TOORO KINGDOM ARCHIVES

The Archives of the Tooro Kingdom

While Tooro has an ancient and distant history, the modern-day kingdom was founded in the mid-19th century, when its dissident people broke away from the older kingdom of Bunyoro. Under British colonial government Tooro was, like other Ugandan kingdoms, subordinated to the central government, but its ruling class enjoyed a great amount of latitude in the governance of their people. Under the government of Uganda’s first President, Milton Obote, the kingdom was abolished in 1966. It was revived after the passage of the 1993 constitution; and today the Tooro Kingdom is today one of several ‘cultural institutions’ recognized by the government of the National Resistance Movement.

The kingdom’s archives formerly resided in the damp basement of the building called ‘Mukwa’, which was erected in the late 1950s to house the colonial kingdom’s administrative apparatus. After the kingdom’s abolition the archives were gradually interred, as the local government officers that occupied the building piled the basement with derelict equipment and other assorted junk. By the time the kingdom was restored the archives had effectively been buried beneath the accumulating strata, beyond the reach of scholars and government officers alike.

In 2010, however, Dr. Derek Peterson managed to insert himself into the basement, and with the help of a research assistant he extracted 25 files for inspection. In 2013 the kingdom’s Prime Minister, Mr. Stephan Kaliba, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mountains of the Moon University, giving MMU’s archivists access to the basement and temporary custody of the papers. With funding from the Cooperative Africana Materials Project of the Center for Research Libraries, the archive was removed from the basement and transferred to MMU’s campus, where the papers (which were badly degraded) were cleaned, re-covered, catalogued, and scanned.

In all the collection consists of 608 boxes of material. It is organized under the following headings:

The substantial number of personnel files contained within the archive have not been identified here for reasons of privacy.
