The appointment follows a competitive selection process. SUMMARY & BACKGROUND Ferndale's former Fire Chief, Kevin Sullivan, formally filed for retirement in April of 2019. Fire Marshal Jack Pesha was appointed to serve as the interim Fire Chief. Consistent with past practice for executive leadership appointments, the City Manager authorized a competitive national recruitment. The national recruitment resulted in approximately twenty qualified candidates; a selection panel interviewed the top four qualified candidates, including Jack Pesha, during the week of Sept. 10. The panel included members of City leadership, a former retired OakWay Fire Chief, and members of the recruitment team. The panel also received direct input from Ferndale Fire fighters. Following a robust interview process, the interview panel unanimously agreed that Jack Pesha was the candidate best fit to lead the Ferndale Fire Department forward. SUMMARY & BACKGROUND Communities for a Lifetime offers communities across the State of Michigan a chance to be recognized for engaging in an assessment and improvement planning process that makes them more "aging-friendly" through its Community for a Lifetime (CFL) program. As Michigan's population ages, communities that adapt to meet the needs of older adults, their families, and caregivers, will attract and retain more residents and be able to provide them with a better quality of life. The CFL program is part of a broader national aging-friendly communities movement and was developed by the Michigan Commission on Services to the Aging in 2007 with input from the State Advisory Council on Aging. Pace described the cost of supplies, course fees, and gas to get to and from classes, and her father’s disability, which keeps him from working. She was told by a WCCCD financial aid counselor that private loans should be able to close her financial gap. “You’re doing a good job,” Obama told Pace. “The key is just hanging in there, but you’re making good choices.” Pace later introduced then Senator Obama to a small group of WCCCD students, to whom he described his proposal for a tax credit to help pay college costs and his plan to reform the federal student loan market. “I will make college affordable for every American. Period,” Obama promised the students. Chancellor, Dr. Curtis L. Ivery and Barack Obama President-elect Obama has proposed a $4,000 tax credit that would pay nearly all the annual expenses for community college students and two-thirds of costs at four-year institutions. In return, students would have to perform 100 hours of community service each year. He would also make changes to reduce administrative costs and bank subsidies in federal student loans, and simplify the financial aid application process. Fabrizio Costantini 925 Albany st. Ferndale, MI 48220 3132837542 [email protected] ✔ 11 My desire to serve in the position of City Council Member in Ferndale is a combination of what made me want to move here just over a decade ago, in addition to my career as a Photojournalist. Ferndale is where I live, where I established my business, and where I started a family. I became interested in politics on October 7th, 2006 when my first front-page photo above the fold I had in the New York Times, the story was about James Marcinkowski and his run for United States House of Representatives in Michigan's 8th Congressional District. I have since worked on covering and spend time with many candidates in local elections and as well as presidential elections for the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal where I’ve traveled with the John McCain campaign, photographed and reported on campaign rallies for Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, and traveled with Barack Obama on his campaign bus. This involved being in close proximity with the candidates themselves and their staff, documenting their conversations with community members and constituents about an array of issues. I extensively covered the automotive bailout and Detroit’s bankruptcy which inspired me to pitch the video documentary series for The New York Times called “The Detroit Graduates”. In the midst of covering the municipal bankruptcy, I felt there was an absence of coverage and consideration of whom this was going to affect the most, Detroit’s young people. That year, I documented five seniors at Denby High School on Detroit’s east side which told the story through their perspective of what the future looked like in a time of Detroit’s economic uncertainty.
