Let Me Be Your Guide: 21St Century Choir Music in Flanders
Let me be your guide: 21st century choir music in Flanders Flanders has a rich tradition of choir music. But what about the 21st century? Meet the composers in this who's who. Alain De Ley Alain De Ley (° 1961) gained his first musical experience as a singer of the Antwerp Cathedral Choir, while he was still behind the school desks in the Sint-Jan Berchmans College in Antwerp. He got a taste for it and a few years later studied flute with Remy De Roeck and piano with Patrick De Hooghe, Freddy Van der Koelen, Hedwig Vanvaerenbergh and Urbain Boodts). In 1979 he continued his studies at the Royal Music Conservatory in Antwerp. Only later did he take private composition lessons with Alain Craens. Alain De Ley prefers to write music for choir and smaller ensembles. As the artistic director of the Flemish Radio Choir, he is familiar with the possibilities and limitations of a singing voice. Since 2003 Alain De Ley is composer in residence for Ensemble Polyfoon that premiered a great number of his compositions and recorded a CD dedicated to his music, conducted by Lieven Deroo He also received various commissions from choirs like Musa Horti and Amarylca, Kalliope and from the Flanders Festival. Alain De Ley’s music is mostly melodic, narrative, descriptive and reflective. Occasionally Alain De Ley combines the classical writing style with pop music. This is how the song Liquid Waltz was created in 2003 for choir, solo voice and pop group, sung by K’s Choice lead singer Sarah Bettens. He also regularly writes music for projects in which various art forms form a whole. -

GATEWAY TO EUROPE Belgium is a federal state in the heart of Europe. Flanders is the northern, Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. The Flemish Community counts more than 6 million inhabitants and is run by a government of its own with a number of specific competences, such as culture, education, media… Brussels, capital of Belgium and of Flanders as well, is home to the European Commission and many international cultural institutions. 5 PREFACE On a map of the world Flanders looks smaller than a postage stamp. But a felici- tous turn of history has made this region into a crossroads of different cultures. This is why Flanders is rich in creative talent and overflowing with cultural activities. Music thrives everywhere, what with every city boasting a diversity of concert halls or other interesting locations for concerts, festivals and many small-scale initiatives. As for contemporary “art music” (also called “new music”), Flanders is active- ly involved in composing and performing contemporary music on an international level. -
Wim Henderickx by Jan Vandenhouwe, for MATRIX (2001)
Wim Henderickx by Jan Vandenhouwe, for MATRIX (2001) Biography Wim Henderickx was born in Lier in 1962. He studied composition at the Antwerp Conservatory under Willem Kersters, earning his first prize for percussion, solfege, harmony, counterpoint, fugue and composition. He also took part several times in the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt. Henderickx was for many years the timpanist for the Beethoven Academie orchestra and the Eugène Ysaye Ensemble. Today he teaches notation, analysis and composition at the Antwerp Conservatory and at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. As a composer he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Youth and Music Prize Flanders in 1995, the International Composition Prize for Contemporary Music in Quebec for his composition Mysterium in 1989 and the tri-annual E-Baie I prize 1997-1999 awarded by the Province of Antwerp. In 2000 his first opera The Triumph of Spirit over Matter was premiered as part of Brussels 2000 European Cultural Capital, in a performance by Muziektheater Transparant. Work review The music of Wim Henderickx finds its inspiration mainly in non-European cultures. His predilection for Eastern thought led early on to a great interest in Indian music. He is also fascinated by African music. His works are by no means a pure imitation of such music, however. Henderickx does not favour the word “multicultural”, seeing as inappropriate any kind of miscellaneous mix of different cultures under the label of “multiculturalism”. He prefers the term “intercultural”: "Every culture must be able to maintain its own identity, so that we can learn from one another in a respectful way." Henderickx thus remains a Westerner who often draws on non-Western sources of inspiration. -
