They are hardworking and dedicated people who wake up every morning just to play music. Maybe that’s whyPowerSolonever stop touring but always have a new gig planned somewhere in the world. Watch video on YouTube here Jon Spencer (JSBX/Boss Hog/Pussy Galore) recently was quoted describing his experiences with the brotherly duo's sound: "Seeing the Railthin Brothers is like getting a pure shot of penicillin. Kim Kix and Atomic Child shed the safety net of their supergroup Powersolo to take on modern music with alarming ferocity and cunning killer instincts. This is Donkey Punk at it's most raw and intense!" PowerSolo may be a power duo, but in this case, the prog-metal acrobatics of Rush are replaced with something they call "donkey punk." Two tremolo- loving chicken-scratch rail-thin guitarists, Kim Kix and the Atomic Child. It would've been well enough had Powersolo hailed from the Land of NASCAR, but the fact that this exercise in B-movie punk-a-billy is coming from Aarhus, Denmark, adds plenty of delicious cognitive dissonance. The Dirty Water Club started in October 1996 in the Tufnell Park neighbourhood of north London, at a venue called The Boston. The club's name is derived from The Standells' 1966 hit 'Dirty Water' which glorifies the US city of Boston, Massachusetts. Music Our totally awesome music subbies and contributors have been working hard over the semester break to bring you the latest and greatest in music. We’ve got the goss on Splendour, reviews and interviews. So read on tune- loving friends, read on... Sparkadia You have probably heard of Sparkadia. A couple of months ago their debut album Postcards was featured on Triple J. They also recently completed a run of national dates stopping off in Adelaide to play a show with Perth’s the Dirty Secrets at Jive. At the moment they are probably still overseas having just played Glastonbury and T in the Park not to mention several other high profile festivals. I asked Alex, vocalist/guitarist, and Dave, drummer, how they felt about their recent run of good fortune. “It’s pretty sweet”, Dave confides. Of course it wasn’t always like this. “It’s been a real long hard slog and the combination of ‘a lot of luck and a lot of hard work’,” Alex tells me. The guys then explain how they spent nineteen hours in a tour van with The Cops to get to a show in Sydney, having just played in Adelaide. Inevitably, I got onto the subject of Sparkadia’s early days. Alex and Dave were school mates who only bonded over a love of Metallica and ‘Maiden. Actually, Gouldner might more accurately describe Goffman as posing indi- viduals as holding ‘sign-value,’ referring here to the concept ﬁrst raised by Baudrillard in For a Critique of the Political Economy of the Sign and further developed in The Mirror of Production. 2. Interestingly, Habermas’ critique of Goffman is remarkably similar to Goffman’s similar treatment of George Herbert Mead. 3. This is echoed in the analysis of the German philosopher Ernst Tugendhat (who admittedly is dealing with the Meadian rather than the Goffmanian use of ‘role’), who describes role positions as ‘meaning offers,’ stressing the semiotic/hermeneutic dimensions of role-play (p. 243). 4. This example is of special interest given the importance that childhood play is given in the formation of the self within the pragmatist tradition. Mead repeatedly invokes play as an initial exploration of otherness by the devel- oping social self and, despite Goffman’s aforementioned critique of Mead, he was clearly inﬂuenced by the pragmatist tradition (especially as processed through Blumer and Cooley). That role distance is a part of these early play experiences is certainly provocative in this light, suggesting the doubleness of role-play would also be constitutive of selfhood. 5. Fredric Jameson, in a 1974 review of Frame Analysis for Theory and Society, also cites ‘key’ as the most interesting of Goffman’s conceptual contribu- tions in the book; while my understanding of the key is rather different from Jameson’s, I want to acknowledge a shared appreciation here.
