VPA Annual Report 2007 Dean=s Overview of 2007 I am happy to provide this annual report on the accomplishment of VPA Goals and Objectives 2007 relative to the five goals of the IPFW Strategic Plan. This narrative supplements the summary of goals and objectives provided in the attached tables.

I. Enrollment Growing VPA enrollments continue to reflect the commitment of VPA department chairs and faculty to excellent teaching and mentoring of students. Retention of current students and recruitment of new ones led to VPA’s eighth consecutive year of growth in majors and credit hours generated. In the Fall Semester of 2007, VPA added 1.5% to the 6.7% increase achieved in Fall of 2006. The credit hours generated increased at a much greater rate, with an overall increase of 10.4%. These growth trends continued during the Spring Semester of 2008, with a majors increase of 4.4% and a credit hours generated increase of 14.7%. Overall, VPA continues on an upward trajectory, due to the concentrated efforts of faculty and chairs.

II. Academic Accomplishments A. Faculty/Staff Positions: VPA faculty, staff, and administrators are the most essential component of the educational process and continued to provide exceptional educational opportunities for students and the community. This was a year of significant transitions, marked by the departure of Dean Benjamin Christy and VCD Chair AnnMarie LeBlanc. The Theatre Department mourned the death of long-time chair and faculty member Larry Life, while the Music Department marked the retirement of pianist Masson Robertson. All of this transition, along with other resignations and departures led to numerous new appointments in the college. Steven T. Sarratore, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs and Professor of Theatre served as interim dean, while Associate Professor of Music Barbara Resch filled in as Associate Dean. John O’Connell was hired as Chair of Theatre, and alumna Jauneth Skinner served capably as interim chair of VCD. Other new appointments included Assistant Professor of Theatre Jeffrey Cassazza and Assistant Professor of Music Hamilton Tescarollo.

B. Accreditation: The four VPA departments are committed to achieving accreditation. Having completed its Spring 2006 pre-accreditation visit, the Department of Theatre is making curricular adjustments in preparation for an NAST application in 2009. VCD and Fine Arts will complete the internal review of their program reviews in Spring 2008 and schedule a NAST pre-accreditation visit in 2008-2009.

C. Curricular Development: In support of IPFW’s First Year Initiative (FYI), VPA presented one learning

community course in Theatre and offered one in Music that was cancelled due to under enrollment. Additional learning community courses are planned for 2008-2009.

Degrees under development include the Master of Music Education (nearing submission for pre-approval. VCD is developing a BFA track in Industrial Design and is exploring potential directions for three tracks in Computer Art and Design: animation & modeling and interactive design. Fine Arts initiated a fine arts track in MLS to meet the degree needs of teachers and others wanting a liberal arts masters with emphasis in studio work.

The Center for Industrial Innovation and Design (CIID) is actively connecting IPFW students and faculty with regional entrepreneurs and businesses, laying the groundwork for an ongoing center of success. Clients during the past year included the New Haven Chamber of Commerce, ITT, and Mancino’s Pizza, and the Mastodon Park project.

The Department of Fine Arts continued its travel abroad program with a trip to Italy and offered a workshop with visiting metalsmith Fred Pfenster.

VCD signed an articulation agreement with Ivy Tech to facilitate student transfers. Faculty of both institutions are seeking additional partnership opportunities.

D. Faculty/Student Research/Creative Endeavor: VPA faculty continued their strong record of accomplishment in the area of research/creative endeavor in 2007. The department chairs make research/creative endeavor a departmental priority, and the continuation of the VPA faculty development fund provides assistance supplementing departmental and university resources. Faculty development of regional, national and international reputations and their continuing professional growth are essential for VPA’s success as an arts school. A sample of faculty successes follows:  Fine Arts faculty member Christopher Ganz’s work was exhibited at several national and international exhibitions  Fine Arts faculty member Audrey Ushenko’s had a solo exhibition at Denise Bibro Fines Gallery in New York City  Music Faculty member Melanie Bookout performed several concerts with an early music ensemble in Germany  Theatre faculty member Mark Ridgeway designed four productions for the Tibbits Opera House in Michigan  VCD’s Interim Chair Jauneth Skinner’s work was exhibited at several national and international exhibitions

