email: [email protected] EPPING Forest District Council is seeking feedback from voters on any aspect of the 79 call: David Jackman on 07710 447868 polling stations or polling districts following the local elections. The Electoral Administration Act 2006 requires each local authority to carry out a review of its polling districts and polling stations, which are designed to be readily accessible to local voters. With EU Parliamentary and County Council elections in 2009, the UK Parliamentary election in 2010 and the recent Referendum on the Voting system, all polling stations throughout the district have been used in each of the last three years. Returning officer Ian Willett has no plans to move any of the current polling stations. Any comments or observations should be emailed to [email protected] or made in writing to The Elections Team, Epping Forest District Council, Civic Offices, High Street, Epping, CM16 4BZ by June 25.

Crews tackle flat blaze 29th May 2011

FIREFIGHTERS have spent about half-an-hour dealing with a flat fire in Chigwell. Two crews, from Loughton and Hainault, were called to the first-floor property in Trotwood at 4am today (Sunday). The whole of the property was smoke logged and crews wore two sets of breathing apparatus and used one hose reel to extinguish the fire by 4.30am. A high pressure fan was used to clear the smoke from the flat.

Railway features on music video 29th May 2011

THE Epping Ongar Railway has been used in the filming of a music video for Polydor Record’s latest signing, Temple Cloud’s debut single. The video features the group walking along stretches of track and also in one of the railway carriages. The music has also featured in the current KFC summer advert.

Schools to perform at Town Show 28th May 2011

A HOST of free entertainment will be provided at the Epping Town Show on Sunday, June 19. The event, organised by Epping Town Council. is being held at the Stonards Hill recreation ground, Epping, between noon and 5pm. Building on previous shows, this year there will be circus performers, a band, tennis tournament, birds of prey, lorries, games and stalls. There will also be a funfair, donkey rides, hog roast, barbecue and beer tent as well as arena performances by a local karate club, Ivy Chimneys Primary School and Coopersale Hall School as well as two local performing arts schools.

The St John’s School band will also be performing. Free parking will be available on the recreation ground with vehicle access via Tidy’s Lane.

Men freed after road crash 27th May 2011

TWO men had to be freed by firefighters following a road crash in Chigwell. Two Loughton fire crews were called to Fencepiece Road shortly after 8.30pm last night (Thursday) and took about half-an-hour releasing the men from the wreckage.

Man arrested after three hurt in crash 26th May 2011

THREE people have been injured in a two-vehicle collision on the B1393 at Thornwood. Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident which happened on Epping Road, shortly after 1pm today (Thursday). A silver Citroen Xsara Picasso estate and a silver Vauxhall Vectra estate collided at the junction with Rye Hill Road. The injured were all in the Citroen. They were taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow. The road was closed in both directions as emergency services dealt with the incident. Anyone who witnessed the crash should contact Chigwell Road Policing unit on 0300 333 4444. A 48-year-old man, from Harlow, has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and careless driving in connection with the incident.

Polo day to attract big names 26th May 2011

SKYDIVERS and the 80s pop group Kid Creole and the Coconuts will be among the attractions at this year's Duke of Essex Polo Trophy event at Gaynes Park, Epping. The main event will be held on Saturday July 9, and for the first time there will be an additional day - Thursday, July 7. Now in its sixth year the Duke of Essex Polo has become a well-known event attracting big crowds and a host of celebrities, including Rod Stewart, Penny Lancaster, Pixie Lott, Katie Price, Diversity, Teddy Sheringham, Stacey Solomon and Caprice. Various packages are on offer with the VIP Dukes and Players marquees providing all the excitement of the polo match with the glamour of a high end hospitality event. Runners sought for 10k fun run 26th May 2011

RUNNERS can register for the High Ongar 10k charity run on July 3. Registration will take place between 9am and 10:30am at High Ongar Village Hall, Mill Lane with the race starting at 11am. The 6.2-mile course covers scenic private farm tracks and also crosses the Second World War Willingale Airfield and All Saints’ Church, Norton Mandeville. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each age category - the leading men’s and ladies’ runners, the fastest 15 to 18-year-old, the super-vet and the first men’s and ladies’ teams home. The presentations will take place at the village hall at about 12.15pm. Refreshments wll be available for runners and supporters. Last year's race attracted about 200 runners and a limit will be applied to avoid overcrowding, so book early to avoid disappointment. MS branch celebrates success 26th May 2011

A REPORT on the past year was given to more than 70 people who attended the annual meeting of the East Herts and West Essex branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Retiring chairman Mark Gammage spoke of a number of achievements in the year particularly the enlargement of the MS Support Team giving assistance to the MS community. It is estimated there are more than 1,000 people with MS in the area. Additionally the branch had been working hard to provide supplementary specialist-led physiotherapy and exercise for people with MS and it is anticipated this should become available within a month or two.

The branch donated £8,000 to the MS National Centre for its programme of research into MS. This money is surplus to the funds the branch has raised to provide its own programme of services. The cheque was received by MS Society Operations Department staff member Mary Lowthian, Guest speaker at the meeting at Hatfield Heath Village Hall was consultant neurologist, Dr Mohammed Sharief, from Colchester Hospital who spoke about ‘Emerging Treatments for MS’ detailing the prospects of a future cure and eventual prevention of this debilitating neurological condition. He feels that having spent 25 years in his work with MS this is the most promising time he has experienced and that research is rapidly coming closer to finding a cure. Branch vice-chairman Peter ‘Snowy’ Evans, and his wife, Maggie, who is also a branch committee member, were surprised when Mr Gammage presented them each with the society’s merit award for exceptional service, the ‘Shining Star’ award. Mr Gammage thanked all the branch’s volunteers who work tirelessly to raise funds and support those affected by MS. Former leader bows out 24th May 2011

COUNCILLOR Di Collins has officially handed over the leadership of Epping Forest District Council. Council chairman Ken Angold-Stephens paid tribute to Mrs Collins, who lost a leadership vote to Chigwell Village councillor Lesley Wagland, describing her as "tireless and hardworking". Mrs Collins, who is also chairman of the Board of Governors at Epping Forest College, received cross-party tributes for her hard work, particularly with regards to education and healthcare. Former deputy leader Chris Whitbread said Mrs Collins had "done what's right for the people of Epping Forest" adding: "That's what has always been behind Di's leadership." New council leader Lesley Wagland said Mrs Collins - who received a standing ovation at tonight's council meeting - had worked tirelessly and achieved a huge amount during her five years as leader. Mrs Collins, who said she had been particularly interested in the young people of the district, told councillors: "I am proud to leave the council in good order." She thanked all the former cabinet members for their help and support. "I really appreciate what we have done and worked together as a team. We have to move forward now."

New chairman accepts position 24th May 2011

LOUGHTON Residents Association councillor Ken Angold-Stephens has been elected as the new chairman of Epping Forest District Council. Mr Angold-Stephens has been a Loughton Roding ward district councillor for seven years. Councillor Caroline Pond, who nominated Mr Angold-Stephens, described him as "a very conscientious and active" ward counciillor. Mr Angold-Stephens was Loughton mayor in 2009-10 and vice-chairman of the district council's overview and scrutiny committee. He is Loughton Residents Association's deputy group leader. Mr Angold-Stephens has chosen St Clare Hospice and Epping Forest Home-Start as his charities for the year. Lambourne councillor Brian Rolfe has been elected as deputy chairman.

Chairman reflects on "tremendous" year 24th May 2011

OUTGOING Epping Forest District Council chairman Anne Grigg has reflected on her "tremendous" year. Before handing over the chain of office to councillor Ken Angold-Stephens, Mrs Grigg highlighted several events during her year in office - including white water rafting at the Olympic venue at Waltham Cross and the annual St George's Day parade at Windsor Castle. But it was the nativity play performed by children at the Chigwell Riding Trust which has special memories. She said: "There is no doubt that attending Chigwell Riding Trust at Christmas time has left a lasting impression upon me." Mrs Grigg said it had been a "tremendous" year adding that it had been "an honour, pleasure and privilege" to have represented the district. Mrs Grigg announced that her fundraising during her year in office had raised £8,500.

