The Weekly Newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip, Serving Atlanta and the World February 10, 2013 Is Jesus the Only Way? I have just finished a very fun three-part series, at the Sunday Dean’s Forum, on that question, “Is Jesus The Only Way?” You can listen to the weekly podcasts for a review (see podcasts at stphilipscathedral.org/deansforum). But, meanwhile, here are two excerpts from my sermon of 20 April, 2008 (see stphilipscathedral.org/iamtheway), which previewed my remarks recently: (From a story by Emo Philips:) I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it! Don’t do it!" He said, "Why not? Nobody loves me." I said, "Well, God loves you. Do you believe in God?" He said, "Yes." I said, "I do, too. … Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "I’m a Christian." I said, "Me, too! … Protestant; or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! … What franchise?” He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! … Northern Baptist; or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! … Northern Conservative Baptist, or Northern Liberal Baptist?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! … Northern Conservative Baptist, Great Lakes Region; or Northern Conservative Baptist, Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist, Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too! ... Northern Conservative Baptist, Great Lakes Region, Council of 1879; or Northern Conservative Baptist, Great Lakes Region, Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist, Great Lakes Region, Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over. (And from my sermon of 20 April, 2008): “In my Father’s house are many mansions. … The power of heaven, the power of God’s house, is that God’s saving grace is much larger, more spiritually spacious, than anything we can imagine. In my Father’s house, are many rooms, many mansions, many places to stay and to reside. What a beautiful image of heaven! What prevents us from getting there? Absolutism does. The hindrance to heaven today is the tyranny of absolutism. We are tempted to think of political parties as either absolutely right, or absolutely wrong. We are tempted to think of political leaders as either absolutely right or absolutely wrong. We are tempted to think of countries as either absolutely right or absolutely wrong. We are tempted to think of different religions as either absolutely right or absolutely wrong. We are tempted to think of our neighbor as either absolutely good or absolutely evil. Such all-or-nothing absolutism is dangerous. Exclusivist absolutism divides the world according to narrow human terms and not according to God’s wide kingdom. Oh, I know there are absolutes About eight days in this world, but they will never be fully defined according to our human distinctions. There are absolutes in this world, only according to God’s standards. after Peter had Let not our religion, then, become simply another player in our dangerous world of competing acknowledged Jesus absolutes. The most serious dangers facing our world today are those resulting from all-or-nothing as the Christ of God, polarities, presented by everyone from politicians to preachers. Let not our Christianity be a player in Jesus took with him that game. Peter and John and Exclusivist faith is dangerous, whether that faith is conservative or liberal. OUTREACH

2012 HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS In a Cathedral Christmas tradition of giving, on Saturday, December 15, approximately 20 parishioners in six teams fanned out across the city. They visited eighteen families with whom St. Philip’s has built Habitat for Humanity homes, delivering gift baskets filled with lovingly baked cookies and breads, fruits, nuts and other goodies provided by dozens of parishioners.

Visiting with Christmas baskets keeps St. Philip’s connected with the families whose Habitat homes we helped build, long after the building is completed. Each year we see how Habitat homes provide security for people whose hard work does not yield big bank accounts or time and resources for the Christmas extras in our gift baskets. This year, as we were welcomed by “our” Habitat families, we were able to check on the progress of one homeowner who is recovering from a serious injury; shared the excitement of children’s school and college progress; saw first-hand how Habitat houses are improving communities; and played Santa for the 8 and 10 year-old grandsons of a homeowner whose daughter had just lost her job. In this last instance, several parish families, upon hearing of the families’ situation, generously acted as Santa’s agents, returning to deliver two bikes, along with other toys and a gift card. Imagine the gratitude of a worried mother and grandmother, and the excited laughter of two boys who did not think Santa would come this year!

Thank you to all parishioners who so generously baked, purchased, PHOTO BY JOHN CHAMPION assembled and delivered Christmas goodies, continuing the giving Ruth Vaught, Lola Battle, and Judy Bodner were a few of the volunteers who tradition of Habitat Christmas baskets. delivered baskets to Habitat families in December 2012.

STEWARDSHIP

TO DATE (AS OF 01/30/13) 2013 STEWARDSHIP GOAL $2,243,000 | 754 Pledges $3,500,000 | 1,200 Pledges

JUST OVER $1,000,000 TO GO! The Cathedral community is now less than $1,000,000 from meeting its budgeted goal of $3.5 million in pledges. While our ultimate goal is for every member of this community to financially support the ministry of God, this is an important milestone. We’ll be sending the next batch of pledge cards shortly. In the meantime, if you have not pledged, please submit a pledge as soon as possible. The Chapter relies on these pledges to determine the ability of the congregation to support the daily operations of the parish. Use the attached form or go online to stphilipscathedral.org/pledge.
