Music Our totally awesome music subbies and contributors have been working hard over the semester break to bring you the latest and greatest in music. We’ve got the goss on Splendour, reviews and interviews. So read on tune- loving friends, read on... Sparkadia You have probably heard of Sparkadia. A couple of months ago their debut album Postcards was featured on Triple J. They also recently completed a run of national dates stopping off in Adelaide to play a show with Perth’s the Dirty Secrets at Jive. At the moment they are probably still overseas having just played Glastonbury and T in the Park not to mention several other high profile festivals. I asked Alex, vocalist/guitarist, and Dave, drummer, how they felt about their recent run of good fortune. “It’s pretty sweet”, Dave confides. Of course it wasn’t always like this. “It’s been a real long hard slog and the combination of ‘a lot of luck and a lot of hard work’,” Alex tells me. The guys then explain how they spent nineteen hours in a tour van with The Cops to get to a show in Sydney, having just played in Adelaide. Inevitably, I got onto the subject of Sparkadia’s early days. Alex and Dave were school mates who only bonded over a love of Metallica and ‘Maiden. I gasped in the realisation that I had finally discovered One of the groups defining moments occurred at Splendour in the some like minded heavy metal fans. Actually, Gouldner might more accurately describe Goffman as posing indi- viduals as holding ‘sign-value,’ referring here to the concept ﬁrst raised by Baudrillard in For a Critique of the Political Economy of the Sign and further developed in The Mirror of Production. 2. Interestingly, Habermas’ critique of Goffman is remarkably similar to Goffman’s similar treatment of George Herbert Mead. 3. This is echoed in the analysis of the German philosopher Ernst Tugendhat (who admittedly is dealing with the Meadian rather than the Goffmanian use of ‘role’), who describes role positions as ‘meaning offers,’ stressing the semiotic/hermeneutic dimensions of role-play (p. 243). 4. This example is of special interest given the importance that childhood play is given in the formation of the self within the pragmatist tradition. Mead repeatedly invokes play as an initial exploration of otherness by the devel- oping social self and, despite Goffman’s aforementioned critique of Mead, he was clearly inﬂuenced by the pragmatist tradition (especially as processed through Blumer and Cooley). That role distance is a part of these early play experiences is certainly provocative in this light, suggesting the doubleness of role-play would also be constitutive of selfhood. 5. Fredric Jameson, in a 1974 review of Frame Analysis for Theory and Society, also cites ‘key’ as the most interesting of Goffman’s conceptual contribu- tions in the book; while my understanding of the key is rather different from Jameson’s, I want to acknowledge a shared appreciation here.

Il primo disco pubblicato con i Pussy Galore (nome ispirato a uno dei perso- naggi della saga di 007, Goldfinger) risale al 1985, Feel good about your body, ed è un incrocio fra garage e punk, fra Cramps e Howiln’ Wolf. La maggior parte della sua fama è tuttavia dovuta alla Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (poi solamente detta Blues Explosion) che rimane uno dei punti più alti delle espe- rienze musicali americane degli ultimi anni, con il suo blues-noise ruvido, dissacrante (nei confronti della tradizione), e l'energia mozzafiato degli show dal vivo che fecero conoscere la band in tutti i continenti. Con la Blues Explosion, Jon introduce anche il terhemin nel proprio arma- mentario, oltre alle chitarre e alla propria, sempre più potente, grintosa, e profonda voce.
