Olsen: San Antonio's West Side Sound San Antonio’s SideSound West Antonio’s San West Side Sound The West Side Sound is a remarkable they all played an important role in shaping this genre, Allen O. The Album Was Recorded in the Sessions Described in the Original Liner Notes Which Follow
The album was recorded in the sessions described in the original liner notes which follow. Two of the tracks that appear here- "Fillie Trillie" and "Satin Doll"---were part of the same recording sessions, but were not included on the album originally released, thus are not discussed in the notes that follow. The album began as a single recording session during which we intended to record three or four of Duke's recent compositions for release sometime in the future. It began early one afternoon in February when the band arrived back in New York from a long stay in Florida, and before we even began, the session was turning into a welcome-home party for Duke. Dozens of fans appeared in the studio, among them Dizzy Gillespie (with trumpet) and Jimmy Rushing, who likes to listen to big bands, and Jimmy Jones, who just happened to be passing by. As the crowd gathered Duke was on the phone calling his group of nine percussionists, and the studio lobby was filling up with kettle drums and xylophones. Chairs were set up for our unexpected audience, and Duke, with the innocent expression of a small boy who has just dropped a match into a gas tank, said, "Let's see what happens:" Last summer, between jazz festivals, Ellington introduced at New York's Lewisohn Stadium one of the dizzier flights of musical fancy in his long career. From the city's symphonic musicians he drew nine men to play a couple of short pieces written to feature a full set of tympani and a line of vibraphones and marimbas and xylophones long enough to stretch from one side of the large stage to the other. -

Jakob Bro (1978) is a Danish guitar player and composer living in Copenhagen, Denmark. He is a former member of Paul Motian & The Electric Bebop Band (Garden of Eden, ECM - 2006) and a current member of Tomasz Stanko’s Dark Eyes Quintet (Dark Eyes, ECM - 2009). He has released 12 records as a bandleader including musicians like Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Bley, Chris Cheek, Thomas Morgan, Ben Street, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew D’Angelo, Chris Speed, George Garzone, Oscar Noriega, David Virelles, Jon Christensen and many more. He has toured in Japan, China, South Korea, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, South Africa, USA and most of Europe Jakob Bro is currently leading a trio with Joey Baron and Thomas Morgan. This trio recorded a new album for ECM Records in November 2015 set to come out in the near future. Also he is working with Palle Mikkelborg and with Bro/Knak, a collaboration with the Danish electronica producer Thomas Knak (Opiate). A new project with Danish/British trumpet player Jakob Buchanan, Thomas Morgan and music for choir is also under way. Jakob Bro has received 6 Danish Music Awards and has been accepted into Jazz Denmark’s Hall of Fame. In 2009 and 2013 he received JazzSpecial’s price for Danish Jazz Record of the Year (Balladeering & December Song) and in 2012 he received the DJBFA honorary award. The year after, in 2013 he received both the ”Composer of the Year” Award from Danish Music Publishers Association (the price is named after Danish classical composer Carl Nielsen) and The Jazznyt Price founded by Niels Overgaard. -

A Medley of Cultures: Louisiana History at the Cabildo Chapter 1 Introduction This book is the result of research conducted for an exhibition on Louisiana history prepared by the Louisiana State Museum and presented within the walls of the historic Spanish Cabildo, constructed in the 1790s. All the words written for the exhibition script would not fit on those walls, however, so these pages augment that text. The exhibition presents a chronological and thematic view of Louisiana history from early contact between American Indians and Europeans through the era of Reconstruction. One of the main themes is the long history of ethnic and racial diversity that shaped Louisiana. Thus, the exhibition—and this book—are heavily social and economic, rather than political, in their subject matter. They incorporate the findings of the "new" social history to examine the everyday lives of "common folk" rather than concentrate solely upon the historical markers of "great white men." In this work I chose a topical, rather than a chronological, approach to Louisiana's history. Each chapter focuses on a particular subject such as recreation and leisure, disease and death, ethnicity and race, or education. In addition, individual chapters look at three major events in Louisiana history: the Battle of New Orleans, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Organization by topic allows the reader to peruse the entire work or look in depth only at subjects of special interest. For readers interested in learning even more about a particular topic, a list of additional readings follows each chapter. Before we journey into the social and economic past of Louisiana, let us look briefly at the state's political history.
