Floor Plan of the Marriott East Hotel 41 ..................................................................................... Map of IIAAA Districts FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the 45th Annual Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association’s State Conference at Indianapolis’s Marriott East. This year’s conference will bring together over 400 Athletic Secretaries, Middle/Jr. and High School Athletic Administrators from around the state and provide an opportunity to network and gain professional development. I especially want to welcome those of you who are attending your first State Conference, and to encourage you to attend the First Time Attendees Orientation meeting on Sunday, March 17, at 1:15pm, where you’ll receive beneficial information concerning the conference. The planning for this year’s conference started immediately at the conclusion of last year’s conference; it takes many individuals to make it successful. With input from last year’s evaluations, along with suggestions from the various districts, this year’s conference offers a plethora of topics and ideas to assist the new and veteran Athletic Administrator. Borrowing a phrase from the wedding world, this year’s conference will have “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” I’ll let you figure out which is which. Eleven LTC courses will open the conference on Saturday and Sunday along with several workshops. The IHSAA Assistant Commissioners will be available Sunday afternoon for their yearly workshop on current issues and events. At Sunday night’s Awards Banquet, we will showcase our IIAAA and NIAAA scholarship winners along with honoring the district’s Middle/Jr. and High School Athletic Administrators of the year and Charles Maas award winners. Monday morning’s speaker will be Indianapolis Colts Community Spokesperson, Josh Bleill. Josh will kick off the day with his inspirational and motivational speech “Best Foot Forward.”Also, this year we will have a guest speaker at our business luncheon. Former Major League Pitcher Tommy John will be on hand to share a few of his experiences in the “bigs.” Monday afternoon’s workshops should provide a variety of opportunities to gain some professional knowledge and, for the third straight year, Monday Night’s Social, which will include the fan favorite dueling pianos and will provide an evening to catch up with peers and vendors. On Monday and Tuesday, over 130 vendors will be on hand in the atrium and exhibits hall to provide product and service information that may make your job a little easier. This one stop shopping not only allows you to save time by having all the vendors in one place but their presence also assists in keeping the State Conference registration fees nominal. Tuesday morning will start off with Sports Psychologist, Dr. Chris Carr, as he shares with us his thoughts on “Developing Mental Toughness in High School Athletes.” IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox will wrap of the general sessions with the popular Q/A followed by the luncheon Banquet and the much loved state conference door prizes. Finally, I would like to thank my wife of twenty-five years Judi, and our three children Chelsea, Keaton and Kendyll not only for their support and encouragement this past year but also for the sacrifices they’ve made the past twenty years I’ve served in athletic administration. I hope you’ll be able to pick up a couple of ideas that you can implement this spring or next fall, but if not, at least you’ll have an opportunity to refresh, recharge and reconnect. Thank you for attending, have a great conference and God Bless! Sponsored by Union Bank February 23, 2013 I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generosity. As I humbly stood waiting for my name to be called [at the Scholarship Awards ceremony], I walked proud and full of emotion as I heard my name through the loud speakers. After I was photographed, I sat down and then opened up the brochure in order to see my name once more, and that is when it hit me; I was overcome with an immense feeling of appreciation as I thought to myself about what a prestigious recognition I just received. The feeling of accomplishment that I felt at that moment will remain with me forever. It is people like you who give me the strength and motivation to keep my dream alive of earning a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. I am inspired like never before. Your thoughtful donation helps me as I continue my plight to better myself and those around me. Helping this world to become a better place is my ultimate goal in life, and you have lit a fire beneath me! • Former Tide Pitcher Dustin Mcgowan Wins Hutch Award
Former Tide pitcher wins Hutch Award McGowan now a reliever for Marlins By Mike Riddle POSTED: December 26, 2016 11:26 a.m. Miami Marlin relief pitcher and Long County native Dustin McGowan recently received the 2016 Hutch Award. The award is given by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to a Major League player who exemplifies the spirit and courage of the Fred Hutchinson, a former player and manager, who died in 1964 from cancer at age 45. McGowan was a standout player for Long County from 1996-2000. He was a first-round pick by the Toronto Blue Jays, selected 33rd in the 2000 MLB draft. While playing in the minor leagues, his 2004 season was cut short by an injury that required Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. McGowan also discovered he was a diabetic, and began pitching while wearing an insulin pump. Despite the setbacks, Baseball America named him the #1 prospect in the Blue Jays farm system in 2005. That July, McGowan was called up to debut with the Blue Jays. McGowan continued to pitch for Toronto, but also continued to have medical issues, resulting in more surgeries and setbacks. Despite the hardships, McGowan maintained a positive attitude and was productive for Toronto, until he was released in 2015. During the early part of that year, McGowan played briefly for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies, until being signed by the Miami Marlins as a relief pitcher after the season. McGowan finished the 2016 season with a 1-3 record, a 2.82 ERA, having 63 strikeouts in 67 innings of action.

  • Brandon Belt
BRANDON BELT • Born April 20, 1988, in Nacogdoches, Texas, in a house his father built. • Parents are Darrell and Janice (pronounced Ja-neece). He has one younger brother, Cameron. Father is a geometry teacher at Brandon’s high school, Hudson High in Lufkin. His mother is a hairdresser. • As a senior at Hudson High, Belt earned district MVP, All-State and All-Amer- ica honors. Standout pitcher – thought he’d make the major leagues in that position. • Had a verbal agreement with Cubs coming out of high school to be drafted in high rounds and paid high-round money. But Cubs didn’t come through and Red Sox drafted him the 11th round. Disappointed, Belt went to college instead. “Everything I went through happened for a reason,’’ he says. “I’m so happy I went to college. I matured so much as a baseball player and as a person and I made so many friends.’’ • Played one year for San Jacinto College in Houston before transferring to University of Texas. (Same two colleges Roger Clemens attended.) Majored in education. Helped propel Texas to the College World Series in 2009, where the Longhorns lost in the Championship game to LSU. • Injuries as a junior at University of Texas forced him to give up pitching altogether. When his hitting dropped off – he was barely hitting .300 two thirds into his junior year – Brandon sank to the lowest point in his life. He had always wanted to be pro baseball player and now he was wondering if he would make it. Then his grandfather, James Peter- son, died.

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 48, No. 4, June 29, 2009) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier NCBWA Membership: More than four months after its official start back on Feb. 20, the 2009 college baseball season has found its way into the record books.
