Isaiah 44:6-23 Gods made of wood 1. Introduction The book of Isaiah emphasizes God’s greatness. His greatness manifests itself in creation and in how he governs history. But God’s greatness is equally apparent in the comparison between him and the idols. Isaiah 44 openly mocks those who fashion and worship idols. The idols and those who made them are as it were called to defend themselves in court. God challenges them to show their greatness, but the silence is deafening. It looks like idol worship no longer exists, but appearances are deceptive. Even today this chapter of Isaiah poses some very relevant questions. What has Western society accomplished with the gods of their own making? What does the future hold for you if you do not seek your salvation in the living God? 2. General Remarks 1. Idols cannot help With great irony, almost sarcastically, God shows us how ridiculous the idols are and how ridiculous it is to trust in them. This mocking of the idols has to be seen in light of the circumstances God’s people were in. God allows Isaiah to speak about the future of the people of Israel. We do not know exactly at what point in time the people heard these words. It is possible that they were already spoken before the deportation. It is also possible that the people did not hear or read these words until they actually were in exile. For our understanding of these words it does not make much difference. The people of Judah are in grave danger as far as their existence as a nation is concerned. -
Heshbon (Modern Hesbdn) Is Located in Transj Ordan
THE HISTORY OF HESHBON FROM LITERARY SOURCES * WERNER VYHMEISTER River Plate College, Puiggari, Entre Rios, Argentina Heshbon (modern Hesbdn) is located in Transjordan, about 20 miles east of the Jordan where it enters the Dead Sea. The remains of the old city are covered now by two hills, 2,930 and 2,954 feet above sea level respectively. According to the latest available statistics (from 1961), the village of Hesbdn has 718 inhabitants. Heshbon in OT Times Heshbon appears for the first time in the Biblical record as the capital city of Sihon, the Amorite king defeated by Moses. However, the region in which Heshbon was located is mentioned much earlier in the Bible. In Gn 14:5, Chedor- laomer and his confederates appear as smiting successively the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim (i.e., the plain of Kiria- thaim). Kiriathaim has been identified with el-Qerei ydt, about five miles northwest of Dhz'bdn. Ancient Israel's Neighbors Isaiah was God’s prophet who was called to preach, teach, and prophesy to the entire known world, not just to those who lived in his kingdom. He prophesied to Arabia (Isaiah 21:13–17), Assyria (10:12–19), Babylon (13:6– 22; 21:1–10; 47:1–15), Edom (34:1–15), Egypt (19:1–25), Ethiopia (20:1–6), Moab (15:1–16:4), and Philistia (14:28–32). ISAIAH 2:16 And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures. Tarshish, the precise location of which is unknown, was probably a prosperous and bustling Mediterranean seaport. Through Tarshish, Solomon imported luxury items, including gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks (1 Kings 10:22). Perhaps because of the city’s wealth and afuence, the destruction of Tarshish and its ships symbolizes the Lord’s judgment on the proud and arrogant (Psalm 48:7; Isaiah 23:1, 14). ISAIAH 7:18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall hiss for the y that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. The y and the bee often symbolize ghting soldiers (Deuteronomy 1:44; Psalm 118:12). These symbols are well chosen because “the ooding of the Nile brought . swarms of ies,” and “the hill districts of Assyria were well known for their bees” (J. Alec Motyer, The Prophecy of Isaiah: An Introduction and Commentary, 89). In this case, Isaiah prophesies that the Lord will prompt the Assyrian armies, here referred to as “bees,” to come down on Judah. -

In the Bible God judges individuals, and families, and churches, and cities, and even nations… I would assume He also judges businesses, and labor unions, and school systems, and civic groups, and athletic associations - all of life is God’s domain. Starting in Isaiah 13, God launches a series of judgments against the Gentile nations of his day. Making Isaiah’s list are Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Ethiopia, Egypt, Edom, Tyre, and Syria. Tonight we’ll study God’s burden against the nations. ! Isaiah 15 begins, “The burden against Moab…” Three nations bordered Israel to the east - Moab, Edom, and Ammon. Today this area makes up the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan - a pro-Western monarchy with its capitol city of Amman - or Ammon. ! Today, it’s fashionable to research your roots - track down the family tree. Websites like Ancestry.com utilize the power of the Internet to uncover your genealogy. For some folks this is a fun and meaningful pastime. For me, I’ve always been a little leery… I suspect I’m from a long line of horse thieves and swindlers. I’m not sure I want to know my ancestry. This is probably how most Moabites felt regarding their progenitors… ! The Moabites were a people with some definite skeletons in the closest! Their family tree had root rot. Recently, I read of a Michigan woman who gave her baby up for adoption. Sixteen years later she tracked him down on FB… only to get romantically involved. She had sex with her son… Obviously this gal is one sick pup. -

