Tom W. Nichols PREFACE This is the story of a man, of his colleagues and co-workers, and of an era in the history of education in Texas. The core of this story is the biography of Cecil Eugene Evans, but it was impossible to present the life of this man with a true and accurate perspective apart from the whole stage, the cast of actors, and the drama in which he so effectively played his part. President Evans smoothed the path for his biographer in several ways, the greatest single feature being the little Redbook into which he wrote the minute details of the happenings of his daily life, his thoughts, and his philosophy. Moreover, he kept in well-organized files his "official" correspondence which con­ tained all the ingredients with which to create a history of the epoch in which he played such a leading role. I am indebted to many persons for help, encouragement, and sympathy, a few of whom are listed herewith. To the late President John G. Flowers, I am grateful for his generosity in making available records of his office and for his helpful suggestions in the writing of the chapter on the Laboratory School. At the head of the school was Thomas G. Harris, a serious, dogmatic, and zealous man, who had been notified in September that he would be replaced at the close of the school year. Harris had held office since the opening of the school in 1903. During the campaign for governor of Texas in 1910, Harris, a very active member of the Anti-Saloon League,l had vigorously opposed 0. B. Colquitt the "wet" candidate. To Harris, Colquitt represented two of the most undesirable qualities a politiciain could possess at that time: first, he was an anti-pro- hibitionist or a "wet"; and, second, in Harris' opinion, he was not a friend to the public schools of Texas. As a state senator fifteen years previously, Colquitt had voted against a school tax proposal; and Harris, who was then editor of the Texas School Journal, severely criticized Colquitt editorially for his stand. John Marvin Smith, who interviewed T. G. Harris in 1930, relates the following: The history of the controversy between them is some- what as follows: While Mr. Harris was living in Dallas [where he was Superintendent of the Dallas City Schools, 1891-1893] he assumed the editorship of the Texas School Journal, and when he moved to Houston and later to Austin, [at both places as Superintendent of City Schools] he moved the magazine with him. This magazine was an outstanding school publication and made

Reddit has developed into a significant platform for political discussion among Mil- lennials. In this exploratory study, we examine subscription trends on three political sub-forums on Reddit during the 2016 US presidential elections: /The Donald, /SandersForPresident, and /HillaryClinton. As a theoretical framework, we draw from work on online communities' group identity and cohesion. Concretely, we investigate how subscription dynamics relate to positive, negative and neutral news events occurring during the election cycle. We classify news events using a sentiment analysis of event-related news headlines. We observe that users who supported Sanders displayed no consolidation of support for Clinton after she won the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Secondly, we show that negative news events affected Sanders and Clintons subscrip- tion trends negatively, while showing no effect for Donald Trump. This gives empirical credence to Trump's controversial claim that he could "stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and not lose any voters". We offer a number of explanations for the observed phenomena: the nature of the content of the three subreddits, their cultural dynamics, and changing dynamics of parti- sanship. We posit that the 'death of expertise' expresses itself on Reddit as a switch in persuasion tactics from a policy-based to an emotions-based approach, and that group members' agreement on policy proved a weak marker for online communities' group identity and cohesion.

Neal first invaded the masculine sanctity of the Texas Senate in January, 1927, she had already amAssed a series of honors and "fIrsts" in public life which would have been sufficient to secure for her a place of prominence in the history of East Texas. Born near Gayton in Panola County in 1875, she was the daughter of William Lafayette Neal and Martha Ann Gholston Neal both of whom came to Texas from Georgia. The desire of her paJ;cnts to provide their children with good educational opportunities prompted a move from the country home near Clayton to the county seat town of Carthage in 1884. 1 Miss Neal's first contact with high political officials came about 1885 or 1886 when Governor John Ireland came to Carthage for a speaking engagement.

    Lillian Gish Lived: October 14, 1893 - February 27, 1993 Worked as: director, film actress, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Mark Garrett Cooper In 1920, Lillian Gish both delivered a landmark performance in D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East and directed her sister Dorothy in Remodelling Her Husband. This was her sole director credit in a career as a screen actor that began with An Unseen Enemy in 1912 and ended with The Whales of August in 1987. Personal correspondence examined by biographer Charles Affron shows that Gish lobbied Griffith for the opportunity to direct and approached the task with enthusiasm. In 1920, in Motion Picture Magazine, however, Gish offered the following assessment of her experience: “There are people born to rule and there are people born to be subservient. I am of the latter order. I just love to be subservient, to be told what to do” (102). One might imagine that she discovered a merely personal kink. In a Photoplay interview that same year, however, she extended her opinion to encompass all women and in doing so slighted Lois Weber, one of Hollywood’s most productive directors. “I am not strong enough” to direct, Gish told Photoplay, “I doubt if any woman is. I understand now why Lois Weber was always ill after a picture” (29). What should historical criticism do with such evidence? By far the most common approach has been to argue that Gish did not really mean what the press quotes her as saying. Alley Acker, for instance, urges us not to be fooled by Gish’s “Victorian modesty” and goes on to provide evidence of her authority on the set (62).

Doctor of Philosophy (History), May 2011, 361 pp., references, 150 titles. Pat M. Neff was a product of his political place and time. Born in Texas in 1871, during Reconstruction, he matured and prospered while his native state did the same as it transitioned from Old South to New South. Neff spent most of his life in Waco, a town that combined New South Progressivism with religious conservatism. This duality was reflected in Neff’s own personality. On moral or religious issues, he was conservative. On economic and social issues, he was Progressive. He thus was a typical Southern Progressive who de-emphasized social and political change in favor of economic development. For instance, as governor from 1921 to 1925, his work to develop and conserve Texas’ water resources brought urbanization and industrialization that made the New South a reality in the state. Neff was a devout Baptist which influenced his politics and philosophy. He was president of Baylor University, a Baptist institution, for fifteen years after leaving the governor s office and he led the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in the 1940s.