Council welcomes new members 24th May 2011

THE five new district councillors have been officially welcomed onto the council. Councillors Ken Avey, Paul Keska, Ann Mitchell and Gary Waller were presented with their declaration of acceptance of office certificates by council chairman Anne Grigg. Epping Lindsey and Thornwood Common councillor Sarah Packford was not at the meeting.

Council pays tribute to former chairman 24th May 2011

DISTRICT councillors have observed a minute's silence in memory of former council chairman Bob O'Malley. Mr O'Malley represented the Loughton South and Loughton Forest wards from 1974 until 1982 and was chairman of the council in 1978-79. Mr O'Malley was also a member of the former Chigwell Urban District Council and its chairman in 1972-73. Loughton councillor Stephen Murray, paying tribute to Mr O'Malley, and his wife, Vera, said: "While I can't say that on any occasion that I agreed with him I always realised that his heart was always in the right place."

Two young representatives from WAY 2000 were given a grant of £500 to encourage reading whilst other grants to 3rd Waltham Abbey Scouts Group and Cruse Bereavement Care were used for running costs of the groups. Grants were also awarded to King Harold Day, Ninefields Residents Panel and Waltham Abbey Neighbourhood Action Panel. Council leader Stuart Pryde told the meeting that the council also supported local groups with "in kind" support, such as discounted venue hire. Mr Pryde said: "We are delighted to be able to support these local groups and it is a pleasure for the town council to present them in person."

Saturday sale raises £951 23rd May 2011

A SALE at the Budworth Hall, Ongar, on Saturday raised £951.14 for two local organisations. The proceeds will be split between the Ongar Club for Disabled and the Clara Stewart Senior Citizens Club. Stalls were selling plants and homemade cakes, handmade cards, books and bric-a-brac. There was also a tombola, raffle and refreshments.

Firefighter made Freeman of Waltham Abbey 23rd May 2011

A FIREFIGHTER who helped save the lives of six people trapped in a blazing building has been made an honorary Freeman of Waltham Abbey. Andrew Walton, who lives in the town and serves with the London Fire Brigade, is well known to the town through his links with the Chingford Morris Men. He received the honour at a special meeting of Waltham Abbey Town Council when the citation was read by mayor Ricki Gadsby. The citation states: "We, the Mayor and Members of the Town Council of Waltham Abbey, on behalf of the residents of the said Town, hereby confer the honorary Freedom of the Town of Waltham Abbey upon Andrew Walton in recognition of his bravery when, with other firefighters, he saved six people trapped in a burning building." Mr Walton was presented with his award in the council chamber at the town hall, Highbridge Street, when he was accompanied by his wife, Jan, and their three sons. Mr Walton said: "I am delighted and privileged to be honoured by the town this way." The framed citation, sealed with the common seal of the town council, has been signed by the mayor, and the Town Clerk, Kathryn Richmond.

Car runs over man sleeping in field 23rd May 2011

A 27-YEAR-OLD Ongar man suffered a fractured vertebrae and serious head cut when he was run over by a car which rolled down a hill as he slept in a field. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident which happened in Lordship Road, near Writtle College, Writtle, on Saturday (May 21). A police spokesman said it appears a group of people were leaving a music event at the college when the incident happened at about 8am. Police did arrest two men - aged 21, from Chelmsford, and aged 20, from Leigh - who have been released on bail however police inquiries have indicated that the incident is likely to be treated as an accident. Any witnesses or anyone who was at the location overnight and has any information should ring detectives at Braintree Police Station on 0300 333 4444.

Flower festival raises £2,750 23rd May 2011

THE May Fayre and flower festival at St Martin's Church, Ongar, raised £2,750 which will be shared with the Help for Heroes charity. Gill Richardson, chair of the church’s fundraising committee, said: "We should like to thank everyone including all our volunteers and visitors for making the event such a success on the Saturday and Sunday." Diane Stratton, who led the flower arrangers, said: "We are very grateful to the all the local shops, businesses and farms who allowed us space in and outside their properties to advertise the event and the local media and David Jackman, of Everything Epping Forest, who gave us considerable help with our publicity. "But above all we should like to say a huge thank you to our sponsors who gave so generously and without whom the event would not have been possible." MP fights for lower fuel prices 23rd May 2011

NAZEING, Roydon and Sheering MP Robert Halfon is calling for a backbench Parliamentary debate on the cost of fuel. He has also been asked by FairFuelUK to head up a new cross-party committee in the House of Commons on the issue as part of his new role as Parliamentary Champion of the Fair Fuel Campaign. Mr Halfon has already met with representatives from the FairFuelUK Campaign, including the Freight Transport Association and Road Haulage Association, and will now raise the issue with big energy companies and the Government. Mr Halfon said: "I will be seeking an explanation as to why the pump price of fuel has hardly dropped despite the significant fall in oil prices." He added: "We urgently need transparency. The oil price is falling but hard-pressed British motorists are still paying inflated prices at the pump. "That's why I will be writing today to all the major energy companies, to ask if they will lower their prices across the country." FairFuelUK spokesman Peter Carroll has welcomed Mr Halfon's involvement in the campaign. He said: "This is a tremendous step forward in the fight for a fair price for fuel. "We are pleased Robert Halfon is prepared to add his voice to our campaign. "We are even more delighted at his support for the formation of an all-party group to endorse the fact that fuel prices and fuel duty stay high on the political agenda."

St Clare - which serves communities from Harlow, Loughton in the south to Saffron Walden in the north and from Bishop's Stortford in the west to Great Dunmow in the east - is governed by a panel of unpaid trustees who are selected according to their individual skills and experience, the relevance of these to St Clare's activities and their ability to challenge and support their counterparts on the Board. The directors, under a chief executive officer, are responsible for the day-to-day management of the hospice and its services. The trustees monitor the management of the hospice through a number of governance committees each covering a separate directorate or activity of the hospice (for example building, clinical, finance etc). The committees, chaired by appropriately experienced trustees, usually consist of two or three trustees and the lead executive in the discipline being monitored. The governance committees meet once, sometimes twice, a quarter during office hours and report to the Trustee Board which normally meets quarterly outside office hours. Currently vacancies and succession planning require new trustees especially with financial, fundraising, medical or retailing backgrounds. American flavour to airfield fun day 22nd May 2011

THE 70th anniversary of the American Eagle Squadrons at North Weald will be marked with a special fun day and fly -in. The American Eagles event on Sunday, June 5, will feature a BBMF Spitfire, Mustangs, military vehicles, classic American cars, re-enactors and entertainers. The event (11am-4.30pm) is in aid of the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust and the Help for Heroes charity. Organisers are promising something for everyone. For plane enthusiasts there will be a flypast from a RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire and Mustangs, plus a large selection of aircraft parked to view close up. Classic American cars, motorbikes and military vehicles will be on show along with American, British and German re-enactors with weapons and equipment, including 'Dad’s Army' Home Guards. Trophies will be awarded to the best attending American car, bike and re-enactment group. The US Air Force are supporting the day by providing an explosive ordnance disposal display, military working dogs display and an Honour Guard. Continuing the American theme, entertainment will be provided by the Essex Blades American Football Team along with their cheerleaders, the Essex Flames. There will also be entertainment from Samurai warriors, a dance troupe from Sky 1’s 'Just Dance' and dog agility shows. Youngsters can enjoy fairground rides, a bouncy castle, children’s horse riding and children’s entertainers. There will also be local community stalls, including Guide Dogs for the Blind and Owls R Us, refreshments and a licensed bar. The gates open at 11am with the arena displays from noon. Regional honours for Haslers 21st May 2011

LOUGHTON-based chartered accountancy practice Haslers has been named as the region’s Accountancy Firm of the Year. The firm saw off fierce competition to scoop the prestigious accolade at this year’s Essex Accountancy and Business Awards, organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). The Haslers team received their award at Orsett Hall Hotel, Orsett, on Wednesday. Judges were particularly impressed with the way Haslers had diversified to offer specialist accountancy services to niche markets such as the construction industry, care homes, pharmaceutical companies and veterinary practices. The firm did this by undertaking a detailed research project to evaluate the skills and expertise of its team to see which new markets it could expand into. Laurence Jacobs, deputy chairman of the firm, said: “I am absolutely delighted we have won this award which is a testament to the hard work of everyone at Haslers. “We always strive to ensure we go that one step further for our clients, so to have our efforts recognised in this way is a fantastic achievement.” The award is the latest in a long line of accolades for Haslers at regional and national level..

