DIRECTOR'SNOTE The musical , based on John Van Druten's play/ Am a Camera (1951) which was adapted from Christopher Isherwood's novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939), depict episodes of anti-Semitism and transgressive sexual practices in Berlin during the waning years of the short-lived Weimar Republic (1918-1933) . This story reveals a range of connections between daily life in Berlin and the nocturnal world of the cabaret on the eve of the Third Reich. The imagination and sexual energy of these cabarets were actually points of resistance, and the cabarets took on the Nazis as their targets of satire . While they ridiculed the logical absurdity of Hitler's ideas, they failed to fathom the immensity of the Nazi danger . After 1933 these performers were persecuted, and by 1935 most cabarets were forced out to London , Prague and Vienna .

At the beginning of their movement , the Nazis controlled less than 3 percent of the national press. Within a few weeks Hitler took complete control of all forms of communicative resistance and dissociated any agency that disclosed or perpetuated information that would impair the Nazis . Cabaret offers one of the most chilling lines you'll ever hear in an American musical : "That's just politics, and what does that have to do with us?"
