Faculty of Applied Sciences, Universiti Teknologi MARA, 40450 Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia *E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT A total of 426 individuals from six families, six genera and ten species were collected from Tanjung Dawai while a total of 351 individuals from five families, five genera and six species were collected from Pulau Sayak. Six families that were found from Tanjung Dawai were Littorinidae, Neritidae, Potamididae, Ellobiidae, Muricidae and Assimineidae while five families that were found from Pulau Sayak were Littorinidae, Ellobiidae, Muricidae, Assimineidae and Naticidae. The abundant species at both mangrove areas were Cerithidea cingulata and Naticidae sp. Shannon Diversity Index and Evenness Index for Tanjung Dawai were 1.95 and 0.85, respectively. Shannon Diversity Index and Evenness Index for Pulau Sayak were 1.27 and 0.71, respectively. Both of the mangroves habitats of Tanjung Dawai and Pulau Sayak, Kedah appeared to have low snail species diversity but still sustain some common gastropod families of tropical mangroves. It is essential to have an economically and ecologically sound management plan in order to make the mangroves ecologically viable as well as a source of economy. Key words: snail, species richness, mangrove, Tanjung Dawai, Pulau Sayak.

  • Malaysia's Response to the December 2004 Tsunami
NO MORE IN THE COMFORT ZONE – Malaysia’s Response to the December 2004 Tsunami (paper presented at International Hydrography and Oceanography Conference and Exhibition, 3-7 July 2005, Kuala Lumpur) by Keizrul Abdullah, Tan K.S. and Ghazali N.H.M. Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia Keywords: Tsunami, coastal protection, coastal rehabilitation, countermeasures, shoreline management Introduction Nothing is more dangerous than an unknown threat. To Malaysia, a country seemingly blessed and spared from natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons and tornados, tsunamis were as alien as moon dust. The chance of one happening was extremely remote. Yet, the unexpected happened. At about 12:45 pm on 26th December 2004, three hours after a magnitude 9 earthquake shook Sumatra, the first waves of a tsunami swept into Malaysian waters through the north entrance of the Straits of Malacca. Although tremors from Indonesian earthquakes have often been felt, Peninsular Malaysia’s west coast has not experienced any tsunami in living memory. The tsunami that arrived on the shores that day - a tidal surge preceded by a sudden falling of the sea level - was met by the innocent people on the beaches with 1 curiosity and awe. On Sunday 26th December 2004, Malaysians learnt that ‘not knowing’ is a dangerous thing. The tsunami event of December 2004 challenged the disaster response mechanism of the Malaysian Government and added a new word to the vocabulary of the Malaysian public. Erstwhile exposed only to the distress created by monsoonal and flash floods, the tsunami became a new threat to be confronted. The Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (henceforth, DID) being the nation’s technical center for coastal engineering and erosion control, promptly responded with investigations and reviewed its action plans in coastal management.

  • In This Chapter, I Review the Historic Perspective of the Bujang Valley. I
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction In this chapter, I review the historic perspective of the Bujang valley. I started with the historical perspective of Bujang valley and move onto Geographic Location, demographic profile and the statement of the research problem. This chapter also focuses on demography of the study area, research objectives, statement problem, and research questions, significant of the study, scope and limitation of the study respectively. 1 1.1 The historical perspective of Bujang Valley The history of the old Malay kingdom of the Bujang Valley came back to the sixth century A.D. It established and succeeded into a significant trade and commercial centre which survived up to the thirteenth century. Since of its physical location along the trade route between the Mediterranean and China, it is very important and way connection between the east countries to the west. During this period, the Valley had contact with people of different cultural, travellers and writers from India, Sri Vijaya and Khmer visited Bujang. Therefore some of their cultural features were bring together to Bujang and these have influenced its cultural change. For example Indian writers called the kingdom the State of Kataha which in Sanskrit is translated into Katahnagara, which is recalled in the Sanskrit drama Kaumudinahotsava, written in the seventh century A.D. The old Kedah State (Katah or Chieh-Cha) may have been one of the original states governed by a local political body. But some historians are of the view that during the seventh century it developed part of the Sri Vijayan Empire. Later, in 1025 A.D.