Minister meets council representatives 20th May 2011

COUNCILLORS from local town and parish councils were among those invited to an afternoon seminar with Local Government and Communities Minister Eric Pickles. The Brentwood and Ongar MP was in Dunmow this afternoon as a guest of the Essex Association of Local Councils (EALC). The EALC's executive committee with a number of local councils had been given the chance to submit questions to put to Mr Pickles with the questions selected covering a range of issues. Mr Pickles was introduced by Essex Association of Local Councils' vice-chairman and Ongar town councillor Sheila Jackman. The meeting was chaired by Essex Association of Local Councils' chairman John Buchanan. Councillor Peter Bowditch, from Billericay Town Council, sought the Minister’s views on the Localism Bill and The Big Society when he asked a question regarding the grant funding that will be made available to help local councils meet the cost of devolved services. Councillor Tilly Pink, from Wickham Bishops Parish Council, sought an explanation from Mr Pickles on how standards in local government will be regulated once Standards Committees cease to exist. Other topics included the Power of General Competence, the Community Right to Build and New Homes Bonus and retrospective planning permissions. Councillor David McPherson-Davis, from Ramsden Crays Parish Council, raised the issue of retrospective planning applications. Mr Buchanan said: “We were delighted to welcome Eric Pickles and to have an opportunity to put questions to him covering a range of local government issues.”

MP praises housing development 20th May 2011

BRENTWOOD and Ongar MP Eric Pickles has praised a new housing scheme built in Abbess Roding to provide homes for local people. Mr Pickles officially opened Hastoe Housing Association's Bass Cottages development, in School Lane - four homes for rent and two for shared ownership. The development was made possible after the site was made available by local farmer Robert Osborn who was among the guests at this morning's opening ceremony. The properties are named after the well-known Bass family who have made major contributions to the parish over many years. Mr Pickles, who is also the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, cut a ribbon to declare the development officially open. He said: "You (Hastoe) can take great pride in the way it has fitted into the community - and enhanced it." Hastoe became involved in the project when Abbess, Beauchamp and Berners Roding Parish Council raised the issue of the lack of affordable housing in the parish. A housing needs survey confirmed that local people were in need of such accommodation. The homes, completed in January, feature a range of environmental features including ground source heat pumps. The scheme cost £832,000 with funding of £250,000 provided by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Hospice prepares for Royal visit 20th May 2011

ST Clare Hospice is gearing up to welcome a Royal visitor next month. It has been announced that the Countess of Wessex will visit the Hastingwood hospice on Wednesday, June 8. Her visit is one of three engagements that she has in Essex that day. The Countess will also be attending a Citizenship Ceremony at Braintree Town Hall and visiting the Brainwave charity - of which she is president - in Witham.

Man wanted over burglary and car crash 20th May 2011

A MAN believed to have contacts in the Ongar area is wanted by police. Officers are keen to speak to Oliver Sheppard in relation to a burglary in Chapman Road, Clacton, on Saturday, April 23. A Mini Cooper car was stolen from the address between midnight and 6am before crashing into a local pub. Cash and credit cards, clothing, sunglasses and a sat nav were also stolen. Sheppard, 22, is also wanted on recall to prison for failing to comply with the terms of his licence. Sheppard is well known in the Clacton area and also has links to Colchester, St Osyth and, more recently, Ongar. A police spokesman said he is thought to currently be in Colchester but may well visit St Osyth and Ongar regularly. District council set for new -look cabinet 19th May 2011

CHANGES have been made to the structure of the district council's cabinet. Three of the previous portfolios - operational planning and transport, performance management, and legal and estates - have been scrapped and replaced with planning and technology and support services. New council leader Lesley Wagland, who will take on both the leader's portfolio and the legal and estates work, is one of seven new cabinet members on the eight-member body. Only councillor Penny Smith keeps her place from the last council year. Meanwhile, there is a cabinet return for councillors John Knapman (environment - in place of councillor Mary Sartin) and Maggie McEwen (housing - in place of councillor Dave Stallan). The changes follow the Tory group's vote on the night of the local election count to remove councillor Di Collins as leader. Councillor John Philip replaces deputy leader Chris Whitbread who stood down following the leadership vote. The new cabinet is: leader and legal, Lesley Wagland; finance and economic development, Gagan Mohindra; leisure and wellbeing, Ricki Gadsby; environment, John Knapman; housing, Maggie McEwen; safer and greener, Penny Smith; planning and technology, John Philip; and support services, John Wyatt.

Fire crews rescue fallen donkey 19th May 2011

FIREFIGHTERS came to the rescue of a rare French breed donkey after it fell in its stable. Crews from Loughton and Harlow, and the Essex Fire and Rescue Service's large animal rescue unit, were called to Lippitts Hill, High Beach, at about 9.45pm last night (Wednesday). They took about two hours using the unit's heavy lifting equipment to get the animal back onto its feet. Assistant Divisional Officer Greg Keys said: "The donkey has a problem with its legs which have grown too fast for its muscles so is in calipers. When it sits down it can't get

up again. "We managed to carry it out of the stable by hand and then used the crane on the Animal Rescue Unit to lift it back on its feet." He added: "When we left the donkey was standing up and it seemed fine to us. We were glad to get the poor thing standing."

Seven vehicles damaged in one night 18th May 2011

SEVEN vehicles parked in Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill have been broken into on the same night. The vehicles were targeted between 5pm on Monday (May 16) and 8.30am yesterday (Tuesday). In Lechmere Avenue, Chigwell, the rear nearside window of a white Citroen Picasso Xzra was smashed while a black Citroen Saxo had its front and rear offside windows smashed. The front nearside window of a black Mitsubishi Colt was also smashed. In Buckhurst Way, Buckhurst Hill, a green Land Rover Freelander's nearside rear and quarter light windows were smashed. In Lyndhurst Rise, Chigwell, the driver's window of a blue Renault Clio was smashed causing £80 and in High Road, Chigwell, a blue Peugeot 307 was found to have a hole in the front offside window. Nothing was stolen in any of the incidents. PC Kerry Long said: "This was senseless, mindless damage and we are keen to bring the persons responsible to justice. We are appealing for anyone who may have heard or saw anything to contact us." District misses out on Olympic torch 18th May 2011

DESPITE being just yards from one of the London 2012 Olympic venues, the district will not be hosting the Olympic torch for an overnight stop ahead of next summer's Games. In the list of locations announced this morning, the closest overnight stop to Epping Forest will be Chelmsford where the torch will be on Friday, July 6 next year - for day 51 of its 70-day relay to every nation and region in the UK before arriving at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. The torch will be in Waltham Forest on day 68 - Saturday, July 21. The Epping Forest district, whose border is just yards from the white water canoeing venue between Waltham Abbey and Waltham Cross, could still be welcoming the torch as additional locations and stop -offs for the relay will be announced later this year.

