the Country: • Southern Perth • South Western WA • South Coastal Perth • Northern Perth.

8.1 regiONAL STRUCTURE

Tasmania is Australia’s smallest state (and ranks sixth among states and territories) with 512,01910 residents or 2.3% of the Australian population. Bowls Tasmania has four regions; Hobart and South and three country regions.

The Tasmanian regions in the 2013 Census and for planning bowls development are

The northern territory is Australia’s least populous state/territory with 234,83611 residents or 1.04% of the Australian population. Northern Territory Bowls has three longer-term identified regions; one metropolitan region and two country regions.

The Northern Territory regions for longer term Bowls Censuses and for planning bowls development are • Metropolitan Darwin and Top End • Katherine Barkly • Central Australia.

However, in the 2013 Census, the Northern Territory has been analysed as a single region.

The Australian Capital Territory has 374,65812 residents, or 1.7% of the Australian resident population. The ACT is classified as one administration region, although Bowls ACT encompasses bowls competitions and programs extend beyond the Territory’s border, and includes the City of (with an additional population of 40,620 residents).

68 8.2 MEMBERS, PLAYERS AND PARTICIPANTS

Of the 8,701 club members in Tasmania, • 50.9% were registered pennant playing members • 13.8% were non-pennant playing members • 35.2% were non-playing members • 53.6% of members were located in country Tasmania (ie northern, north-western and eastern regions). The Tasmanian region with the greatest number of bowls club members was Hobart and South.

Of the 339 club members in the Northern Territory, • 38.9% were registered pennant playing members • 18.5% were non-pennant playing members • 33.1% were non-playing members.

Of the 5,792 club members in the Australian Capital Territory, • 48.4% were registered pennant playing members • 28.5% were non-pennant playing members • 60.4% were non-playing members.
