November 2020 November 2020 Page | 54 Page | 3 ADVERTS CHURCH SERVICES

We are holding a said service at Holy Trinity Church, at 9.30am each

Sunday, alternating between Communion and a Service of the Word. Meanwhile, All Saints Church is open every day for private personal prayer. Using both our buildings in this way means we avoid having to engage in a vast amount of cleaning, for which we neither have the effort (volunteers) nor the money (paid cleaner). We have a weekly sheet of thoughts and prayers based on the main Sunday Bible reading – if you’d like to be added to the mailing list, please let us know by email at [email protected] or by phone 07766 444873. For those who cannot or do not wish to attend in person at the present time, we continue to join with Stansted Church for a Zoom service at 9.30am on Sunday mornings – you can find the direct link for that in our weekly email and on our website www.tlcchurch.co.uk. And we are also posting a video on our Facebook page at 11am each Sunday: tlcchurches.

PLEASE NOTE that this information may well change as Government guidance dictates and as the Church Council responds - the latest information will always be on our website: www.tlcchurch.co.uk and Facebook page: tlcchurches.

November 2020 November 2020 Sun 5 Page | 4 Page | 53 FROM THE MINISTERS HEATING & CARPET CLEANING ‘There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under ‘ the heavens,’ according to the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. For Tina and I that means we have reached that stage in life when paid work will be replaced by unpaid voluntary service. Tina retired from teaching at the end of the summer term this year, and I shall be retiring from full-time ministry in January next year. That also means we shall be moving away. We shall be living in Stroud, about 45 minutes away from our daughter and her family in Swindon. Indeed Sam, our eldest grandson, told us that there is a direct train service from Swindon to Stroud and, that as he can read, he’ll know where he and his younger brother need to get off when they come to stay! For both of us, this is feeling like a very strange time to retire, move and get established in a new place, but we feel that it is the right time for us and for the parish here, particularly as the Deanery and Diocese look to how they can provide ministry in a sustainable way in the future, and with other local parishes currently being in vacancy too. Arrangements for pastoral care and ministry are under discussion and the handover of administrative tasks to our Lay Minister, Administrator, Treasurer and Churchwardens has started. In the meantime, please be assured of our prayers. Rob & Tina Burles

Church Annual Meeting We have just held our delayed Church Annual Meeting, at which we looked back over the last 18 months, and looked forward to the next year, thanking God for his grace and one another for encouragement. Alan Parkinson & Stretch Fulcher were re-appointed as Churchwardens Claire Berry & Sue Gowlett were elected to Deanery Synod Natalie Hildyard was re-appointed to the PCC.

November 2020 November 2020 Page | 6 Page | 51 FROM THE WARDENS HEATING & PLUMBING John 14:1 Let not your hearts be troubled, Trust in God, Trust also in Me. I was looking through my diary of 2019 looking for a reference date to complete a report, and I noticed on Sunday October 6th, 2019, I had recorded I had a cold and could not attend church. Exactly a year to almost the day, Sunday 4th October 2020, I started with a cold and could not attend church, how weird is that? But the big difference is, last year it was just a cold. This year, the question is, have I had the dreaded Coronavirus? No! it was not the Coronavirus, it was just a plain simple cold, runny nose, headache, cough, feeling generally yuk. But wait! “Is it possible you could have had the virus, and not known it?”, a friend asked? People are saying, “how fragile our lives have become”? The carpet has been pulled from under our feet. “When will all this end”? “Oh, I wish we could go back to how it used to be”. These are just some of the comments I have heard. Unfortunately we have been propelled into a world of fear, frustration, uncertainty, and change, with increased lockdowns, restrictions of movement, a sentence of isolation for some. Our natural human behaviour of socialising is not allowed, or restricted, to try stop this virus from spreading, as we are told there is no vaccine yet. But even so, if a vaccine is found, will it stop the virus? I do not think so. We have had a vaccine for flu for many years, but it has not eradicated the flu virus. It still attacks most of us each year, some unfortunately with dire consequences. I personally am not afraid. I do not put my faith in man, and I take with a pinch of salt what most politicians or the news media say. I am not saying there is no virus, but just look at the state of the country at the moment. It is not exactly confidence building, is it? But there is HOPE. Jesus Christ is our Blessed Hope.