Town to get new sign 18th May 2011

COSTINGS and designs are to be obtained to replace Epping's two town signs. Councillors will also look into the possibility of only having one sign. There are currently two - one on the town green and the other by the High Street-Tower Road junction. Town clerk Bob Whittome told councillors the signs have lasted for about 12 years with some refurbishment work carried out about four years ago. He added that the oak posts also need replacing. Deputy mayor Jon Whitehouse suggested there was only a need for one sign in the town - and the number of signs and the location will be debated once estimates and designs have been obtained. One option is a plywood sign, similar to the existing, but some councillors said an alternative material may be beneficial. Epping Art Society is to be asked to suggest a design.

Work planned for cemetery 18th May 2011

A TREE purchase scheme is being proposed by Epping Town Council as it looks to replace the avenue of trees at Epping Cemetery. The council is planning to replace the avenue of trees leading to the chapel with trees purchased by individuals in memory of loved ones. Work is also proposed to renew some of the cemetery paths.

New mayor reveals 'wish list' 18th May 2011

NEWLY-elected Epping mayor Ken Avey has revealed a three-pronged 'wish list' for his year in office. Mr Avey, who was also mayor in 2004-05, has called for improvements to the piazza and parking area near Barclays Bank in the High Street, and wants to see a "green wedge" created on part of the former infants school site in St John's Road to compensate the town for the green belt land which will be lost with the building of the new St John's School. Mr Avey also wants the traffic flow in Epping High Road which will increase when the new school access is created to be "seriously looked into again to prevent queues even longer than occur (in the High Road) at the moment". Mr Avey added: "If these three problems are carried out in some form it will make my year." Liberal Democrat councillor Jon Whitehouse was elected deputy mayor.

FIRE crews have cut free two women following a three vehicle crash on St Leonards Road, Nazeing. Firefighters from Waltham Abbey and Harlow were called out shortly after 12.30pm today and took about 45 minutes to deal with the incident.

There is a simple registration process for people to access the vouchers, either by completing an application card, or by registering online on the town council website (follow the WASP), and an equally simple system for businesses to participate. Town council leader Stuart Pryde said: "We are very excited with the launch of the WASP scheme and are sure that it will be a successful as we anticipate. "One of the great things about the scheme is its simplicity. "Traders email us there offers and we automatically email them to the members. "We hope the membership builds very quickly and that the traders of Waltham Abbey see an immediate response." Gavin Ward, chairman of the Waltham Abbey Business Association, said: "An initiative like this between local business and the town council is a great way of moving the trade in Waltham abbey forward and should benefit both business and shoppers alike." The launch will take place in Market Square during the Saturday market.

Parish council welcomes library hours 17th May 2011

NORTH Weald Parish Council has welcomed new library opening hours which will see the village library remain open six days a week. The only changes for the High Road library are on Tuesdays and Saturdays. When the new opening hours are introduced from Monday, July 4, instead of being open from 1pm until 7pm on a Tuesday the hours will be 2pm until 5pm while Saturday opening hours will be 9am until 1pm instead of 9am until 5pm. Opening times at libraries across Essex were the subject of a period of public consultation. North Weald Bassett Parish Council will continue to provide a library service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Parish council clerk Sue DeLuca said: "We are very pleased to see local peoples' views being taken into consideration and that the library will remain open on a Thursday and indeed will continue to give a service to local people six days a week with the help of the parish council. "We are so pleased members of Essex County Council listened to what local people wanted." The library service received more than 27,000 responses to the public consultation. County councillor Jeremy Lucas, cabinet member for environment and culture, said: "I would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond to the consultation. " I am pleased we have been able to honour the will of the respondents. "We are still keen to work with other public sector organisations or community groups who may have suggestions for funding or in kind support which may enable us to keep libraries open for longer. "We continue to welcome any suggestions of this type." Changes to some mobile library routes also come into effect from July 4. Church marks anniversary weekend 17th May 2011

GUEST speaker Rev Dr David Wilkinson combined astrophysics with theology and faith at Loughton Methodist Church which celebrated its anniversary weekend with talks on ‘Exploring the Big Questions’. Methodist Minister Professor David Wilkinson is Principal of St John’s College at Durham University and a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s ‘Thought for the Day’. A Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society his current work at Durham University involves the relationship of the Christian faith to contemporary culture and science in particular. A leading voice in world Methodism, Professor Wilkinson has been a keynote speaker at the World Methodist Conference and a member of the World Methodist Council Executive Committee and World Methodist Evangelism. Professor Wilkinson is also a prolific author and travels widely to speak and broadcast on the relationship of science and faith. Talking to a packed church on the subject of 'The Big Bang, Stephen Hawking and God' he explored some of the current trends within theoretical astrophysics and how as a Christian he relates them to faith. As he reflected on how the Big Bang impacted on Christianity, Professor Wilkinson said: "I do not see that there is inherent conflict between science and religion. I believe science offers a surer path to God than religion. "Science is the way God created the universe and gave it form and structure." Professor Wilkinson’s son Adam, 17, spoke to the congregation during Sunday’s anniversary service. Adam is following in his father’s footsteps and becoming a lay preacher. He said: "I became a Christian when I was ten after hearing my mum speak at Easter People. "I have grown up listening to dad’s talks and although the subject matter could be contentious I have never seen them in opposition to each other." Loughton Methodist Church minister Rev Tony Morling and Professor Wilkinson have been life long friends. He said "This was a stimulating and exciting event that enriched us all. It is vital that Christians both contribute and receive from engaging with the big intellectual issues of the day." Professor Wilkinson said "This is my first visit to Tony’s church and I am thrilled to see that it has welcome, warmth and a willingness to engage with serious questions at depth. That for me is a sign of a growing and spiritual Church." Peter Moles, senior steward at the church, said: "As well as his speaking and communication gifts, David’s humility and sincerity shone out. "I hope and pray that as we ponder on some of the wisdom that David shared, we will be led to grow and that those of us who may not have previously considered how God and the universe relates to them and their lives may feel a desire to seek further, whether at LMC or elsewhere. "It was a weekend to remember and cherish."

Chance for over -50s to get active 17th May 2011

PEOPLE in the district aged over 50 can find out more about special physical activity and health eating sessions being held locally. An open day is being held at Thomas Willingale School, The Broadway, Debden, on Monday (May 23) as part of the Active Health project co-ordinated by development officer David Hogg who is also part of Epping Forest District Council's Sports and Health Development team. The project is funded by Age UK via the Big Lottery as a result of a successful application which has seen £153,886 allocated to the project over four years. Harlow and Uttlesford district councils, NHS West Essex, voluntary organisations and groups, sheltered housing accommodations, local community groups and schools. The aim is improve the health and wellbeing of older people and allowing them to become more physically active and involved in the community. A number of events and fitness opportunities have been organised ranging from exercise classes for the older generation, Nintendo Wii sessions, allotments, walks and nutrition talks. Active Health is holding two sessions on Monday - between 9.15am and 11.15am and from 1.30pm until 3.30pm - offering visitors a mini taster session of the activities available. The day will also promote the recent allotments installed at the school by Active Health which hopes to recruit some of the pupils' grandparents to give up their time and knowledge to help the youngsters start growing vegetables on a weekly basis. Four raised beds and four tractor tyres have been installed and the pupils are keen to get started. Mr Hogg said: "It has been great working with the pupils. They have learnt how physically demanding it is to start up an allotment like this. The pupils have been a pleasure to work with. "It was tremendous to see the excitement in their faces when I told them their grandparents can come into school to help them maintain the allotment. "Looking after an allotment is a great way to keep fit and eat healthy and to see the older generation helping the younger generation working together, will be excellent." Two hurt in road crash 17th May 2011

TWO people were injured when a car crashed into a bollard outside the Plough pub, Sewardstone Road, Waltham Abbey. Two fire crews - from Waltham Abbey and Loughton - were called to the scene at about 6.25pm last night. A fire service spokesman said: "No one was trapped. Fire crews administered first aid to two casualties." Firefighters took about 20 minutes to deal with the incident.

