  • Williams and Jeter Go 2-3 in Women's 100; Davis Gets Tj Bronze
OFFICIAL TEAM USA NEWSLETTER • VOLUME V, NUMBER 4 • OSAKA, JAPAN • AUGUST 28, 2007 WILLIAMS AND JETER GO 2-3 IN WOMEN'S 100; DAVIS GETS TJ BRONZE OSAKA, Japan – Thanks to a stunning women’s 100 meters and a fine performance in the men’s triple jump, Team USA brought its medal tally to 7 Monday night at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In easily the most dramatic race of the Championships thus far, Lauryn Williams (Miami, Fla.) initially looked as though she may have won her second world title in the women’s 100. The defending world champion, who has struggled since winning the 2005 world title, got off to an outstanding start and led the field at halfway. In the latter portion of the race, however, Olympic bronze medalist Veronica Campbell of Jamaica led a surge by the rest of the field, and five women – Williams, Campbell and Americans Carmelita Jeter (Long Beach, Calif.) and Torri Edwards (Corona, Calif.) and Belgium’s Kim Gevaert – crossed the line virtually simultaneously. But the gold was down to rivals Williams and Campbell, with Williams appearing to have won when seen with the naked eye. The scoreboard first flashed Edwards as the winner, which was clearly in error. Several more minutes passed before the final results were posted – Campbell first in 11.01 (-0.2 mps), which brought an audible gasp, and some gentle grumbling, from the crowd. Williams was listed as second in an iden- tical time. (Her photo finish time was .003 behind Campbell.) Jeter, who got her best start of the meet and employed her typical strong finish, was a sur- prising third in a personal-best 11.02, and Edwards was fourth in 11.05.

  • Olympic Trials Proved to Be the One Unfortunate Stumbling Block of the Year
2016 Eugene – July 1 to July 10 The hosting of the Trials in Eugene three times in a row, for the second time, was unprecedented, and while the Trials saw no World Records on this occasion, they did produce a terrific series of marks and dramas. With live action in field events by NBC best described as minimal, US television did a typically poor job in covering what still remains as the best domestic track and field meeting in the world. The crowds and weather conditions were as follows: Attendance: July 1—20,987, July 2—21,866, July 3—22,424, July 4—21,713, July 7—21,835, July 8—22,256, July 9— 22,847, July 10—22,944 for a total of 176,972. (There was no admission charge for hammer day, July 6). • Perry, Lagat Win Gold with Strong Finishes
OFFICIAL TEAM USA NEWSLETTER • VOLUME V, NUMBER 6 • OSAKA, JAPAN • AUGUST 30, 2007 PERRY, LAGAT WIN GOLD WITH STRONG FINISHES OSAKA, Japan – Michelle Perry (Santa Clarita, Calif.) won her second straight world title and Bernard Lagat (Tucson, Ariz.) won the first gold of his storied career – and the first World or Olympic 1,500m medal for the U.S. since 1908 – Wednesday at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Nagai Stadium. One of the finest and most consistent middle-distance runners of his generation, Lagat had won two Olympic medals, was sec- ond at the 2001 World Outdoor Championships and won a World Indoor title at 3,000 meters while competing for Kenya. But a gold medal on the World Outdoor or Olympic level had eluded him. On Wednesday, the American record holder who became a U.S. citizen in 2004 – and who was cleared to com- pete as an American just one day before com- petition – celebrated his first championship competition in a Team USA jersey with a deci- sive win in the men’s 1,500 meters. The race shaped up as a U.S.-Kenya duel. 2007 world leader Alan Webb bolted to the lead at the gun, with Shedrack Kibet Korir of Kenya on his shoulder. After passing 400 meters in 58.63 seconds, the leaders of the cohesive pack settled into Webb, Korir, Lagat and Asbel Kiprop of Kenya. Kiprop took the KRIBY LEE lead with two laps to go, passing 800 meters in BERNARD LAGAT 1:58.08, followed by Webb and Lagat.

  • Gay Breaks Another Record As Usa Goes 1-3 in Men's
OFFICIAL TEAM USA NEWSLETTER • VOLUME V, NUMBER 7 • OSAKA, JAPAN • AUGUST 31, 2007 GAY BREAKS ANOTHER RECORD AS USA GOES 1-3 IN MEN’S 200; PHILLIPS TAKES LJ BRONZE OSAKA, Japan – World 100m champion Tyson Gay (Fayetteville, Ark.) broke yet another meet record held by Michael Johnson in an evening that also saw Team USA pick up two bronze medals Thursday at the IAAF World Outdoor Track& Field Championships at Nagai Stadium. At the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in June, Gay set a pair of meet records in the 100 (9.84) and 200 (19.62), the latter previously held by world record holder Michael Johnson. Running into a .8 meters-per- second headwind Thursday night, Gay took down Johnson’s meet record at the World Championships, coming from behind to win his second gold medal of the meet. Running in lane 4, Gay trailed Usain Bolt of Jamaica in lane 5 during the early stages of the race. But Gay used a powerful stretch run to pull away from Bolt, the world junior record holder, running 19.76 to Bolt’s 19.91, breaking Michael Johnson’s championship record of 19.79 set in 1995. Wallace Spearmon and Rodney Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) had strong stretch runs of their own, moving up to place third and fourth, respec- KRIBY LEE tively, in 20.05 and 20.06. TYSON GAY Dwight Phillips (Snellville, Ga.) took home bronze in the men’s long jump after a dramatic competition that saw him finish behind two men setting national records.
