  • Mona Lisa Smile Is the Title of a 2003 Film Directed by Mike Newell and Starring Julia
1 Mona Lisa Smile is the title of a 2003 film directed by Mike Newell and starring Julia Roberts as novice art professor Katherine Ann Watson at Wellesley, a private women's liberal arts college west of Boston, during the school year 1953/54. She is free-thinking and unorthodox in her teaching methods and a product of a state university rather than one of the elite colleges, so she is initially not respected by students or most other faculty members. It is hoped that perhaps she will make up in brains what she lacks in pedigree. She is referred to as "Bohemian" but she would probably not appear so in a less stuffy and tradition-bound place. Her artistic tastes would seem modern and her feminism was perhaps a bit ahead of the main wave, but she also shows herself to be bound by a number of social conventions. The four main students whose stories thread throughout the movie are Betty (Kirsten Dunst), Joan (Julia Stiles), Giselle (Maggie Gyllenhaal), and Connie (Ginnifer Goodwin). Betty is by far the most traditional in her plans and outlook. She is the most bigoted, bad- tempered, rude, and least open to change. She is also the one who ends up with the most change in circumstances, going from a young student with no plans other than a perfect marriage to a divorcing woman moving to Greenwich Village. Joan blossoms during the year and actually considers her options, marriage or law school, carefully. After eloping, Joan makes an impassioned speech to Professor Watson pointing out the professor's own stereotyping, telling her that it is wrong to assume housewives have no depth and no intellect.

Dorothy Pomerantz, Forbes Staff I write about Hollywood and run the Celebrity 100 List. BUSINESS 10/31/2012 @ 2:08PM Celebrities Who Give Us Nightmares Reality show fame can be lucrative (just look at Bethenny Frankel) but it can also go horribly wrong. Spencer Pratt made a splash with his villainous performance on The Hills, but since then his career hasn’t work out quite like he had hoped. Instead of writing books, starting a fashion line and producing more TV, Pratt ended up standing by Heidi Montag’s side while she underwent multiple plastic surgeries to turn herself into the world’s saddest living Barbie doll. Perhaps that’s why the public sees Pratt as the creepiest Just in time for Halloween, here are the celebrities who creep America out the most, based on survey celebrity out there, according to E-Poll Market data from E-Poll Market Research, whose E-Score Research. E-Poll’s E-Score Celebrity service ranks more Celebrity service ranks more than 6,000 celebrities on awareness, appeal and 46 different personality than 6,000 celebrities on public awareness, appeal and 46 attributes. Its survey results show that in different personality attributes. When asked to rate Pratt, Hollywood, no one is as scary as reality show stars. 49% of survey respondents said they found him creepy. Another reality star who creeps us all out: Courtney Stodden. The teen is best-known for marrying 50- year-old actor Doug Hutchinson when she was only 16. Somehow, these two are still getting publicity. Maybe it’s because of the way Stodden dresses.

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is; what are you doing for others?" -MLK OUR VISION For over a decade, MDC has helped establish rewarding relationships between thousands of individuals, businesses and charities who care deeply about the well-being of others and the community. Through our work (video production, event planning & consulting) we want to share stories that matter, organize events that build bridges, highlight extraordinary individuals, create simple and effective ways of giving back, and act as professional matchmakers. Our mission has always been to connect the people who want to help with the people who need help the most. From the start, we've witnessed heartbreaking scenarios where trauma and hardship causes a child or family to feel isolated and hopeless. Despite what we're taught, time is more precious than gold and we strive to make every day, hour and minute count. The world does not stop when tragedy strikes; but good people can and do. We enlist the help of caregivers across every business sector around the globe and rely on them to help us create special moments in time that bring hope and joy to those suffering through hardship. We've created an Active Response Team; an unofficial team of do-gooders who are willing to step up to the plate when needed. And just like the word "team" signifies, together everyone achieves more. MDC works by cause, not by client -- and in doing so, it allows us to foster collaboration and look after the interests of all involved. The impact we make by working together is more powerful and far-reaching than most individuals can achieve on their own.

  • Tracing Posthuman Cannibalism: Animality and the Animal/Human Boundary in the Texas Chain Saw Massacre Movies
The Cine-Files, Issue 14 (spring 2019) Tracing Posthuman Cannibalism: Animality and the Animal/Human Boundary in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Movies Ece Üçoluk Krane In this article I will consider insights emerging from the field of Animal Studies in relation to a selection of films in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (hereafter TCSM) franchise. By paying close attention to the construction of the animal subject and the human-animal relation in the TCSM franchise, I will argue that the original 1974 film, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre II (1986) and the 2003 reboot The Texas Chain Saw Massacre all transgress the human-animal boundary in order to critique “carnism.”1 As such, these films exemplify “posthuman cannibalism,” which I define as a trope that transgresses the human-nonhuman boundary to undermine speciesism and anthropocentrism. In contrast, the most recent installment in the TCSM franchise Leatherface (2017) paradoxically disrupts the human-animal boundary only to re-establish it, thereby diverging from the earlier films’ critiques of carnism. For Communication scholar and animal advocate Carrie Packwood Freeman, the human/animal duality lying at the heart of speciesism is something humans have created in their own minds.2 That is, we humans typically do not consider ourselves animals, even though we may acknowledge evolution as a factual account of human development. Freeman proposes that we begin to transform this hegemonic mindset by creating language that would help humans rhetorically reconstruct themselves as animals. Specifically, she calls for the replacement of the term “human” with “humanimal” and the term “animal” with “nonhuman animal.”3 The advantage of Freeman’s terms is that instead of being mutually exclusive, they are mutually inclusive terms that foreground commonalities between humans and animals instead of differences.

  • “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ..........................................................................................................................
