2020 FALL Commencement

Friday, DECEMBER 11, 2020

Dear Roadrunners

Let me be the first to congratulate you on graduating from Metropolitan State University of Denver. You set a goal, worked diligently in the face of obstacles and made it to the finish line. It’s time to celebrate!

Let me also extend my gratitude to your family and friends who have cheered you on. Without people to support us in life, we could never succeed.

You are part of a remarkable graduating class: 1,578 students were eligible to receive their degrees this fall — an impressive number of Roadrunners who are on their way to great things. Your resilience in this challenging year is the epitome of Roadrunner tenacity and speaks to your unwavering desire to succeed.

At MSU Denver, we are reimagining what’s possible in Photo by Mark Woolcott higher education through the power of innovation and transformational, real-world learning to build a better tomorrow. We know that higher education is the key factor in providing upward economic and social mobility. That’s why we offer high-quality, accessible and enriching education that prepares students for successful careers, postgraduate education and lifelong learning.

Our students come from every background and experience, embodying the University’s unique spirit and inclusive environment. We have first-generation college students trying to do a little better than their parents, veterans looking to reestablish themselves in the workforce and plenty of people who want to change directions in their careers. Our mission is to meet students where they are in their lives. They may have taken a zigzagging path to get to college, but they find their way to MSU Denver and graduate as proud Roadrunners.

Today, you join an alumni community of more than 100,000 graduates in our 55 years as an institution. And not just any alumni – scientists working to cure cancer, journalists winning awards for their storytelling, engineers building satellites, nurses working on the front line of the pandemic and many others who are at the very top of their fields. They are reimagining what is possible in their own lives and engaging our communities. Roadrunners also power the state’s economy, with more than 80% of alumni remaining in Colorado after graduation. In fact, the direct economic impact of their total average wage earned over a 35-year career totals $134.9 billion.

When you leave here today, you’ll start on your next road. I am confident it will take you to places you never expected and, ultimately, to amazing achievements. Please let us know when you get there, so we can brag about your success.

And don’t forget to tell everyone you know that you graduated from MSU Denver!

Sincerely,

Janine Davidson, Ph.D. President

We are reimagining opportunity At MSU Denver, we see higher education as the foundation of the American dream. As a Hispanic-Serving Institution, we are profoundly committed to inclusion and serve the most diverse undergraduate-student population in Colorado, and we educate the most first-generation students. Our students come from every background imaginable, and we meet them where they are in their lives and prepare them for postgraduate success. We’re proud to have been recognized by the Military Times for the University’s support of veterans, as well as by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for the innovative pathways we provide to transfer students.

We are reimagining excellence With more than 95 majors, eight graduate programs and 36 certificate programs, our blended focus on arts, sciences, humanities, professional studies and civic engagement helps students develop career-ready skills and a deep knowledge of the issues and dynamics that shape the workforce. Those students learn with support from extraordinary faculty members who build hands-on learning into every course. Counted among the faculty ranks of noted academics, national experts and industry icons are a Grammy-nominated jazz musician, the former director of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and even Colorado’s Science Teacher of the Year. And while only 5% of businesses worldwide earn AACSB accreditation, our College of Business is one of them.

We are reimagining innovation Great education is always evolving, and MSU Denver is on the cutting edge when it comes to meeting the needs of today’s students and society. Industry and community partnerships such as the One World One Water Center with Denver Botanic Gardens, Individualized Degree Programs, the Classroom to Career Hub, and experiential learning opportunities with companies including Ambient Energy and SpringHill Suites by Marriott are just a few of the ways we prepare students for the workforce. Plus, our Innovative and Lifelong Learning programs offer flexible continuing education to hone skills, earn certifications or expand career options in high-growth industries such as data science and health. For our cutting- edge work, we were named the fifth-most innovative university in the West by U.S. News & World Report.

Metropolitan State University of Denver 13 Ryan McGoffin, Provost’s Award Winner

Ryan McGoffin is using his interest in linguistics to make a difference in the field of organ and tissue donation.

Ryan McGoffin’s first try at college, right out of high school, ended not long after it started. After struggling with addiction, the Colorado native left school to seek treatment in California. Once back at home, McGoffin was looking for ways to restart his life and found a job at the nonprofit AlloSource, which works with lifesaving cellular and tissue allografts.

His new job helping with organ and tissue donations was an eye- opening metaphor – a path that provided a second chance to others.

“I am extremely grateful for the second chance I was granted,” McGoffin says. “I work every day not to waste it.”

McGoffin’s new path not only propelled him to new, fulfilling career opportunities but led to Metropolitan State University of Denver, where this fall he will graduate summa cum laude as the Provost’s Award winner, earning a 4.0 GPA in English.