Student recognition also continued to grow in 2007. Organists Matthew Johnston and Brent Neuenschwander

performed a recital at First Wayne Street Methodist Church. Eleven other Music students performed concentration or junior recitals. Theatre students Jessica Butler, Breona Cronrad, Adam Hamilton, Blane Presler, Tamara Ricketts, Jessica Sisson, Brett Tubbs and Stephanie Vanderwall were nominated for Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Irene Ryan Acting Awards. Brent Bruin was awarded a KCACTF certificate of merit for his work as stage manager of Story Theatre. VCD student Cynthia Arnett was the Overall Winner in the Family Team t-shirt design competition for the Northeastern Indiana Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. William Baulkey, Libby Huffer, and Lisa Schwaberow each had their work published or selected for juried exhibition. In Fine Arts, Benjamin Lawrence took first place at Northeast Indiana College Juried Art Exhibition, while Sara Auman-Smith and Jonathan Burnswere awarded Honorable Mention. Rebecca Bailey, John Hoering and Chase Wire had their work displayed at Artlink’s 27th Annual Print Exhibition, while Jennifer Clements, Abby Murray, Angela Grogg and Karen Montoya presented an adjudicated lecture, “Sculpting Life-Like Figures,” (with Assistant Professor Hai Kyung Kim) at the Art Education Association of Indiana Conference.

III. Community Outreach: Faculty and students made significant progress toward the VPA goal to gain recognition as the Center for Arts Education in Northeastern Indiana through their outreach endeavors in IPFW’s 11-county service region.

The Community Arts Academy (CAA) program continued its enrichment program under its new director, revising its web presence and implementing new classes and marketing, strategies for which were suggested by a SBMS marketing class.

VPA Outreach Expansion Include Regional Partners: In 2007, VPA completed several regional outreach projects throughout IPFW’s eleven-county service region, including collaborations with the following community partners:

 Auburn: The Auburn Arts Commission (AAC) continued its collaborations with VPA, which included summer arts presentations at the Auburn Libraries. The Department of Fine Arts presented the educational component for an outdoor bronze sculpture exhibition. Art Education students taught sculpture lessons to 4th graders in Auburn schools in the spring and served as docents during the exhibition. 

 Angola: The Director of Instrumental Activities and jazz faculty visited Angola schools, continuing outreach there.  Museum of Art (FWMOA): Art education students continued service as docents for children’s tour groups, and the Department of Music presented First Sunday performances by students and faculty, coinciding with the museum’s day of free admission and special events for families. 

 The IPFW Arts Connection, a new program placing university arts students (IPFW Arts Scholars) in K-12 schools to assist with completion of a teacher’s proposed project. Eight IPFW Arts Scholars completed projects with students and teachers from seven different schools. Project funding ($20,000) was obtained from Ron Venderly. 

 Allen County Public Library: Plans were made with the library for a senior VCD show in 2008.

 Community Partners Serving At-Risk Students: VPA continued to work with our partners, including United Hispanic Americans, League for the Blind and Disabled, Youth Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Twentieth Century Scholars, providing arts instruction through the Community Arts Academy, with scholarships funded by Schneider Foundation.

VCD Internships were expanded in 2007 and included student placements in more than 20 regional businesses.

Higher Education Arts Consortium: VPA established a consortium of six northern Indiana universities to identify ways the faculty and students can interact. The Consortium’s 2008 exhibition took place at Manchester College and included IPFW student work.

IV. VPA Facilities and Infrastructure: In 2007, with the completion of the magnificent new John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center, the College of Visual and Performing Arts is housed in one of the finest arts complexes in the Midwest. We anticipate new opportunities as the departments explore the possibilities that these superb facilities and our new proximity to each other offer. We are also pleased that three of our community arts partners are preparing to take up residence on campus. The Fort Wayne Children’s Choir, FAME, and the Unity Performing Arts Foundation will soon be moving into their offices in the Rhinehart Center. We also look forward to continuing our long relationship with the Fort Wayne Community Band and strengthening our important relationship to the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

V. Summary: VPA’s increases in student and faculty successes, programming and facility development are significant. It is rewarding to interact with a wide variety of regional constituencies, companies, corporations and non-profit arts and non-arts entities and note that they regularly contact VPA for collaboration, evidence that VPA is gaining visibility and recognition as the Center for Arts Education in Northeastern Indiana. On behalf of the college, I am pleased to express gratitude to IPFW for the support and encouragement which makes this growth possible.