November 2020 November 2020 Page | 18 Page | 39 SCHOOLS COMMUNITY NEWS NEWS The Year 1 children have settled back into school very well after such a long time away. They have risen to the challenge of having a place to sit in and their own pens and pencils in a pencil case! They have been working very hard as they begin their journey together along the National Curriculum. This term we have been concentrating on the Traditional Tale ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’ and have used drama to enhance their learning of the story. The children have enjoyed beginning to write the story, using super story language. In maths, the children have been counting to 100 and have been using lots of practical resources to help them. In art, the children have been studying a unit called ‘Colour Chaos’. They have learned about primary colours and how to mix them to make secondary colours.

They have also experimented with tints and shades by adding black or which paint to a primary colour. The children have looked at the work or a range of artists such as Mondrian, Delauney and Pollock. As their final project, the children will be making a large collaborative painting based on Kandinsky’s ‘Colour Studies: Squares with Concentric Circles’

November 2020 November 2020 Page | 38 Page | 19 ADVERTS Little Canfield Parish Council Email: [email protected] Clerk: Ian Brown Another busy month for your Little Canfield Parish Councillors who continue to work in the background, trying to resolve as many issues as possible that residents bring to our attention. Despite repeated attempts to secure an explanation, the children's playgrounds within the Priors Green Development remain closed. We have written and phoned Countryside numerous times over the months requesting an update and to seek clarity as to why the playgrounds which are so important to our community remain closed but have yet to receive a satisfactory response...... we will keep pushing. The refuse lorry park which was to be sited at the top of High Cross and which was unanimously rejected by the planning committee is still on our radar and we are actively fighting the appeal that has since been lodged by the land owners. We have been advised by our colleagues within UDC that work is progressing on the new M11/J7A Harlow entrance/exit slip-road with roadworks around large areas of Dunmow starting to appear. This may cause disruption to all of us in the coming months with drivers trying to find alternative routes to get around said works. We have applied for a grant from UDC, plus we will also be contributing funds towards the purchase of picnic furniture to be sited on the Flitch Way, near the little car park along High Cross Lane East that leads to the flitch way. Once installed and once the weather improves I am sure this initiative will prove really popular. In last months Grapevine, it was advised that LCPC was not pushing forward with a parking scheme. A point of note is that nothing is 'off the table' and when we can we will be asking residents again for their opinions/views on this issue. (Continued on page 49)

November 2020 November 2020 Page | 36 Page | 21 ADVERTS SCHOOLS The Christian School Takeley, Brewers End, CM22 6QH Contact: Phone 01279 871182 Mobile 07791 783464 Whatever our personal feelings may be, COVID-19 remains in the forefront of every aspect of our lives. School life has certainly required changes, sometimes at very short notice. Schools receive daily updates from the Department for Education on how to handle COVID-19. A pupil or member of staff with one of three possible symptoms has to isolate, get tested and stay isolated pending a COVID-19 test result. In the season ripe with colds and sniffles this can have a major impact on a school, their staff and their students. So, is it any surprise that more and more families are considering home education? The surge in this choice of education has resulted in the Government announcing that they will be enhancing the way they monitor and inspect those choosing to home educate and families are dropping a second income in order to accommodate this lifestyle change. There is also a surge in demand for tutors where families wish to invest in their children’s future by ensuring they do not slip back during these unsettling times. School sessions being cancelled at short notice have a huge impact on a working family, even if working from home. Although we are an independent school so fees need to be paid, we do offer another alternative. Our Trustees endeavour to keep our fees well below the market average so not out of reach for many families. Small nurturing education bubbles attracts many to us. Others want the Christian ethos education that we provide. Our staff have committed a lot of time and effort into ensuring that a student can join in a lesson remotely if in isolation; likewise, they are able to remotely teach their class in school, if they themselves have to isolate. The transition is now seamless. As at the time of writing we have been blessed with no positive test results, however we are prepared should that change. With the vast majority of our students in school and in good health we have been enjoying time outdoors together as much as possible whilst the weather is still relatively good. We regularly take advantage of our lovely local area to go on walks and engage in nature-based activities. We are also very pleased to have kept our focus on creative subjects and our lower seniors are currently involved in a very topical project designing and sewing their own facemasks. The juniors are enjoying their project on Ancient Egypt and have been busy creating lots of their own replica artifacts. We do have some availability in KS2 and KS3 if this has left you wanting to know more. Our website has lots of information, our social media pages has lots of photographs of our day to day school life. Or call the office on 01279 871182.