McGoffin is interested in the ethics and regulatory side of organ and tissue donation and plans to apply what he learned in his linguistics classes to his quest for a law degree and a master’s degree in bioethics. He says he’s “fascinated by the intersection of language, law, philosophy and psychology.”

“There’s been a lot of interesting things happening lately on a federal scale around organ-allocation laws,” McGoffin says. “I could hopefully have some substantive impact on those changes in the future.”

At AlloSource, McGoffin moved up the ranks to biologics technician, working primarily on stem-cell grafts for regenerative medicine. His passion then led him to Donor Alliance, the federally designated organ- procurement organization for Colorado and Wyoming.

“I see what is essentially the worst day for one person or family and the happiest day for another,” McGoffin says. “So there’s a weird dichotomy between life and death that I’ve faced every day. On the one hand, it’s really inspiring to see the generosity in people, but you also see the fragility of life.”

While he continued to expand his skills and knowledge in the field, he also decided to dip his toes back into the higher-ed waters at Community College of Aurora. He then transferred to MSU Denver, where he fell in love with the linguistics program.

One of McGoffin’s professors, Andrew Pantos, Ph.D., considers him to be “one of the three strongest students I have had the privilege to teach in my career thus far” and is particularly impressed with his critical-thinking skills.

Linguistics Professor Marina Gorlach, Ph.D., says McGoffin’s research projects “reflect his authentic way of thinking, creativity and serious approach to studies.”

After scoring in the 99th percentile on the LSAT, McGoffin has been offering free tutoring services to students studying for the test. He also has had discussions with his advisor about how to establish a more robust prelaw advisory program at MSU Denver.

McGoffin has been enrolled as a full-time student while maintaining his job at Donor Alliance. He’s also an active volunteer with Donate Life Colorado and a member of his company’s public-speaking bureau. The tours and informative talks he gives to surgeons, students and the general public are an opportunity to speak about the importance of organ and tissue donation and how it can give others a second chance.

“I hope my story will inspire others to know that no matter how dark times get,” he says, “everyone deserves a second chance.”

14 2020 FALL COMMENCEMENT Joy Melgarejo, President’s Award Winner

Becoming a peer mentor put Joy Melgarejo on a path to success.

Accepting a position as a peer mentor in Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Roadways program put Joy Melgarejo on the path to achieving her dream of earning a degree in psychology.

That dream was planted in the Philippines, where Melgarejo, grew up. When she and her parents immigrated to Colorado, she put it on hold for a 13-year career as a dental assistant.

But her goal will finally be realized in December, when she graduates from MSU Denver as the fall 2020 President’s Award winner.

“Dental assisting was kind to me and provided me with many rewarding experiences,” Melgarejo said. “I always felt that something was missing; it was time to turn over a new leaf.”

When she first enrolled in the University, she worked and went to school part-time. But with the support of her boyfriend and family, she was able to attend school full-time. That’s when she took on a peer-mentor position with Roadways.

“I actually ended up falling in love with (peer mentoring),” Melgarejo said. “It really helped my University experience, too, because I was exposed to resources that I never knew existed. And it drove me to attend more events and be part of a community.”

Melgarejo “has proven to have a strong work ethic and produces work with integrity” while expanding her leadership capabilities, said Camelia Naranjo, her supervisor in the peer-mentoring office.

During her tenure, Melgarejo transitioned through three roles, ultimately landing as the Lead Career Development Peer Mentor. She also helped develop the University’s Classroom to Career Hub “lunch-and- learn” events that have become staples of peer-mentor programming.

On top of her work in the peer-mentoring office, Melgarejo last spring served as a teaching assistant for a psychology course taught by Courtney Rocheleau, Ph.D. The work solidified her goal of turning her psychology degree into a career in academic advising for higher education.

“She is driven to help students overcome obstacles and reach their potential and achieve their educational goals,” Rocheleau said.

Melgarejo also found time to join the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, intern with the Adams County Probation Department and volunteer with the Rocky Mountain Psychology Association and Project Homeless Connect. To top it all off, she even coached boxing, a sport she picked up as a young adult.

Her proudest academic accomplishment, she said, is graduating with magna cum laude distinction and being named the President’s Award winner.

“My mom asked me the other day, ‘Is this something you ever even dreamed of?’ And my answer was, ‘No, it wasn’t,’” she said. “It was never my goal to have all the accolades. And all this is for someone who was just thinking I want to make a change and pursue something that I’ve been passionate about since I was 13 years old, and just to open more doors for me.”

That door opened to a position at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business as the assistant to the chair for the Management Department. Her new goal is to use the job as a springboard to a career as an academic or career-services advisor.

“I just think I have a lot of things to offer,” Melgarejo said. “My experiences are unique as a nontraditional student, and what I’ve done to set myself up for success is something I’d like to share with students.”
