We can only look at History through papers, online and Apps, But what if we brought History back to life, through singing, dancing & facts. We can visit the court of Henry VIII, the king obsessed with power Those poor six wives, of which only one survived, and two beheaded at the tower. The Great Fire of London of 1666, as Samuel Pepys likes to tell The smallest spark that lit up the dark that made London as ‘hot as hell’. And what about Queen Elizabeth I, whose teeth have never been forgotten. Green and black, with toxic gaps and her breath was oh so rotten. Space Chase - 2019 Business Opportunity with Summer Reading Families North London Challenge Magazine The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children’s reading can decline during the summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books or encouragement to read for pleasure. This year the challenge will focus on the theme ‘Space Chase’—an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children are challenged to read at least six library books over the school holidays and collect rewards, such as stickers, on their way to receiving their challenge certificate and medal. The Jargon of Secondary Education If you have a child in primary school you are probably familiar with the terms, ‘SATs’ and ‘progress’ but as you start considering the next steps in education there are a few new terms you may come across. We asked Broomfield Secondary School to explain some of these terms. The Department for Education has a new examinations measure called ‘Progress 8’. This is considered the most accurate measure of a school’s progress to date. This new measure enables parents to make accurate judgments on how a school is doing. How does Progress 8 do this? • Progress 8 does this by showing the progress of a school’s pupils with the progress of pupils in all schools nationally. • Progress 8 does this by looking at how the pupils have done in their five years at secondary school. It compares the pupils’ Year 11 GCSEs with their Year 6 SATs results. In other words, it shows the work that has taken place in the secondary school. • Progress 8 does this by looking at the pupils’ range of GCSE subjects. A good education requires that a good number of subjects is studied. • Progress 8 looks at 8 GCSE subjects, including English, mathematics and science. What is Broomfield School’s Progress 8 score? Since the introduction of the Progress 8 measure, Broomfield has consistently been placed at national average or above national average. The Progress 8 measure of Broomfield School’s GCSEs for summer 2018 is -0.07 (i.e. at the national average), in the top 68% of schools nationally. EBacc The Department for Education recommends that pupils study the core subjects of English language, English literature, Maths, Science, History or Geography and a language at GCSE. These subjects make up the English Baccalaureate (EBacc). Studying the EBacc at GCSE gives pupils access to a full range of employment options when they leave secondary school and the broad knowledge that employers are looking for. EBacc is not a test or qualification; it is a measure used to provide information about a particular range of qualifications. How many pupils at Broomfield enter the Ebacc? At Broomfield a broad and balanced curriculum is seen as vitally important for all pupils and in 2018 86% of GCSE pupils were entered for the Ebacc. Where can I find this information? To compare Broomfield School, or another school, with schools locally and nationally go to: www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk

Schools that Ban Mobile Phones Improve Results Should children be allowed to take mobile phones to school? Opinion is divided. Some advocate a complete ban because of the potential for distraction, while others promote the use of phones as a teaching tool in the classroom. Schools in England and Scotland have complete autonomy regarding their mobile phone policy, which has resulted in large differences in the timing of the introduction of bans. Schools that ban pupils from carrying mobile phones show a sustained improvement in exam results, with the biggest advances coming from struggling students, according to research published by the London School of Economics. The large-scale study found schools in Birmingham, London, Leicester and Manchester that banned mobiles enjoyed a boost in the proportion of pupils getting five good passes at GCSE, compared with schools that allowed pupils to keep their phones, even if switched off. Keeping your Family Safe and Healthy this Summer By Dr Tom York As the weather gets warmer, you and your family are likely to be spending more time outside. Outdoor activities can be a lot of fun but it’s important that you’re prepared and take certain precautions to keep your family safe. Here are my tips for staying safe this summer. Be Careful around Open Waters Water starts to appear more and more inviting as the weather gets warmer. Whether you take your family kayaking on a lake, for a dip in the sea or simply for a riverside walk, the dangers of open water should not be overlooked. In 2017 there were 255 deaths from accidental drowning, and almost half of these were from people falling in the water unintentionally. The best way to prevent this is to never leave your children unsupervised when in and around water, teach them about the dangers of water and start