From the vibrant port town of Trapani you can take a boat across to Sicily’s captivating Egadi islands or a cable car which whisks you up into the medieval walled town of Erice where you can almost feel that you have been transported to Tuscany.

    ALESSIO DI GIOVANNI Alessio Di Giovanni nacque a Cianciana, in provincia di Agrigento, il 14 ottobre 1872. Il padre, Gaetano, accomunò alla professione di notaio l'attività di attento studioso di storia locale e del folklore isolano (fu anche prezioso collaboratlore di Ciuseppe Pitrè) e lasció apprezzate opere. Una tale atmosfera influì non poco nella formazione del giovane Alessio, che esordì nel 1896 con la silloge Maju sicilianu, cui seguirono, nel 19OO, Lu fattu di Bbissana e Fatuzzi razziusi e quindi: A lu passu di Giurgenti, 1902; Nella Valplatani, 1904; Cristu, 1905; Lu puvireddu amurusu, 1907; Nni la dispanza di la surfara, 1910; La campana di Muntisantu, 1917; Il poema di padre Luca, 1935. Raccolse parte della sua opera in Voci del feudo, 1938. Per i1 teatro dialettale siciliano scrisse Scunciuru, 19O8); Gabrieli lu carusu, 1910; Mora mora, pubblicato col titolo L'ul- timi siciliani nei vol. Teatro siciliano, 1932, che comprende anche le due precedenti opere teatrali. Le sue opere di narrativa dialettale sono: La morti di lu Patriarca, 192O; La racina di Sant'Antoni, 1939 e, postumo, Lu saracinu. Fu docente di lettere nell'Istituto Tecnico “Scinà” a Palermo, dove trascorse gran parte della sua esistenza; di temperamento riservato, evitò i salotti mondani e letterari, preferendo lalibreria Reber ai Quattro Canti e i ritiri nei conventi francescani. Continua senza sosta la protesta dei "sindaci ribelli", così denominati per non aver consegnato gli impianti idrici dei loro comuni alla gestione di Girgenti acque. A seguito di una nota fatta pervenire agli stessi dall'Ato idrico di Agrigento, i sindaci di diciassette comuni dell'agrigentino, Alessandria della Rocca, Aragona, Bivona, Burgio, Camastra, Cammarata, Cianciana, Joppolo Giancaxio, Menfi, Palma Montechiaro, San Biagio Platani, Santa Elisabetta, Santa Margherita Belice, Sant'Angelo Muxaro, Santo Stefano Quisquina, si sono riuniti il tre novembre scorso nell'aula consiliare di Burgio per far fronte a questa nuova emergenza. L'Assemblea, per iniziativa del sindaco della cittadina burgitana Vito Ferrantelli, ha preso in esame le pungenti questioni che riguardano la pressante vicenda della riconsegna delle reti idriche a Girgenti acque. Già da tempo è in atto uno scontro durissimo fra la maggioranza dei sindaci e la quasi totalità delle popolazioni contro la presidenza dell'Ato idrico, l'Agenzia regionale per l'acqua e i rifiuti e la società Girgenti acque, alla quale è stata aggiudicata nel 2006, la gestione trentennale dei servizi idrici dell'intera provincia. L'aggiudicazione fu a suo tempo contestata e impugnata dai sindaci con ricorso tuttora pendente presso il Cga di Palermo. Risultato della riunione tenutasi a Burgio è stato un documento, sottoscritto e firmato da tutti i sindaci presenti, che considera nulla e illegittima la richiesta trasmessa dal Consorzio di Ambito di Agrigento del servizio idrico e formulata dal Commissario straordinario liquidatore che intende applicare, a rigor di legge, il decreto "Sblocca Italia" che dispone la revoca immediata dei finanziamenti per opere non immediatamente cantierabili.
