Box 6222 37th & “O” Streets, NW Indianapolis, IN 46206 Washington, DC 20057-1789 Cc: NCAA Board of Governors, Felicia Martin, Donald Remy, Cari Van Sensus, Amy Wilson Dear Chair DeGioia, President Emmert & NCAA Board of Governors, We, the undersigned 2,702 individuals and 57 organizations, urge the NCAA leadership and Board of Governors to publicly release all findings and recommendations of the comprehensive review of gender equity issues in NCAA sports, conducted by Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP. Our understanding is that the first phase of this review is focused on basketball and includes an investigation into the disparities that were visible during the recent Division l tournaments, as well as systemic and structural issues within the sport, and a later phase includes a review of gender equity in other sports and championships governed by the NCAA. It is critical that the NCAA not only provide complete and full disclosure of the results of this review but also include specific, actionable next steps to ensure that there is accountability and meaningful change. We must seek to improve the systems and structures that have allowed such inequities to persist for so many years. The NCAA must regain public trust and confidence in its commitment to gender equity and investment in women’s sports and, particularly given the widespread public and social media scrutiny, this can only occur through transparency and actionable items. Without complete transparency regarding the shortcomings and recommendations for change, this investigation will fall short of addressing the deeply ingrained and systemic gender inequities in NCAA sports and championships. 2 We look forward to reading the full report on the basketball championships from Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP this summer, and the broader report on other sports and championships later this year.     ANNUAL REPORT – INTRODUCTION Dear Bruins, Our department enjoyed an exciting and memorable year both on and off the field of competition in 2016- 17. Ten of our athletic teams finished among the Top 10, nationally. Of even greater significance, 126 of our student-athletes earned their degrees from this university in June and officially embarked upon the next chapter of their lives. Throughout the 2016-17 academic year, student- athletes earned Director’s Honor Roll accolades (3.0 GPA or higher) more than 980 times. In addition, our Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Academic Progress Report (APR) numbers remained high across the board and among the best in the nation. UCLA’s overall GSR of 86% stands two percentage points higher than the national average of 84%. Our football team compiled the second-highest GSR among Pac-12 schools with 88% (the national average for FBS schools is 74%). In addition, six of our teams – men’s water polo, women’s basketball, women’s golf, softball, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball – had a GSR of 100 percent. Sixteen of our 20 sports programs had a GSR of 80 percent or higher. I’ve said it before and I’ll say As a department, we always pride ourselves on team practice facilities for our football, men’s basketball it again – our student-athletes not only meet these accomplishments, but it’s absolutely worth noting and women’s basketball teams, and I know that the expectations, but they almost always exceed them.     Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I WOMEN’S Highlights Lady Vols show world-class distance dominance: Tennessee dominated Division I women’s indoor track March 13-14 – and dominated the world for more than 10 minutes. The Lady Vols captured the school’s second team title in five years at the Division I Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships and won two events during competition at Texas A&M – including a victory in world-record time in the distance medley relay. Tennessee’s time of 10 minutes, 50.98 seconds, in that event sliced more than three seconds off Villanova’s 21-year-old world mark in the 1,200-/400-/800-/1,600-meter medley, and eight seconds off UCLA’s 2002 meet record. The relay squad was anchored for the second straight year by Sarah Bowman, who figured in both Lady Vols’ event titles and collected a second meet record when she out- leaned Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego to win the mile run. “Oh, my gosh, look at what we’ve done this weekend,” said Bowman, who also was a member of the 2005 indoor championship team. “I couldn’t ask for a sweeter weekend my senior year. I can’t even put it into words. It’s so amazing. “The heart that this team has, I could actually tear up just talking about them. Just to be out here with these girls who are putting their hearts on the line for the team, and it makes you want to do it all the more.
