Aircraft Crashes In and Around Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park Introduction About twenty aircraft crashed in what is now Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park between 1938 and 1958. A number of factors have to be taken into consideration when attempting to explain this unusually high number of accidents. Human error invariably played a part, but bad weather, particularly heavy mist, was usually a contributory cause. Many of the stricken aircraft were travelling to or from Renfrew Airport, and in these cases the proximity of hills up to 1600 feet in height was a critical factor. Obviously the navigational equipment in use during this period was not as sophisticated as it is now. There is also the theory that the mineral deposits in the area affected the relatively primitive navigational equipment of the time. This design was specifically chosen to contrast with the flag of South African flag as the country was under apartheid and symbolises harmony and peace between black and European people. ABSTRACT This thesis examines the British Commonwealth and Allied Naval forces operation on the west coast during the final two and a half years of the Korean War, particularly focused on their co- operation with the anti-Communist guerrillas. The purpose of this study is to present a more realistic picture of the United Nations (UN) naval forces operation in the west, which has been largely neglected, by analysing their activities in relation to the large number of irregular forces. This thesis shows that, even though it was often difficult and frustrating, working with the irregular groups was both strategically and operationally essential to the conduct of the war, and this naval-guerrilla relationship was of major importance during the latter part of the naval campaign. -

S. Department of Agriculture an invitation for representatives of the Forest Products Laboratory to visit England for the purpose of "strengthening the present collaboration between our two countries on researches into the uses of timber in aircraft construction." The Secretar: of Agriculture accepted this invitation. At the same time, similar invitations were extended by the British Air Commission to the U. S. Army Air Forces, the U. S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics, the U. S. Civil Aeronautics Administration, and to the Canadian Forest Products Laboratories. Due to pressure of work and limi- tation of technical personnel, the Army and Navy were unable to accept the invitation. As finally constituted, the participants in the group, hereinafter referred to as the Forest Products Mission, were as follows: United States Carlile P. 136 Squadron Royal Air Force & F/Sgt 'Bob' Cross, DFM
136 Squadron Royal Air Force & F/Sgt ‘Bob’ Cross, DFM. Formed at Kirton -in- Lindsey, Lincolnshire, on 20 th August 1941, and equipped with Hawker Hurricane MkIIs, 136 Squadron can be said to have been a truly ‘Commonwealth’ squadron. The founder members hailed from Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, and even boasted an Argentine Scot! The Squadron can also lay claim to being the only known unit of the British Forces whose name, and ultimately the official Squadron Crest, approved and granted by the Monarch, came about courtesy of a somewhat bawdy song! It was in ‘The Queens Head’ pub, in Kirton village, that the first Squadron C.O., Squadron Leader T.A.F. Elsdon, DFC, broke into song, although perhaps not too tunefully, with a rendition of a slightly risqué ditty, entitled “The Woodpecker’s Hole ”, sang to the tune of “ Dixie ”, which was taken up by at least two of the young pilot’s who also knew the words, and it wasn’t long before this became the ‘Squadron Song’. The legend of ‘The Woodpeckers’ had begun! Becoming operational on 28 th September, conducting patrols over the North Sea, the Squadron was soon on the move, embarking for the Far East on November 9 th . Upon arrival in India, ‘The Woodpeckers’ were quickly redirected to Burma, arriving in early February 1942, during the Japanese invasion! Another move swiftly followed at the end of the month, with the Squadron evacuated to India, reforming operationally, still with Hurricanes, on 31 st March. The main duties were convoy patrols, and the air defence of Calcutta, and some operations actually took place from a main thoroughfare in the city, the Red Road, with take off and landing being between the stone balustrades on either side of the road, with the odd statue or two to take into consideration on the approach! Detachments based at Chittagong also began operating over the Burma front, in mid-December, with the Squadron being based there by the end of the year. -

Two Typhoons had briefed them on the ground that they would work with [an aircraft carrier] before working in the D809 complex. They were advised by the Ground controller to free-call [the Lossiemouth Approach ICF] when ready to manoeuvre in the Moray Bowl. However, when in the vicinity of HMR X- Ray, one aircraft adopted a Swanwick(Mil) squawk and the other maintained 7001 while they were working in the vicinity of D809, mostly at low-level. Between 1020 and 1030Z, Lossiemouth Approach was controlling a rotary on HMR X-Ray at 4000ft, Orkney RPS 1013, under a Traffic Service. The Typhoons were seen to move and operate NE of Lossiemouth by about 15nm at approximately 6000ft before turning to head NE, almost directly at the helicopter. -

The Newsletter of Canadian Naval Aviators and Associates Toronto, Ontario, Canada June 2011 Last year, we reported that the Sheriff had called BOTH of us for jury duty, though we had both been called in recent years. On the first time, Deb had been able to claim immunity because she was still in the forces. In my case, the year passed without my being called. On last New Year’s Eve, we were able to toast our freedom; however, the first mail of the new year brought a summons dated in late December, ordering me to do my duty. The summons came with a set of ‘frequently asked questions’ that covered most of my needs, but there was one point that I needed clarified. A call to the Sheriff’s office reached a clerk who was able to answer the question. Out of the blue, she asked me if I wanted to be relieved from duty. While I discussed the pros and cons, she suddenly told me that she had just removed me from the list as not being qualified. Formidable! Later in the year in a smaller community nearby, a judge called all his prospective jurors together and asked them explain why so many had tried to be relieved of their duty. It seems that many are called and few want to be chosen. Another year has passed, and it has not been a good one for me. A chronic problem has turned into a severe one, though how severe will not be known for some time. After several months of debilitating and confusing symptoms, I have been diagnosed with bladder cancer, which now has spread. -