Fundraising talk to Probus club 15th May 2011

PROFESSIONAL fundraiser Keith Wendon was the guest speaker at the May meeting of the Epping Probus Club. Mr Wendon had worked previously in the City of London, was member of Loughton Probus Club and also West Essex Ramblers. He explained that he had become redundant after a long career in the City. He then found himself in a new occupation of charity fund raising for hospitals, particularly the John Grooms Hospital, St Mary’s Paddington, the Whittington Hospital and the Royal Marsden. He stressed the importance of celebrity involvement in these activities which could boost charitable donations considerably. Past celebrities were not, necessarily, always a good draw but pop stars were, although their fees and expenses were invariably very high. The support of Royalty was invaluable and a number of the Royals were patrons of various charities. Their presence could achieve remarkable results and he cited a dinner at London’s Guildhall, attended by Diana when Princess of Wales, where tickets cost £100 plus which, for those days, was substantial. Sports personalities were very popular and a variety of public figures were also a draw. Many were very good speakers, and a well known publicist had given his services to help with the Royal Marsden Hospital. Mr Wendon related a number of amusing incidents involving celebrities and their associated fund raising activities, and concluded by saying that his new career was a most rewording experience especially at the Royal Marsden where he had now spent a happy six years. Runner completes 14th marathon 15th May 2011

CHARITABLE accountant Lawrence Shafier has raised £2,800 for the Teenage Cancer Trust after completing at his ninth London Marathon. Lawrence, a partner at Loughton-based chartered accountancy firm Haslers, was among the 36,500 runners who took part in the Virgin London Marathon last month. It was his fourteenth marathon to date and followed hot on the heels of his participation in a marathon in Amsterdam. Lawrence, 47, said: "There was enormous support from the largest number of spectators recorded. I decided to relax and enjoy the race. "Having recently participated in a marathon in Amsterdam with 8,000 other runners, it felt really good to run with almost 37,000 others on home ground this time. "I ran for Teenage Cancer Trust and this year I’ve managed to raise over £2,800 for the cause."

Researcher appeals over WWII veteran 15th May 2011

A RESEARCHER is appealing for information about a Second World War veteran who lived in the Epping Forest area. Edmond Trevelyan Lockett was born on August 10, 1914, and died in January, 1997 in Epping Forest. His mother's maiden name was Hicks and she came from Chorlton, Lancashire. Researcher Marco Soggetto said: "I would like to contact the Lockett family for historic aims. In 2009, after years spent following voices and legends, I found the wreck of a British bomber, crashed late November 1943 on the Italian Western Alps. "I was also able, or lucky enough, to identify both the plane and its crew, describing my search and the story of its last flight in my last book "During the research for this work I also found a 1945 pamphlet from a priest who, during the war, fought as partisan on the mountains. "He also helped several Allied former prisoners escape from the Italian camps in their 'freedom trails' towards the Swiss border. "In this old essay I found several names, misspelt because the priest did not know English, in 1945. "One of these names was Edmond Trevelyan Lockett." Mr Soggetto is trying to contact his families in England, New Zealand and Australia.

Towns and cities depicted in flowers 14th May 2011

TOWNS and cities are featured in an array of flower displays on show at St Martin's Church, Ongar. The May Fayre and Flower Festival continues tomorrow (Sunday). In addition to the flower arrangements there are a host of stalls - including a raffle and tombola - in the churchyard and a wide selection of homemade refreshments available. Proceeds from the event are being split between the church and the charity Help for Heroes. A speaker from the charity will be speaking at tomorrow's 10,30am service.

Plans unveiled for new business park 13th May 2011

AMBITIOUS plans to develop the Fyfield Business and Research Park have been unveiled. The outline plans submitted by Fyfield Joint Venture propose the redevelopment of the Fyfield Road site - formerly the May and Baker research site - in three phases. The scheme would involve the removal of all the existing building except two office buildings, a grade II stable block and a creche and an existing hardcourt recreation area and changing facilities. The redevelopment would see 12 one and two-storey office buildings equating to a gross external area of 17,071 square metres, the creation of a new site access which would include a roundabout off Fyfield Road. A new cricket pitch and additional amenity is proposed along with comprehensive landscaping including new trees, shrubs and hedges. The plans include a total of 521 car parking spaces and 234 cycle parking spaces.

Town welcomes new mayor 13th May 2011

LOUGHTON Town Council has elected councillor Caroline Pond as the new town mayor. Outgoing mayor David Wixley thanked councillors and officers for their support during his term of office. He reported how much he had enjoyed his year particularly meeting people in the community. Mr Wixley had attended more than 60 engagements and his charity fun run in April raised £510 for the Dream Factory charity. Councillors paid tribute to Mr Wixley’s hard work during the last 12 months. They described him as carrying out the role of town mayor with a sense of professionalism and showing joy and pride in holding office. They also commented on how he had discharged his office to its full and was someone who really enjoyed representing the town of Loughton. Mrs Pond also thanked Mr Wixley for his conscientiousness and acknowledged the way he had chaired meetings with authority and firmness when required but also with humour. Mrs Pond picked up her new role without delay by attending the Jack Petchey Speak-Out Challenge at Debden Park High School on Thursday evening. Councillor Stephen Pewsey, former chairman of the council’s resources and general services committee was elected as deputy mayor. Mrs Pond, who represents the St John’s Ward at both parish and district level, was chairman of Epping Forest District Council in 2007 -08.

A QUIZ has raised £350 for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust. David Turnbull, from Ongar, devised the logo quiz to support the charity. The quiz winners were Mrs Bunyard, from Ongar, and Mr Neville, from north London. David, 27, is a professional photographer with the RAF and based at Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

Man dies a week after crash 13th May 2011

A 64-YEAR-OLD man who was involved in a collision in Waltham Abbey has died. The man, who lived locally, was driving a blue Renault Clio car which hit the wall of a property in Crooked Mile at 8.15am on May 3. He died at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, on Tuesday. His death is being dealt with by the Hertfordshire coroner and Essex Police will be providing a report for the inquest.

Society prepares for annual meeting 13th May 2011

TWO presentations will be given at the annual meeting of the East Herts and West Essex branch of the MS Society. The meeting, at Hatfield Heath Village Hall on Saturday, May 21 (2pm), coincides with the beginning of National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Week with its theme of ‘Putting MS on the Map’. The guest speaker is Dr Mohammed Sharief, consultant neurologist at Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, who will give a talk entitled ‘Emerging Treatments for MS - What is going on?’ Also present will be Dr Charlie Davison who will be demonstrating the online PEBL Project (Patient Experience / Public Engagement Blog) which is piloting ways of capturing service users' experience and views from the wider community and integrating these into primary care commissioning. Volunteer drivers clock up the miles 13th May 2011

VOLUNTEER drivers with Ongar and Villages Voluntary Care undertook almost 400 journeys totaling 6,410 miles taking people to various appointments in the last financial year. Journeys to hospitals, clinics, optician and dentist appointments occupied most of the 389 journeys with 123 trips (a slight increase on 2009 -10) to St Margaret's Hospital, Epping, and 72 (down from 158 in 2009-10) to Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow. Rev Susan Cooper stood down as chairman, in accordance with the constitution, having served for three years and was replaced by Ann Harries. Roger Roles was re-elected as honorary treasurer and Alan Ashton as honorary secretary. The eight other trustees continue to serve. At the annual general meeting held at the Ongar Social and Sports Club, Love Lane, Ongar, on Thursday the chairman presented her report for the past year. Epping Forest District Council continues to provide grant aid to the organisation. The meeting was followed by a lunch, prepared by Christine Thornton, for the volunteers.