ISAIAH LESSON 1 Isaiah, in My Opinion, Is the Most Spiritual of The
ISAIAH LESSON 1 Isaiah, in my opinion, is the most spiritual of the Old Testament books. The man, Isaiah, was a prophet and preacher at the time he wrote this book. Isaiah was prophet during the reign of 5 kings, most of whom were evil. His wife was a prophetess in her own right. Some believe that the word "prophetess" means wife of a prophet, but that is not correct. A person does not become a prophet, or a prophetess, because they are married to a prophet. The office of prophet, or prophetess, is a call from God. You are not called to preach, because your husband preaches. You may be called to preach, but if you are, the call is from God, not because of who you are related to. History tells us that Manasseh had Isaiah tied to two boards and sawn in two. The following Scripture is believed to be in reference to the horrible fate of Isaiah. Hebrews 11:37 "They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;" Isaiah had great reverence for God. He was a serious, spiritual man. He was known as the prophet of redemption. There were more prophecies of the coming Messiah in Isaiah than any other book, except Psalms. The name, "Isaiah", means Salvation of Jehovah, or Jehovah is Salvation. The book of Isaiah contains 66 chapters divided into 39, and 27 the same way the Old and New Testament is divided. The one thing that tells us beyond a doubt that Isaiah, the prophet, wrote all of it, is his use of the title "Holy One of Israel". -

Village Church of Wheaton Isaiah 2 and 3 September 4, 2005 ISAIAH: Chapters 2 and 3 Wicked Behavior Will Be Punished This past week we have watched on television the absolute destruction of a good portion of a major city. We have seen the anguish of individuals who were going without food and water and standing for hours or days in the hot sun waiting to be transported to a shelter. We have heard the children cry. We have watched the water rescues of people from their roofs. We have seen miles and miles of rubble where homes used to be. And we have heard some reporters use the term to describe the devastation as being of “biblical proportions.” Such a comment indicates that at least some individuals are aware of the parts of Scripture that talk about the coming judgment and what it will do to the earth as we know it. If one really knows the Scripture, devastating and horrible as what we’ve seen this week in Louisiana and Mississippi is, it is still nowhere near what is yet to come. Yet it is good that at least some individuals are thinking about God in all of this aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The governors of both states have requested prayer and prayer meetings are being held around the country. Truly, our nation needs to be reminded of 2 Chronicles 7:14 and pray with all our hearts. But along with that prayer there needs to be a whole-hearted repentance and turning to God. It is very timely that we are looking at the book of Isaiah right now because it has something to say to us regarding such things. -

Bruce Compton 1 INTRODUCTION AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. 15 He will eat curds and honey at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. 16 For before the boy will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken (Isa 7:14–16). 2 In Isaiah 7:1 Ahaz (735–715 B.C.) of the southern kingdom is confronted in 734 B.C. by a combined force of Rezin (750–732 B.C.) from Syria and of Pekah (752–732 B.C.) from the northern kingdom. The two kings had earlier formed a coalition to ward off Assyrian he- gemony. Ahaz apparently had rejected their previous overtures to join them. In response, the two kings sent their combined forces against Jerusalem in an effort to depose Ahaz, replace him with a king of their choosing, and force the southern kingdom into joining their cause (v. 6). 3 The motive behind this Syro-Ephraimite incursion, it may be as- sumed, was two-fold. By having the southern kingdom as part of the coalition, the coalition’s chances against the formidable Assyrian forces would be enhanced. At the same time, a buffer would be provided for the coalition’s southern flank in case Egypt decided to take advantage of the political instability in the region. -

Date: 27 November 2008 Copyright © 2008 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved II ABSTRACT As the title indicates, our study is focused on a theological interpretation of the city in Isaiah 24-27 from the point of view of God’s judgment and salvation. The main reason for the study is that in Isaiah 24-27, the city plays a very significant role. The research therefore employs the socio-rhetorical approach which is a method that explores a multi-dimensional way of dealing with the text. Applying Robbins’ (1966a & b) textural analysis to the text of Isaiah 24-27, the inner and inter textures are examined in order to demonstrate the narrator’s rhetorical strategy. Through the prophetic genre of judgement and salvation, the narrator challenges the audience/reader to change their minds and attitudes, especially about the city. The challenge is that the fortified city alone would never provide safety and peace but rather bring God’s judgment. In contrast, God alone provides salvation and protection through God’s reign on Mount Zion/Jerusalem.
