Will the "Fight" Ever End?: A Critical Reading of the Metaphors and Discourses that Construct HIV/AIDS in an African Context Laura Comfort, BSc, BA English - Community, Text, Discourse Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts A GBSON LIBRARY BROCK mBTT^rpf Faculty of Humanities, Brock University St. Catharines, Ontario ©2009 Abstract In this thesis, I critically examine the discourses that inform how we conceptualise HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa as they are produced in a sample of Canadian news articles, two nonfiction texts - Stephanie Nolen's 28 Stories of AIDS in Africa and Jonathan Morgan and the Bambanani Women's Group's Long Life... Positive HIV Stories - as well as two literary texts - John Le Carre's popular fiction novel The Constant Gardener and an anthology of stories and poems from Southern Africa titled Nobody Ever Said AIDS, compiled and edited by Nobantu Rasebotsa, Meg Samuelson and Kylie Thomas. Paying particular attention to the role of metaphor in discursive formation, I have found that military metaphors, usually used in conjunction with biomedical discourses, continue to dominate what is said about HIV/AIDS. However, the use of military metaphors to conceptualise HIV/AIDS contributes to stigma and limits the effectiveness of responses to the pandemic. I argue that accessing alternative metaphors and discourses, such as biopsychosocial discourse, can lead to a more layered - and more beneficial - conceptualisation of HIV/AIDS, encouraging a more active response to the pandemic. LANGUAGE POLICY IN RWANDA: SHIFTING LINGUISTIC AND EDUCATIONAL LANDSCAPE by PAMELA PEARSON Under the Direction of Diane Belcher and Gayle Nelson ABSTRACT In the two decades since the 1994 Genocide, Rwanda has experienced pervasive societal change, due in large part to ambitious policymaking in sectors ranging from business to public health to education. Extensive language policies have also been enacted, including a 2008 Cabinet resolution shifting the medium of instruction (MOI) in all public schools from Kinyarwanda and French to English (Republic of Rwanda, 2008). The promotion of English in a formerly francophone nation inspired the present study seeking a closer look at the current state of language planning and policy (LPP) in Rwanda. Toward that end, ethnography of language policy (Hornberger & Johnson, 2007) fieldwork, consisting primarily of linguistic landscape analysis, teacher interviews, and classroom observations, was carried out in Southern Province, Rwanda throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. -

When Victims Become Perpetrators The Prosecution of Victim-Perpetrators and the Case of Dominic Ongwen Master Thesis for the Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, University of Amsterdam and Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD) 1 July 2016 Supervisor: Dr. Thijs B. Bouwknegt Second Reader: Dr. Kjell Anderson Nicole Toedtli Abstract Dominic Ongwen was abducted by soldiers of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) as a boy and he was forced to become a child soldier. Inside the LRA, he continuously rose in rank until he was allegedly given the rank of a brigadier-general in 2004. In his alleged position as LRA commander, he allegedly planned and participated in the attacks on the Pajule, Odek, Lukodi, and Abok internally displaced people's camp (IDP camp) in Northern Uganda between October 2003 and June 2004 for which, among other charges, he is going to stand trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, The Netherlands. Ongwen's abduction and his subsequent career in the LRA raise the question of where the boundary lies between being a victim and being a perpetrator. To analyse this question, three subsidiary questions are evaluated in this thesis. First, how is the question of where the boundary lies between being a victim and being a perpetrator discussed in academic theory? Second, how does theory square with reality? Furthermore, his abduction as a child and his alleged position as a commander as an adult make Ongwen a victim-perpetrator. This raises the third subsidiary question, namely how the international criminal justice system deals with victim-perpetrators. -