Council leader "surprised and disappointed" 12th May 2011

EPPING Forest District Council leader Di Collins has said she is "surprised and disappointed" at the decision of fellow Tory councillors to drop her as group leader. Mrs Collins was replaced by Chigwell Village councillor Lesley Wagland when a vote was taken at the annual meeting of the Epping Forest Conservative group last Friday evening. As part of the shake-up deputy leader Chris Whitbread has been replaced by Theydon Bois councillor John Philip. Other changes, to the make-up of the council's cabinet positions, are expected to emerge when the annual full council meeting is held on Tuesday, May 24. Mrs Collins remains as council leader until the full council meeting. In a statement, Mrs Collins said: "I am obviously surprised and disappointed by recent events but that’s politics. "I would like to thank the voters of Epping Forest district for repeatedly showing confidence in the leadership which my team had provided to the council, shown by an increase in the number of Conservative councillors each and every year since I took over in 2005, up to and including last week. "I would like to pay tribute to my experienced cabinet colleagues, many of whom are also returning to the backbenches. They have worked tirelessly and achieved a great deal, leaving the council in a strong financial position with quality services." Mrs Collins added: "Despite the challenges that we face, the new leader has firm foundations on which to build and protect the services our residents care about whilst ensuring we remain a low council tax authority."

Hospice to sell donated goods online 12th May 2011

ST Clare Hospice is to sell some of the items donated to its shops online using Ebay and Amazon. The hospice currently sends valuable items to auction while items not up to standard for sale through the shops get sold on for recycling where ever possible. The charity's retail team are now hoping to establish another method of selling donated goods by offering them for online through sites such as Ebay and Amazon. The hospice's retail sales manager, Louise Hamilton, said: "There is huge potential for us to generate more income for the hospice by selling certain items online. "With this in mind we ’ve managed to allocate some office space and a recycled computer to start the operation but we need volunteers with IT ‘know how’ to set up and run our Ebay and Amazon shops." Initially Louise is looking for a volunteer to take on the role of online team leader who can commit four to eight hours a week to get the project up and running. Then a small team of volunteers will be recruited to work alongside the team leader to monitor sales, package and post orders. Louise added: "We’re really excited about the potential of this project but unless we have volunteers with the right skills to help us we won’t be able to get it off the ground." Thieves target village church 11th May 2011

A CHEST, crucifixes and oak chairs have been stolen from St Nicholas Church, Fyfield. Entry was gained when a rear door at the church, in Willingale Road, was forced between 5pm on Thursday, May 5, and 10.30am on Friday. An 18th century chest with veal wood oak lid and strap hinges with locks, two brass crucifixes - one Victorian with glass studs - a brass Reader inscribed 'In memory of A G Richmond 1902-1976', two brass candlesticks, a solid oak Priest's chair and a solid oak Curate chair were stolen. Investigating officer PC Sharon Holte-Smith said: "This is an extremely upsetting incident that someone would stoop so low to steal from a place of worship. "These items are not only of great monetary value but of great sentimental value. "We are keen to hear from anyone who may have information regarding this incident or if they are offered these items for sale to contact us." Thefts spark police advice 11th May 2011

POLICE are reminding people to lock doors and remove valuable items from view following a spate of thefts. The warning comes after the vehicles were left either unlocked or with goods on display. Between last Saturday and evening and Sunday morning various items were stolen from

a black Audi A4 and a grey VW Touran parked in Traps Hill, Loughton. Keys were taken from the glovebox and Ralph Lauren sweatshirts were stolen from both the rear seats. Also overnight in Little Plucketts Way, Buckhurst Hill, entry was gained to an orange VW Transporter van and £500 was stolen from a central coin box. The same night in Church Lane, Loughton, £200 cash was stolen from a black Honda CRV. On Sunday a disabled parking badge was stolen from a VW Polo parked in Beulah Road, Epping. Epping Inspector Paul Maleary said: "People are enjoying the weather and are just simply not locking their vehicles properly or removing valuable items from display. "One owner left their vehicle insecure for only half-an-hour when they had their sat nav stolen. "People should take notice of our advice. If the worst happens and your vehicle is stolen because you left it insecure you may find your insurance company may not pay out. "You wouldn’t leave over £5,000 sitting on your drive insecure. "Also think of all the hassle there is in reporting the incident, changing locks on doors, the cost of replacing the items or making a claim for damages to the vehicle from simply leaving something on display. It’s just not worth it. "Lock up properly and remove all items from display. "If you notice any suspicious activity around vehicles in your area, please contact us immediately. "We would rather attend and find everything is in order than turn up a day later to find someone has been a victim of theft." Solicitors' firm celebrates anniversaries 11th May 2011

ATTWATERS, the local firm of solicitors, is celebrating both its 110th anniversary and the 80 or so years that it has been established in Loughton. The double anniversary has been marked with a series of events including a ‘birthday party’ at Loughton's Nu-Bar which was attended by many local business people and dignitaries. Despite the tough recessionary environment, Attwaters recently extended the range of services available to individuals and businesses from its Loughton office. Attwaters (then Attwater & Liell) was established in 1901 with offices in City of London (Bishopsgate) and The Broadway, Stratford. The firm moved to Loughton about 80 years ago but, the exact date of the firm's arrival is unclear. Records were not always kept so thoroughly in the pre-Second World War days so the details do not indicate the date of the move. The firm believes the date to be sometime in 1931, the year Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years in Alcatraz. Partner and Head of the Family Division, Joyti Henchie, said: "The recent expansion of our presence in the Loughton area means that more Partners and other specialists working in a wider variety of legal areas are now based here, enabling us to provide a broader service to the local community and also take advantage of the excellent public transport links. "We’re all looking forward to celebrating our long history of service and tradition in Loughton, but won’t be icing the birthday cake until we’re sure of our ‘age’! Society begins with The King's Speech 10th May 2011

LOUGHTON Film Society hired the Epping Forest College auditorium for its first film which marked the return of regular screenings in the area after nearly 50 years. The society - which screened The King's Speech - was formally launched by Epping Forest District Council vice-chairman Ken Angold-Stephens. The screening attracted an audience of more than 70 people. The society expects to screen Made in Dagenham in June. The film highlights the famous strike in 1968 which led to the passing of the first Equal Pay Act, a huge milestone in the social history of the UK. The selection of this film is in line with the society's objective of having regular showings of films with a broad based appeal.

Planners back flats plan for pub site 10th May 2011

PLANS to build flats on the site of Bald Hind pub, Chigwell, are being supported by district council planning officers. Central Investment Properties (Chigwell) Ltd wants to build the two and three-bedroom flats, with access off Hainault Road. Planning officers are recommending the scheme be approved subject to the agreement of a legal condition that will see the applicant contribute £20,671 towards education and £100,000 for 'affordable' housing, and also provide raised kerbs at two bus stops in Hainault Road. All householders in Linkside have objected to the application while objections have also been made by two other properties, in Dacre Gardens Chigwell, and Hazelbrouck Gardens, Hainault, fearing the loss of the pub to the community. They say this compounds the harm caused to the local community, the loss of an historic building to the area, and the size of the proposed building. They also claim there is no need for more flats in this part of Chigwell Neither Chigwell Parish Council or Essex County Council, as the highway authority, has voiced any objections. A planning officer's report states: "The loss of the site for a community use or development for affordable housing is remedied by the applicant’s agreement to make a contribution of £100,000 to the provision of affordable housing elsewhere in the district. "The development would generate a need for additional secondary school place provision, which can be secured by a financial contribution of £20,671, which the applicant’s agent has also confirmed the applicant is agreeable to. "On the basis that a contribution towards off-site affordable housing would be received, the principle of the development of the site for an open market residential development is acceptable." The officer adds that "by careful attention to siting, scale and detailed design the proposed development would respect its setting while being a high quality landmark in the locality".

