A Molecular Phylogenetic Perspective
Astragalus (Fabaceae): A molecular phylogenetic perspective MARTIN F. WOJCIECHOWSKI Wojciechowski, M. Brittonia 57: 382-396. 2005.-- Nucleotide sequences of the plastid mark gene and nuclear rDNA internal tran- scribed spacer region were sampled from Astragalus L. (Fabaceae), and its closest relatives within tribe Galegeae, to infer phylogenetic relationships and estimate ages of diversification. Consistent with previous studies that emphasized sampling for nrDNA ITS primarily within either New World or Old World species groups, Astragalus, with the exception of a few morphologically distinct species, is strongly supported as monophyletic based on maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses of matK sequences as well as a combined sequence dataset. The matK data provides better resolution and stronger clade support for relationships among Astragalus and traditionally related genera than nrDNA ITS. Astragalus sensu stricto plus the genus Oxytropis are strongly supported as sister to a clade com- posed of strictly Old World (African, Australasian) genera such as Colutea, Suth- erlandia, Lessertia, Swainsona, and Carrnichaelia, plus several morphologically distinct segregates of Eurasian Astragalus. Ages of these clades and rates of nucleotide substitution estimated from a fossil-constrained, rate-smoothed, Bayes- ian analysis of matK sequences sampled from Hologalegina indicate Astragalus diverged from its sister group, Oxytropis, 12-16 Ma, with divergence of Neo- Astragalus beginning ca. 4.4 Ma. Estimates of absolute rates of nucleotide sub- stitution for Astragalus and sister groups, which range from 8.9 to 10.2 x 10 -~0 substitutions per site per year, are not unusual when compared to those estimated for other, mainly temperate groups of papilionoid legumes. -
Hibbertia Fumana Sieber Ex Toelken As a CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES in Part 1 of Schedule 1A of the Act
NSW SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Preliminary Determination The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (the Act), has made a Preliminary Determination to support a proposal to list Hibbertia fumana Sieber ex Toelken as a CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES in Part 1 of Schedule 1A of the Act. Listing of Critically Endangered species is provided for by Part 2 of the Act. This species is currently provisionally listed as a critically endangered species. The Scientific Committee has found that: 1. Hibbertia fumana Sieber ex Toelken (family Dilleniaceae) has been described by Toelken and Miller (2012) as a “Decumbent shrublet, prostrate, with many branches from the base, moderately to much branched; branches, wiry, with raised leaf bases shortly decurrent, shortly fascicled-pubescent. Vestiture persistent, consisting of more or less coarse simple hairs over fine fascicled hairs on tubercles; on branches more or less densely covered with short subequal multiangulate fascicled hairs (4–7 equal arms) and without simple hairs except for intrapetiolar tufts of hairs in leaf axils; on leaves above scattered, short antrorse fine bi- or triforked to simple hairs, sparse becoming denser onto the petiole, few simple hairs along the flanks, all wearing off soon; on leaves below dense, with short subequal multiangulate fascicled hairs (4–12 subequal arms) particularly on central vein, overtopped by few simple hairs on the flanks of the revolute margins; on outer calyx moderately outside dense, with spreading coarse antrorse simple hairs over erect-spreading multiangulate fascicled hairs (8–15 subequal arms), inside dense, with forked to simple antrorse hairs over most of surface; on inner calyx lobes outside dense with spreading multiangular fascicled hairs (2–12 subequal or unequal arms) becoming smaller towards the membranous margins, overtopped by coarse antrorse simple hairs along the central ridge, inside glabrous except for a few simple hairs towards the apex. -

A recent survey suggests ~100 mature individuals in a population in South Australia population (MSBP 2010). In Victoria there are 28 known populations with a total with a total of 94,000 individuals occupaying 164 hectares (DSE 2003). In New South Wales, this species has been recorded in 23 separate plant communities, 16 of which have been classified as threatened, with most communities having experienced more than 50% decline and 13 communities still experiencing continuing decline (Benson 2006). HABITAT Subalpine to low alpine, on fine-grained, partially stable and moist greywacke scree, rock debris and gravel slopes. Sometimes in depleted tussock grasslands. FEATURES Small woody sub-shrub arising from thin, branched stems that extend to the surface from a deeply buried root stock. Foliage a dull green, leafy tufts, 30-70mm long, 10-60mm wide. Leaves divided, 20-35mm long. Leaflets in 6-10 pairs per leaf, usually folded along the mid-rib; fleshy, grey-green or grey-blue and sometimes flushed red. Flowers in bunches, purplish, clover-pink or golden-brown, arising from axils of older leaves. Seed pods swollen, darkening to orange-red at maturity, grey brown when open. Seeds 10 per pod, 3.5mm long, 3mm wide, brown. SIMILAR TAXA None. Large bloated sausage-shaped seed pods, fern-like leaf form. FLOWERING December - February FLOWER COLOURS Red/Pink, Violet/Purple FRUITING January - April PROPAGATION TECHNIQUE Difficult and should not be removed from the wild. -

Desiccation response of seed of Clianthus spp., Carmichaelia muritai, Pittosporum crassifolium and Pittosporum eugenioides A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of AgriScience in Horticulture at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Kai Yu 2015 ABSTRACT New Zealand has a rich, diverse and unique of plant life. However, the conservation status of the New Zealand indigenous vascular flora is deteriorating, with 7.6% of this flora regarded as threatened with extinction. A series of conservation approaches are required to protect species against further loss. Developing ex-situ conservation of these species requires basic information such as seed storage behaviour and seed germination requirements to be determined. However, for many species this information is missing or incomplete. The objective of this study was to determine seed storage behaviour (response to desiccation), and/or seed coat characteristics in selected New Zealand native species. Five native tree and shrub species were studied: Carmichaelia muritai, Clianthus puniceus, Clianthus maximus, Pittosporum eugenioides, and Pittosporum crassifolium. Seeds of Clianthus maximus, Clianthus puniceus, and Carmichaelia muritai were found desiccation tolerant at low moisture content (down to ~2.5%), suggesting the storage behaviour is orthodox; storage trials need to be conducted to confirm this. In contrast, the storage behaviour of Pittosporum eugenioides and Pittosporum crassifolium appears to be non-orthodox since there was some loss of viability upon drying to low moisture contents. -

All living things have been categorized into what is known as the Linnaean System of classification. Plants are grouped using common attributes until each plant is given a unique Classification. The steps of Classification are: • Kingdom • Division • Class • Order • Family • Subfamily • Genus • Species This results in a unique Botanical or Scientific name consisting of Genus and Species. Some plants are further split into sub species. Most plants have at least one common name. These are non scientific and often vary from region to region. Some plants may have the same common name, this often causes confusion so it is important to use the Botanical name. The plants right would be referred to as Eucalyptus leucoxylon subspecies leucoxylon or the South Australian Blue Gum. This plant is known as Yellow Gum in Victoria.
