Gladenbeck & Sohn, 65 cm tall. and width 50 cm. from the second half of the 19th century. Measures: H65 - W50 cm. Weight: 28 kilograms The almost perfect state of conservation immediately stands out, the bronze patina is superb. It represents the Greek God Hermes (or Mercury in Roman mythology), divinity of the mythology and religions of ancient Greece. His main role is as a messenger of the gods. Son of Zeus and Pleiade Maia, he is one of the twelve Olympians. The bust is inspired by the famous work "Hermes with Dionysus", a Parian marble sculpture (h. 215 cm) by Praxiteles, datable to 350-330 BC. approximately and preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. The Greek state signed an agreement with the German Empire in 1874 for the archaeological exploration of Olympia. The excavations, led by a German team, were started in 1875 under the direction of Ernst Curtius. On 8 May 1877, among the ruins of the Heraion, the sculpture of Hermes with the child Dionysus was found, mentioned by Pausanias on that very site. Protected by a layer of clay, it was in excellent conservation conditions, despite some incomplete parts. Other fragments were discovered shortly after, including the trunk on which the statue rests, covered by a large cloth, and the pedestal. Praxiteles focuses on the gazes of the two characters, so much so that it is an intense scene. Great attention is paid to the psychology of the characters, with distant and melancholy looks. Carl Gustav Hermann Gladenbeck (1827-1918) is the founder of one of the most famous foundries ever: Aktien-Gesellschaft Gladenbeck, known for producing high quality bronze castings in the 19th century and operating from 1851 to 1926. 1 / 3 anticSwiss 02/10/2021 11:19:58 http://www.anticswiss.com The bronze foundry produced numerous important statues and monuments, as well as large and small sculptures, as well as the Kant monument for Königsberg, for example the Victory of the Berlin Victory Column to a design by Friedrich Drake. In the largest brick castle in Europe in Malbork (Marienburg), Poland, the bronze statues of the four great masters of Prussia (designed by Rudolf Simering, 1872) are placed in the large inner courtyard. In 1910, Gladenbeck founded the Untermyer Fountain of the Three Dancing Maidens by sculptor Walter Schott. The fountain is located in the Conservatory Garden, Central Park, New York. In the early 1920s, art deco master Ferdinand Preiss employed Gladenbeck to cast many of his bronze and chryselephantine sculptures. For more photos and information do not hesitate to contact me.