taking them to swimming lessons from a young age. Always ensure they wear buoyancy aids if necessary. Watch Out for Open Windows Every year there children die or are seriously injured from falling out of open windows. If you open a window to keep the house cool, remember to consider if there’s any chance at all your child might be able climb up to the windowsill and fall out. Children can be surprisingly ingenious when it comes to exploring and you may not consider that they’d be able to effectively re-arrange the furniture until it’s too late. If in doubt, install a window guard but be aware that this isn’t a substitute for close supervision as children have been known to climb over these as well. Set Up a Safe Barbeque Area It won’t be long before the aromas of flame grilled food begin to fill the air in neighbourhoods up and down the country. Barbecues are a great way to enjoy the brighter evenings but pose a risk to young children who decide they wish to play with the new contraption in the corner of the garden. Explain to your children the dangers of going close to the barbecue and that the person doing the cooking needs to have plenty of space to cook safely. Take extra care to keep children away from the barbecue - you could even arrange for another adult to keep them distracted with some garden games. Prepare for British Weather Going on a long family walk can be a great way to enjoy the warm weather but ensuring you’re well-prepared can make the difference between having fond memories and an afternoon you’d prefer to forget. Plan your route, take a map rather than relying on a phone, and take your phone too in case you need to call someone in an emergency. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks and make sure everyone has appropriate clothing and footwear. Consider taking waterproofs, a towel and even a survival blanket. We all know how changeable the British weather can be and children are especially susceptible to hypothermia should they be caught in an unexpected downpour or accidentally slip into water. Beware of Biting Insects With warm weather come a multitude of biting/stinging insects. Thankfully there’s nothing too dangerous in the UK but it still pays to be prepared. Insect repellent is a good first line of defence but antihistamines and anti-itch cream are also useful. Piriton is fast acting and is safe to use in children. Eurax cream or its steroid-containing alternative Eurax Hc is good for reducing the itchiness and swelling following a sting. Bee stings are best removed by scraping them off with a finger nail or the edge of a credit card. Pinching the stinger to try and remove it causes more venom to be released so this should be avoided. Both wasp and bee stings should be washed with soap and water and then a cold pack should be applied to the skin. Watch out for any signs of allergy such as a rash, facial swelling or difficulty breathing, especially in children who may not have been stung before. Childhood Constipation Dr Daniel Crespi, has been a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist at the Centre for Paediatric Gastroenterology at the Royal Free Hospital since 2011 and sees patients of all ages, from newborn to the older teen. He has a variety of clinical interests including gastrointestinal motility conditions such as constipation and reflux, and is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN) GI motility working group. Dr Crespi helped set up a successful nurse led constipation clinic across the Royal Free group. “One of the most common issues I see at all ages is constipation”, explains Dr Crespi. “A frequently quoted figure is that up to 25% of visits to a paediatric gastroenterologist are about constipation. Just recently there have been studies to show that doctors and patients don’t always refer to the same symptoms when dealing with constipation. With a thorough history I am able to clarify the situation with you and your child. A physical examination also helps to rule out other significant but rare causes. In the vast majority of children, there is no underlying anatomical or other cause for constipation. Only in some situations are investigations necessary.” “Once it is clear that constipation is the main issue, the treatment plan is multi-faceted. It consists of a mixture of education about bowel function and good toileting routines, advice regarding a Dr Daniel Crespi balanced healthy diet with adequate fluid and fibre intake and the use of laxatives. More mild cases will settle sooner and other more moderate to severe cases may need a more intense approach, sometimes including what I call a bowel clear-out.” “There are also plenty of excellent resources that I can recommend to families to help with the situation, alongside the treatment plan from clinic. These include an excellent book called the Ins and Outs of poop.” Dr Crespi is available for outpatient consultations at the Royal Free London – Private Patients Unit located in Hampstead. The Private Patients Unit at the Royal Free Hospital is part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Located in the heart of Hampstead Heath, the Royal Free London Private Patients Unit combines the convenience, comfort and personalised attention of a private hospital with the very best state-of-the-art services, technology and professional excellence you would expect from a top London teaching hospital.