NHS West Essex is holding a meeting to give people the chance to have their say on the future of local health care. The meeting - at the Uttlesford District Council offices, London Road, Saffron Walden - at 7.30pm on Thursday, May 19 - follows a series of four public discussion meetings held across west Essex. NHS West Essex chief executive Sheila Bremner has been asked to join the NHS Future Forum which is a group of representatives from the NHS, local authorities, voluntary sector and patients’ organisations that will oversee a national listening exercise on NHS reforms. Sheila will be attending the meeting to speak about the role of the forum and to listen to the views of those attending. She will then feedback to the forum, and the Prime Minister. Two charged over death crash 10th May 2011

TWO people have been charged in connection with a fatal collision which happened in Stapleford Tawney almost a year ago. The collision happened in Ongar Road, near the Passingford Bridge roundabout, on Sunday, June 13, and led to the death of 38-year-old cyclist Steven Rodway. A 22-year-old man, from Loughton, has been charged with causing death by careless driving and two counts of causing death by driving while uninsured and without a driving licence. A 21-year-old woman has been charged with aiding and abetting the second and third offences faced by the man. They have been bailed to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates Court on June 10. A 46-year-old man arrested at the time has been released from his bail with no further action to be taken.

Tools stolen from van 10th May 2011

POLICE are appealing for information following the theft of tools worth about £2,800 from a van in Loughton. Entry was gained to a white Citreon Belingo van parked in Newmans Lane when a nearside window was forced between 11pm on Friday (May 6) and 1.40pm on Saturday. Investigating officer PC Mark Bazzoni said: "Three tools - a Makita skill saw, a Bosch jig saw and a Makita 14.4 impact driver - are identifiable as they were etched with the wording 'ROBSTA MC'. This crime has really impacted on the victim and his ability to go about his daily work. "I would like to hear from anybody who is aware of the whereabouts of these items or if they are offered them for sale to contact me." EPPING Forest MP Eleanor Laing has praised staff at Holly House Hospital, Buckhurst Hill, after she attended an open day on Sunday. Mrs Laing said: "I was most impressed by the wide range of activities going on. It was a brilliant idea to involve local people in the work of the hospital and to use the occasion to educate us about many aspects of healthcare. "I was pleased to have the opportunity to have my BMI checked, and relieved that it is okay! Three men due in court 9th May 2011

THREE men will appear in court today (Monday) charged with burglary offences following several incidents, including a break-in at Stapleford Abbotts. All three were arrested in First Avenue, Billericay, at about 10am on Friday (May 6), after an attempt was made to gain entry to a property in Foxleigh nearby. Officers from the dog section assisted neighbourhood officers in making the arrests. Ardjan Kordhaku, 19, of Pettits Lane North, Romford, is charged with attempted burglary of the Foxleigh address and burglary of a property in Outwood Common Road, Billericay on May 1 in which electrical items and bank cards were stolen, burglary of a property in The Glens, Stapleford Abbotts, on May 3 in which electrical items and cash were stolen, and burglary of a property in Marlborough Road, Pilgrims Hatch, where electrical items including a camcorder and digital camera as well as jewellery were stolen. Tonin Zefi, 20, of no fixed address, is charged with attempted burglary of the Foxleigh address and burglary of a property in Upland Road, Billericay, on May 1 in which cash and electrical items, including a laptop were stolen. Besnir Dimi, 22, also of no fixed address, is charged with attempted burglary of the Foxleigh address. All will appear before magistrates in Basildon.

Singer prepares to turn back clock 9th May 2011

SINGER Rosemary Squires will be performing at St Mary’s Church, Loughton on Saturday, May 14 (7.30pm) as part of the Loughton Festival. The event will be raising money for the Guide Dogs charity. Rosemary Squires recaptures what many regard as the golden years of popular entertainment. Joined by top musicians, usually her musical director Brian Dee if he is in the country, 'Those were the days' offers popular entertainment for people who like a easy listening music with a hint of jazz. Ms Squires says it is not a tribute show rather a celebration of the great music and entertainers of the post war years, from the sentimentality of the 1940s to the happy music of the 50s and 60s. Rosemary Squires says her ambition was always to become a jazz singer and over the years she has sung with countless performers, including the BBC Concert Orchestra, Ted Heath and John Dankworth. She also had her own TV and radio show and was twice named the most televised female vocalist of the year. Her voice will be remembered for the Fairy Liquid jingle that won her the accolade of 'Queen of the Jingles'. Hospice seeks Peru trekkers 9th May 2011

ST Clare Hospice is seeking people to take part in a fundraising trek in Peru between May 5 and 14 next year. The hospice is organising the Inca Trail trek which is rated amongst the ten best trekking routes on earth and boasts stunning scenery, ancient Inca ruins and diverse ecological zones. The ultimate destination is Machu Picchu - the "Lost City" of the Incas - one of the world’s most fascinating and important archaeological finds. Other highlights include the historical town of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, the Inca site and market town of Pisac, the hot springs of Aguas Calientes and the capital city of Lima. Ben Millard, from Bishop’s Stortford, previously completed the trek in aid of the hospice. He said: "Trekking the Inca Trail was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Every day presented a new challenge and taught me a bit more about myself. I made some wonderful friends and saw some amazing sights. Celebrating six centuries of vicars 8th May 2011

EPPING Team Ministry will be celebrating 632 years of ministry when it dedicates a new Vicar’s Board at St John's Church, Epping. The board features incumbents dating back to the 14th century. The board, donated in memory of Gerald Tyson, will be dedicated by the current vicar, Rev Geoffrey Connor, at a special service today (Sunday). It commemorates 54 past vicars, dating back to 1379, including those who served at the former parish church, All Saints in Epping Upland. Among them are some famous names including Edward Buchmaster, who laid the foundations of the current church in Epping. He was the wealthy son of an aristocratic family of tailors, who made uniforms for servicemen. Also listed are Edward Ovenden in 1955, a relative of the actor Julian Ovenden, and Henry Olivier in1919, believed to be a relative of another famous name, Sir Laurence Olivier. Rev Connor said: "This is a historic occasion. We are glad to have this opportunity to remember these past ministers of Epping who provided Christian service and pastoral care to this community over six centuries. "They played a great role during Epping’s history and contributed this beautiful building to the landscape of Epping which has just been registered by English Heritage as a Grade II* listed building."

Village to mark Legion's 90th anniversary 8th May 2011

VARIOUS events are being held in North Weald to mark the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion. The Bassett Bonanza family fun day will be at North Weald Village Hall, High Road, North Weald, from 11am on Saturday, June 25. Attractions will include a rock climbing experience climbing wall, military stands, visits from the emergency services, fair rides and a decorated wheelbarrow competition. Church puts kneelers on display 7th May 2011

A COMPLAINT that there was nothing to kneel on at the altar of St Mary's Church, Matching, resulted in an 18-month labour of love which has gone on display this weekend. Nimble-fingered local people set about creating a new altar kneeler, and then the project developed further when it was decided that they would re-cover more than 100 kneelers at the church. Local people aged eight to 90 were involved in the months of hard work. Now local groups are depicted as well as local pubs and scenes, birds, a telephone box, and a Spitfire which commemorates those airmen who lost their lives in the two world wars. Among the 36 ladies whose efforts created the magnificent collection is 90-year-old Freda Thurston who completed several of the 105 kneelers. It is hoped that they will be on display again when the church holds its flower festival in September.

EPPING Forest District Council leader Di Collins is facing a leadership challenge, Everything Epping Forest can reveal. Members of the Epping Forest District Council Conservative Group, including the five new Tory councillors elected today, will be voting for their leader at a private meeting this evening. Everything Epping Forest understands that Chigwell Village councillor Lesley Wagland, the legal and estates portfolio holder on the current council, will be challenging Mrs Collins. It is not known whether there will be any other challengers. Mrs Collins declined to comment when contacted this afternoon but stated that if elected this evening she would only be serving as leader for one more year. The position of leader comes up for re-election each year. Until last year Mrs Collins had been unopposed. However Everything Epping Forest has learned that last year she was challenged by Chigwell councillor John Knapman, and won the contest by just two votes - 19 votes to 17.

