ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST 2020 Vision We are called to active discipleship to live the values taught by our Lord Christ through acts of faith, hope, and charity. These seven holy men and women will become the ’s newest saints. The list includes: a pope (Blessed Paul VI); an archbishop (Blessed Oscar Arnulfo Romero) who was martyred for his work as an ardent defender of the poor and staunch supporter of the social justice work of the Church; two diocesan priests (Blessed Francisco Spinelli and Blessed Vincenzo Romano) known for their extraordinary holiness; two (Blessed Maria Katharina Kasper and Blessed Nazaria Ignazia de Santa Teresa de Jesus); and a layman (Blessed Nunzio Sulprizio) who died at the age of 19 after spending his life assisting the poor and the sick in spite of his own illness. Blessed Pope Paul VI (born Giovanni Battista Montini) was born on September 26, 1887 in Brescia and died on August 6, 1978 in Castel Gandolfo. Elected on June 21, 1963, he brought the Second Vatican Council which was convoked earlier by his predecessor, St. Pope John XXIII, to a fruitful conclusion and guided the Church though the reforms mandated by the documents of the Council. He was beatiied on October 19, 2014. Blessed Oscar Arnulfo Romero, was archbishop of San Salvador when he was gunned down while celebrating Mass in a hospital chapel on March 24, 1980, a day after he had told an army made up of peasants that they were murdering their own people. Born on August 15, 1917, he will become El Salvador’s irst canonized saint. Blessed Francesco Spinelli was an Italian priest born on April 14, 1853 in Milan. After a vision in which he saw women worshipping Jesus in Eucharistic adoration while visiting Rome, he made a resolve to found a religious community of women dedicated solely to Eucharistic adoration called Institute of the Sisters Adorers of the Most Holy Sacrament. He died in Rivolta d’Adda, Italy on 6 February 1913 and was beatiied on June 21, 1992 by Pope John Paul II. Blessed Vincenzo Romano was born on June 3, 1951 in , Italy. He was noted for his very simple and frugal way of life and his special love for orphans. He worked tirelessly for the poor and was very much committed to the social needs of all people in his hometown. He died on December 20, 1831 and was beatiied by Pope Leo XIII on September 22, 1843. Blessed Maria Katharina Kasper was born May 26, 1820 in Dernbach, . As a young child of six, Catherine went to the school in her little village. Reading was the subject she liked most. She would help in the family's potato patch and with other tasks. Her mother taught her household chores as well as how to spin and weave fabric. Because she helped others in ordinary ways, other young girls were attracted by Catherine’s example of service. Together, Catherine and four other women formed the religious community, the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ when they pronounced the public vows of poverty, chastity and obedience on August 15, 1851. Their ministry continued throughout Germany and spread to England, the United States in 1868, the , , , Brazil, Kenya and Nigeria. Known in religious life, as Mother Mary, she died on February 2, 1898. She was beatiied on April 16, 1978 By Pope Paul VI. Blessed Nazaria Ignacia de Santa Teresa de Jesús was born Nazaria March y Mesa on January 10, 1889 in Madrid, Spain. She was the fourth of eighteen children. Early in her life she made a personal vow of consecration to God. Her family, however, did not nurture her faith. In fact, because of Nazaria’s excitement over her faith, she was once grounded from attending Mass! Later, however, her grandmother encouraged her to be faithful in practicing her faith. When life in Spain became dificult, Nazaria’s family moved to Mexico. During the move, Nazaria met and was inspired by several sisters who belonged to the Institute of Sisters of the Abandoned Elders. In 1908 she entered the order, and was sent to Bolivia to serve as a cook, housekeeper, nurse, and beggar for the poor. She was faithful to these tasks for twelve years, but began to feel a call to found a new religious order. On June 16, 1925, with six other sisters, she founded the Congregation of the Missionary Crusaders of the Church. Their mission was to teach children and adults about the Catholic faith, to support the work of priests, and to conduct missions. During the war between Bolivia and Paraguay (1932-1935), the sisters cared for soldiers on both sides, and opened homes for war orphans. Also during that time, Mother Nazaria founded the irst magazine for women in Bolivia in religious life and the irst female trade union. On her path to sainthood, Mother Nazaria led by example, serving as a model of both holiness and simplicity. She did all she could to encourage her sisters, to strengthen their sense of unity, and to keep them strong in their devotion to their ministry. She died on June 9, 1947 and was beatiied on September 27 by Pope John Paul II. Blessed Nunzio Sulprizio Born on April 13, 1817, in Pescosansonesco in the province of Sicily. He was orphaned at an early age and was sent to live with his grandmother who cared for him after having lived with an uncle who treated him harshly. Because of this violence, the young craftsman suffered from a wound in the leg, earning him the nickname “the little saint lame”. In spite of his illness, the young man assisted the other patients, and, in his poverty, relieved the misery of the poor. He spent the last two years of his life at Naples’ hospital caring for the incurable where he died on May 5, 1836, at 19 years of age. He was beatiied on December 1, 1963 by Pope Paul VI. Blessed Nunzio Sulprizio is the youngest among the seven Blesseds canonized by Pope Francis on the occasion of the Synod of Bishops discussing the vocation and discernment of the Youth in the Church and in the world. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

From the Weekend: They say that it is not so much that Columbus discovered October 6 & 7 America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world “stayed

discovered.” The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured Saturday 5:00 PM 1,487.00 7:00 PM 760.00 that the news would lash around Europe with an air of authority Sunday 7:30 AM 1,935.00 that other “discoverers” lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early 9:00 AM 1,605.00 visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk 10:45 AM 1,523.00 who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to “the 12:30 PM 1,558.00 Isle of the Blessed” in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away 7:00 PM 1,361.10 from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of Online Giving (OG) 927.95 adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in Total Sunday Offering $ 11,157.05 the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said Our Weekly Goal $ 11,000.00 to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular Variance 157.05 adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Novena 482.00 Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and First Friday 1,004.00 Scotland. Upcoming Second Offerings: In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America 10/21/18 World Mission Sunday from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS GIFTS! encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this Make checks payable to too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in “St John the Baptist Parish.” the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WORDS OF WISDOM The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today’s first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is “sharper than any two-edged sword.” We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God’s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us.