MP welcomes district's AV vote 6th May 2011

EPPING Forest MP Eleanor Laing has welcomed the overwhelming ‘No’ vote in the Alternative Vote referendum in Epping Forest. Voters in Epping Forest voted against the AV vote referendum with 28,240 votes against and just 8,533 votes in favour of the Alternative Vote option. Mrs Laing said: "I'm particularly pleased that the result in Epping Forest has been so overwhelming. "We had a very respectable turnout (38 per cent) in Epping Forest. "I am not surprised at this because I know that large numbers of people do care about preserving our effective democratic system." She added: "I have campaigned and worked in Parliament against AV not just for the last few months but for many years so I am delighted the people have spoken and that and the issue of changing our voting system is now dead for 20 years."

Final preparations for May Fayre 5th May 2011

FINAL preparations are in full swing to ensure the May Fayre and Flower Festival at St Martin's Church, Ongar, on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15, is a success. The church will be filled with flower arrangements sponsored by local businesses and members of the congregation, on the theme of English towns and cities. The church’s own team of regular flower arrangers and friends, who decorate the church throughout the year, have designed and created their colourful interpretative displays for visitors to enjoy. There will be organ music on both days and on the Saturday harp and flute playing as well. Also on display will be an exhibition based on the 400th year anniversary of the King James Bible. People will be surprised by the relevance and impact the Bible still has on our language today! Visitors can take a break in the refreshment tent where they can enjoy home-made cakes (which will also be on sale to take home) baked by church members and friends. In the churchyard there will be various stalls including plants, bric-a-brac and books, an 'everything red, white and blue' stall, a bottle tombola, honey, woodturning, wooden toys, patchwork and small gifts. There will also be a raffle with some valuable prizes. On the Saturday a children’s tent will be available. In addition, on both days there will be a stall manned by Help for Heroes, the charity with whom the church is sharing the proceeds from the event. Marianne West, from the charity, will be speaking at the 10.30am Sunday service. At 5pm on the Sunday there will be an auction of the flowers. Visitors who are unable to attend at 5pm can place sealed bids in the displays they are interested in. Gill Richardson, chair of the church's fundraising committee said "There are so many people and organisations I should like to thank. "Our thanks go to our own congregation and friends for their hard work, time and talents which have been freely given, the businesses and individuals who have sponsored the flower arrangements and especially those who have contributed so generously to the raffle, and the shops in the town who have allowed us window space to advertise the event." Outbreak sparks measles warning 5th May 2011

HEALTH bosses have issued a measles warning following an outbreak in France with parents advised to protect their children with the MMR immunisation. More than 3,700 cases have been reported in France in January and February. The UK has a similar-sized population to France and there have been 193 confirmed cases between January and March this year. Head teachers of local schools have been alerted to the outbreak. Dr Pam Hall, Deputy Director of Public Health with NHS West Essex, said: "Parents of children who may be travelling to mainland Europe for school trips or holidays are advised that there may be an increased risk of acquiring measles. "They should ensure that their children have been fully vaccinated, and seek MMR immunisation from their GP if required. "Two doses of MMR vaccine at least one month apart are required to provide protection." In the UK following ten years of low uptake of MMR vaccine, there are school pupils who remain unvaccinated or are incompletely vaccinated and are therefore vulnerable. In west Essex, about 91.5 per cent of two-year-olds and 85 per cent of five-year-olds are up to date with their MMR immunisations.

Crews tackle blaze in outbuildings 3rd May 2011

GAS cylinders have been involved in a blaze which broke out in a shed and outbuildings in Hastingwood. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were called to Mill Street at 5.45pm this evening (Tuesday) where a shed and outbuildings measuring 25m x 25m in the back garden of a property were well alight. Initially two appliances were sent but the officer in charge requested an additional appliance for water supplies. Firefighting operations were hindered by five gas cylinders which were involved in the fire. Crews from Harlow and Epping took about an hour-and-a-quarter to deal with the blaze which completely destroyed the outbuildings and damaged a tractor inside. A fire service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.

Man 'critical' after Crooked Mile crash 3rd May 2011

POLICE are investigating a road crash in Crooked Mile, Waltham Abbey, which involved a man who may have been taken ill at the wheel. Police are appealing for witnesses and especially want to speak to a driver who stopped following the incident which happened at 8.15am today (Tuesday). A police spokesman said it is thought the driver of a blue Renault Clio may have been taken ill at the wheel of his car which then hit the wall of a property. The 64-year-old local man was airlifted to Lister Hospital in Stevenage where his condition is described as critical. Police want to talk to any witnesses but ask that the female driver of a silver Mercedes who stopped at the scene contacts police. She and any other witnesses are asked to contact the road policing unit at Chigwell on 0300 333 4444.

Woman assaulted at High Beach 3rd May 2011

A WOMAN was assaulted and her car damaged when she spoke to a man about "parking issues" near the Kings Oak pub, High Beach. Police said the woman, with four children in her car, was driving past the pub at about 2.30pm on Easter Bank Holiday Monday (April 25) house when she stopped and spoke about parking issues with a man driving a silver VW Golf. A police spokesman said the conversation became heated and it is alleged the man assaulted the woman and damaged her vehicle by punching her wing mirror off. PC Steve Parish said: "It was a nice sunny day. High Beach was packed with day trippers to the forest and I'm sure people must have seen what happened. "If you witnessed this incident, please could you contact me." Some 65 charities received money from the sponsorship efforts of the 184 people who took part at the weekend, making the 110ft descent from the top of the tower. Among those taking part was Louise Burnham who was supporting St Clare Hospice. She said "Tragically my brother-in-law died this year from cancer leaving his wife and two very young children. Through his illness he and his family received amazing care and support from St Clare Hospice. "I would like to give something back to our local hospice, to show my appreciation for the fantastic care, and others like them, give to people living with cancer and other devastating illnesses." Tracy Stratford, event organiser at the Hastingwood hospice, said "We would like to say a big thank you to all who abseiled in support of the hospice. "With their help and support in raising vital funds, we can continue to care for the local community." David Dixon travelled from Workington in Cumbria to take part as he raised money for Vision Aid Overseas. The final figure raised - £48,979 - was up on last year making it one of the most successful in the 14 years that the Rotary Club of Harlow Tye has organised the event. Engaged couple celebrate at abseil 1st May 2011

A COUPLE who got engaged at the top of the Church Langley water tower have returned 12 months on to celebrate - and complete their second descent from the 110ft structure. Derek Gatfield went down on one knee at the top of the tower a year ago, and girlfriend Lucy Fullick said 'yes'. And so 12 months on the couple returned to celebrate the anniversary, take part for a second time.

Lucy said: "Most couples celebrate by going out for a meal - we go off the top of a tower." Reflecting on the special moment a year ago, Lucy said: "Derek proposed to me at the top. It was a complete surprise, He went down on one knee and I said 'yes' and we've come back this year to celebrate." The couple, from Bishop's Stortford, plan to marry next summer and intend to take part in each abseil event to celebrate the anniversary of their engagement. Some 200 people took part in this year's event, organised by the Rotary Club of Harlow Tye. A host of local charities benefit from the two-day fundraiser, with local causes this year including the Epping Forest District Council chairman's charities, Home-Start Harlow, Multiple Sclerosis and Hatfield Broad Oak Under-Fives Nursery.

Crews tackle tyres blaze 1st May 2011

FIREFIGHTERS used foam to douse flames after tyres caught light near Ongar. Two Brentwood crews were called to Epping Road, between the Vojan Restaurant and the Four Wantz roundabout, at 6pm last night. Initially one appliance was sent but on arrival the officer in charge requested an additional crew. Firefighters took more than an hour -and -a-half to deal with the incident.

School plans extension 1st May 2011

PLANS have been drawn up to extend St John's Primary School, Buckhurst Hill. The Essex County Council application is for a two/three storey extension to the existing High Road building comprising six classrooms, four group rooms, storage areas/rooms and associated circulation areas and facilities.
